Neighborhood election season is here! Most neighborhoods in the SE Uplift Coalition area are holding elections in May and they need you! Neighborhood associations are the officially recognized voice of Portland's 95 neighborhoods. Participation is voluntary and open to all residents who live, own property or a business within a neighborhood's boundaries. Neighborhood associations actively work to reflect the issues and needs of its membership. Each association is self-governed by citizen-written bylaws which state the boundaries and criteria for membership and outline processes and procedures for functions such as voting, considering proposals and handling grievances. The City of Portland has developed a minimum set of standards which neighborhood associations must follow in order to be recognized by Portland's Office of Neighborhood Involvement.

Community News

SE Uplift is delighted and proud to host "We are Portland!"

"We are Portland" is a youth-run mobile portrait studio that builds community through the arts. Our young photographers offer free interactive arts-focused events to their families, friends, and neighbors, and through the stunning portraits they make, My Story youth can focus the lens of public discourse on the communities they call home. All families who participate in "We are Portland" receive free portraits from their sitting.

Our vision for "We are Portland" is for our young photographers to use community portraiture to fully represent the diversity and vibrancy of the city of Portland, and for our students' work to be accessible to all Portlanders.

The project infuses public spaces with interactive arts-based experiences that change the way residents view themselves and the places they inhabit. In the midst of the excitement these events generate, new relationships are formed that cross cultural and generational boundaries. We hope you will stop by the SE Uplift Community Building to view this brilliant work.

Everyone deserves a safe, decent place to live. It's a belief that our work here at ROSE is based on, and together with many non-profit and government agencies, we are the safety net for thousands of families in the Portland Metro area.  We know that housing gives people an opportunity to build better lives. To succeed, you need a place to call home.

City Council will soon be voting on the budget for the next fiscal year, and vital support for housing services is at stake. We need your voice now, while key decisions are being made.

Nonprofits [and neighborhoods] don't have to sit on the sidelines during an election year. There are a number of things nonprofits can do to promote democracy as long as they operate in a nonpartisan manner, as required by federal regulations. This means that nonprofits can neither support nor oppose candidates for elected office or a particular political party-whether at the federal, state, or local levels. GROWING GARDENS was founded on a simple but revolutionary idea: the seeds of a healthier world are planted in our own backyards. So it's only natural that our signature event should take place in ten of them this summer. Ten chefs, ten back yards, ten delicious dinners prepared with sustainably-sourced ingredients. In our backyards, magical things happen.
