Our Neighborhoods

Greetings!

Portlanders are encouraged to celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, by hosting a party, gathering, or get-together to connect or reconnect with neighbors.

National Night Out has promoted crime and drug prevention in neighborhoods the first Tuesday in August for the last 29 years. When neighbors gather and know one another it sends a message to criminals that the neighborhood is strong, organized and people care what happens.

Knowing who lives around you and being in tuned with your neighborhood is an important step in safety and crime prevention. Who can you turn to if a drug house is noticed on a street? If snow has shut down the city? Or if there is an emergency in your home? In these situations it is important that people can rely on their neighbors. Learn more about National Night Out here.

Thursday, July 19th:  Mapping the Experience of Cycling
Many cyclists choose to travel by bike because it's fun. However, existing bike maps don't talk about fun - they're dull, practical tools.  Google Maps, for example, shows distance and where to turn; it's hard to learn which roads have heavy exhaust fumes, where the funky houses are, or other rich details about the trip.   A trip planner that describes experience could encourage people to cycle more and could help cyclists enjoy their ride more.

We know from donor research and practical experience that donors want to hear what you did with their first gift before they are likely to give you a second one. That means you need to figure out ways to share your results and success stories with donors throughout the year, so you can ask for that additional support.

Livability & Sustainability

sharrowEach summer, the City of Portland tracks the number of cyclists travelling across the city. We station volunteers at over 200 locations throughout Portland to watch and count bike traffic (most intersections are well-traveled bike routes), as well as cyclist gender and helmet use. As you can imagine, we get a lot of great data out of the counts, and this helps to improve the case for better infrastructure in these neighborhoods.

Though more than half of the locations are already covered, we are still looking for more volunteers to count as many locations as possible. We thought it would be a great idea to reach out to neighborhood associations and district coalitions to help recruit interested residents in your areas - it's a great way to get involved directly in the neighborhood.

You can check out the information for the 2012 Bike Count here: (including a map of all the count locations). Volunteer shifts are flexible, and we still have over three months to complete the project.

City Council votes to increase connections to healthful, local, affordable food

The Urban Food Zoning Code Update project, led by the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) in partnership with the Oregon Public Health Institute (OPHI) and members of the community, developed a new set of regulations to support growing, buying and selling food at a scale that is appropriate to residential neighborhoods and helps build community.

The new regulations address community gardens, farmers markets and market gardens, as well as alternative food distribution methods such as community sponsored agriculture (CSA) and food buying clubs. Learn more here!
