Our Neighborhoods

Season's Greetings!

As we embark on the year's end with its many gleeful celebrations and countless opportunities for reflection; SE Uplift thanks each and every community leader, partner organization, neighborhood association and community group for the amazing work you do in an effort to UPLIFT the community.

We wish you a very healthy and happy holiday season. May 2012 bring more opportunity to thrive together as an inspired community.

"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled
by a spark from another person.
Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude
of those who have lighted the flame within us."

- Albert Schweitzer

The Wikman Building - Arleta Library is not only a jewel of a building with recognized historical significance, it represents a legacy handed down to us by forward thinking citizens who donated their hard earned nickels and dimes to provide free access to knowledge in this historically undervalued and underserved Southeast Portland community.

It's that time of year again to help out brightening the holiday spirit for those families in need this season. The Ardenwald-Johnson Creek Neighborhood District Association has selected two anonymous families in need to receive donated Christmas gifts for 2011 Ardenwald Christmas Families program.

Donations are being accepted until Sunday, December 18, 2011, and the donations will be delivered later in the week to the families before Christmas Day.

Donate by going to the Ardenwald Christmas Families web page at www.ardenwald.org/christmasfam and browse at the "wish list." The "wish list" page updates frequently and any items on the list means that item is still needed. Items no longer on the list means the item has been arranged by another donator to be donated.

To drop off the donation(s), contact Lisa Gunion-Rinker at 503-659-7807 to make arrangements. You can also drop off the item at the Ardenwald Holiday Potluck at the Ardenwald Elementary School in Milwaukie on Tuesday, December 13, 6:30 p.m.

Cafe au Play's Fourth Annual Jingle Mingle Holiday Tree Sale is in full swing - November 25th - December 20th!  Buy your tree at Cafe au Play this year!  Choose a beautiful fresh cut Noble or Grand Fir from Molalla's Timber Ridge Tree Farm.  We are OPEN EVERYDAY 8:30am - 5:30pm and OPEN LATE Thursday - Monday until 7pm.

This fundraiser is crucial for keeping Cafe au Play going in 2012. A successful tree sale will support programming and site improvements and allow us to staff Cafe au Play sufficiently.

Also, this year we have a full event schedule to bring community spirit to the sale.

Land Use & Sustainability

The holidays often bring more food, fun and festivities - and all of the waste that can go along with those things. This year, you have a new place to scrape your holiday plates and holiday leftovers. Now you can add food scraps - from meat to bones to dairy - along with yard debris to your green roll cart for weekly pickup.  To learn more:  call the curbside hotline at 503 823 7202, email or visit www.portlandcomposts.com.

pp In order to assist your review of the Portland Plan, SE Uplift has prepared a "cheat-sheet" pointing out the sections of the Portland Plan we think our coalition neighborhoods will be particularly interested in. The Framework for our Region

Tuesday, December 13, 10:00 am
SW Community Center at Gabriel Park
6820 SW 45th St. Portland

The Portland Metro Region's transportation infrastructure is the framework for the Region, critical to its economic health and that of Oregon. The League of Women Voters of Portland will welcome two of the Region's leading transportation experts to its December meeting.

The League of Women Voters is a public policy organization. This event is part of the League's work to stay informed about the ability of the public sector to meet growing demands in the midst of budget stress at all levels of government.

The event is free and open to the public.

bring your bag

Kicking the plastic bag habit: practice makes perfect Learning something new takes practice, time and patience. So does forming a new habit, like remembering to bring a reusable bag to the grocery store.

In October, the City of Portland enacted a landmark restriction on the use of single-use plastic bags at most grocery stores and large retail stores. These are the bags that many shoppers received in grocery stores and pharmacies, and they also can cause environmental problems, including at recycling facilities and littering Oregon rivers and the Pacific Ocean.

Resolutions Northwest's Neighborhood Mediation Program provides neighbors and families in Portland with a confidential and compassionate process for resolving conflicts in a positive and personal way. Community mediation grew out of the social and political movements of the 1960s to empower community members to resolve their own disputes, rather than take it to the slow and expensive court system. There is no cost for Portland residents to use this service. Our program is funded primarily through a grant with the City of Portland's Office of Neighborhood Involvement but we also rely on donations for a portion of the program's expenses.

The Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon and The Pongo Fundwill give caregivers free cat food throughout January, 2012, when they bring a feral or stray cat to the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon (FCCO) to be spayed or neutered. All spay/neuter services are provided at FCCO on a donation-basis. Food will be given while supplies last.

FCCO encourages caregivers to get their free-roaming cats spayed and neutered before they go into heat and have kittens in the warmer months. A cat can be safely spayed or neutered as early as two-months old. FCCO loans traps and can help caregivers with large colonies or single cats.
