Buddy Rhodes & Friends at the Concrete Decor Show
Buddy Rhodes and crew made their way to Phoenix March 15-19 for a gathering of the tribes at The Decorative Concrete Show. Buddy joined a standing-room-only forum called Creative Possibilities of Decorative Concrete at the beginning of the week, and on Thursday evening he was inducted into the first Concrete Décor Hall of Fame! Buddy Rhodes Artisans Beto Esquivel and Nick Relampagos were teaching the latest techniques - the show was aptly titled Spring Training. Beto and our Las Vegas BR associate Paulo Petit involved students en espanol under the tents outside, and Nick demonstrated the GFRC spray method inside using his new "Sausalito" Fiberglass Lounge Chair Mold, and the "fresh from the oven" new BR Bone White Spray Coat Mix. Both of these products are now available from our San Francisco office or by order from your Buddy Rhodes distributor.Buddy and Nick with the just completed lounge chair at the Decorative Concrete Show Booth. |

GFRC Recipe and Tips
Once again it was clear at the show: the glass-fiber-reinforced-concrete train is leaving the station - hop on board! Many of our booth attendees asked for the recipe and tips for using the BR Bone White Spray Mix for the face coat, together with the back-up coat of BR Countertop Mix. Now available in 50 lb. bags, the Spray Coat Mix is basically the Buddy Rhodes Countertop Mix formula, blended at the factory without the larger aggregate. Although you can still easily enough accomplish your GFRC spraying goals by sifting our regular mix and adding BR GFRC additives, we have bagged this time saver, by popular demand, as a simple first step for our spraying customers. Don't forget that you can also create stronger thinner pieces, including pressed technique projects, using glass fibers without spraying. The free standing vanity unit (pictured below at the front corner of our Show booth) demonstrates that fact; but for those of you seeking that lounge chair kind of form and thinness, here's the Spray Coat recipe:
Buddy Rhodes Sprayable Face-Coat Ingredients: 1.5 qt Water 1 qt Buddy Rhodes Curing Polymer 1 oz Buddy Rhodes Water Reducer 25 lbs Buddy Rhodes Bone White Spray Coat Mix Pigment
Mixing order: Mix the water, curing polymer, pigment and water reducer in a 5 gal. bucket.
Incorporate the Buddy Rhodes Spray Coat mix to the liquids while mixing.
If the mix is a bit too dry, add another half ounce of water reducer and re-mix.
Allow the mix to flash set for about 4-5 minutes and re-mixed before spraying. The mix should be able to easily pour out of a 1qt. cup into your spray hopper.
Helpful tips: The face coat mix should be liquid enough to create a solid liquid stream coming out of your cup. If it won't flow through your hopper, it's too thick. Your spray should come out of the gun like wet spatter. Clear your corners of debris before you spray your mix into it. Brush your corners and edges to consolidate your mix.
Ingredients for Vertical Back Coat 1 Bag Buddy Rhodes Concrete Counter Mix 1.5 qt Buddy Rhodes Polymer Curing Additive 4 qt Water 1 lb BR Alkali Resistant Glass Fiber
Mix water, curing polymer and pigment in 25gal bucket. Start pouring in 1 70 lb bag of Buddy Rhodes Concrete Mix. Mix to the consistency of wet oatmeal, add fibers slowly and reduce mixer rpm. Mix should be soft and be able to work through your fingers when pressed.
Ingredients for Self-Consolidating Back Coat 1 Bag Buddy Rhodes Mix 1.5 qt Buddy Rhodes Curing Polymer 4 qt Water 3 oz Water Reducer 1 lb BR Alkali Resistant Glass Fiber
Mix water, curing polymer, pigment, and water reducer in 25 gal. bucket. Start pouring in 1 70 lb bag of Buddy Rhodes Concrete Mix. Mix to the consistency of a milkshake , reduce mixer rpm, add fibers slowly. Mix should be flowable and have no slump.
This Vanity from Its Concrete uses the BR pressed technique and 2 bags Buddy Rhodes Concrete Countertop Mix with added BR Glass Fibers, BR ash color, and sanded by hand with BR diamond pads. It is not sprayed first, rather it is packed from inside the mold. Voids are left open for texture on the outer side surface, with the top surface pasted and polished with no open voids.
