- See us in the Mags this Month - BR in Dwell and Concrete Homes; an Essential Cold Weather Tip; New Distributors and New Classes for the New Year. |
| Startin Spartan, the cover article in the new Dec|Jan issue of Dwell highlights Jay Atherton and Cy Keener, two young designers who have built a minimalist home in Phoenix. |

Anticipating that casting a single concrete countertop would be difficult and unwieldy, the pair poured a rough rectangular sheet of concrete on their living-room floor. When it set, they carved it up into chunks with a diamond blade skill saw and fit the pieces in around their appliances." We are happy to note that they then referred readers to www.buddyrhodes.com and happier still to be a part of their concrete vision. You can check out their handmade home online, where another 20+ pictures of the concrete house are posted. |
Cold Weather Casting Tip It's time to remind you all to start using warmer water, as casting with cold water will slow down the set time of your concrete. In the summer, we tell hot-weather casters to put ice in their water! But let's not get ahead of ourselves - in winter, in addition to warming your water, bring your BR bags out of the freezing cold overnight so the Mix material is all ready to cozy up to your water. Keep your sealers and additives, anything liquid, unfrozen. Their chemistry can be adversely affected by icy temps. The bags themselves can live in the cold, as long as they don't get wet.

Buddy Rhodes in Concrete Homes Magazine Along with the Cover of Concrete Homes November 2010 issue, Buddy Rhodes is featured in two articles within the issue devoted to Beautiful...Green...and Built to Last. Craftsman Countertops is a story about how well concrete countertops work in a meticulously researched Arts & Crafts style home in San Francisco.
Finished concrete need not be relegated to minimalist homes as showcased in Dwell (see above). High-end concrete was born as a design element even before architects Frank Lloyd Wright, Gustav Stickley and Charles and Henry Greene championed them in their early 20th century designs. Make sure you and your customers keep minds wide open when rooting for the use of finished concrete in projects of any era.
In the same issue, the article Plane and Fancy focuses on leading figures of the concrete countertop world who will be in attendance at the Concrete Decor Show in Nashville, March-15-18, 2011.
Buddy expresses his enthusiasm for the show as " ...the first show that's really brought us all together so we can talk amongst ourselves, go to seminars, exchange ideas..." Buddy's trainers will lead a class there, as well as the rest of the decorative concrete pantheon, including Brandon Gore.
