Our Neighborhoods

Greetings!

The 5-person volunteer selection committee will be reviewing each application and making recommendations for funding as group by mid- December.  The committee's recommendations will then be presented to the SE Uplift Board of Directors for approval on Monday, January 2, 2012.  All applicants will be notified of final decisions by January 9 along with an announcement of the winners on our website and in local media.  We're pleased to have received so many new and exciting proposals this year!

wikman

SE Uplift is excited to be a supporting partner in the effort to create a new public space in the Foster-Powell neighborhood. The Wikman Building, located at 4420 SE 64th Avenue, was once the Arleta library but is now vacant. Multnomah County currently owns this beautiful building but it has been deemed a surplus property. A coalition of community organizations is collaborating to acquire the Wikman Building and restore it for community use. The partners envision a combination of entrepreneurial and community-building activities such as a multi-cultural community center, grocery co-op, farmers market, business incubator, commercial kitchen and internet café, which would also offer multi-purpose rooms for meetings, classes and events.

Please join us in supporting this effort! Here are some ways you can help:

Feast for Southeast is a grassroots Thanksgiving event, for the community BY the community. It is planned by a group of neighbors from all over Southeast Portland and focused on the neighborhoods encompassing Mt. Scott/Arleta, Woodstock, Brentwood/Darlington and Foster/Powell. The group is led by Roberto Selva and strongly supported by Lifehouse Church, various SE Portand Neighborhood Associations, local nonprofits and businesses, and other sponsors as well as individual donors and volunteers.

Feast for Southeast will take place at Mt. Scott Community Center on Thanksgiving day - from 2pm to 4pm. Whether individuals are interested in attending, volunteering, or both - it is a wonderful opportunity to share a great meal with some neighbors, talk about what you're thankful for in 2011, and what you'd like to be thankful for in 2012.

It's time! The low-limbed trees are waiting. The underground moles are tunneling away from the surface. The dirt is piled and ready for exploration. We are armed with spoons and magnifying lenses, bug boxes and collection bags. We have curious minds, imaginative ideas and swift-moving feet. We are not stopped by wind, rain, clouds, or shade. We are Nuts About Nature!!!

City Nature's "Nuts About Nature" programs have become a popular way for young children to enjoy the nature of Portland's Parks. Offering programs since April 2008, we have found the perfect mix of play, imagination, science, stories, art and songs to keep every child engaged. Our experienced Environmental Education Teachers are highly trained and finely tuned to the developmental level of the young child. Plus, we like to sing silly songs, are not afraid to teach about local plants and animals using puppets & real clipboards, and we can turn just about any ecological concept into a tag game.

bring your bag

Kicking the plastic bag habit: practice makes perfect Learning something new takes practice, time and patience. So does forming a new habit, like remembering to bring a reusable bag to the grocery store.

In October, the City of Portland enacted a landmark restriction on the use of single-use plastic bags at most grocery stores and large retail stores. These are the bags that many shoppers received in grocery stores and pharmacies, and they also can cause environmental problems, including at recycling facilities and littering Oregon rivers and the Pacific Ocean.

FOTFriends of Trees Announces Second Annual Portland Leaf Harvest
Nonprofit promotes the benefits of the community coming together for a shared goal.

The Portland Leaf Harvest kicks off November 10, when more than 50 volunteers from Friends of Trees and local Home Depot stores will collect and bag leaves from the yards of homebound seniors served by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Loaves & Fishes Center. This is the second year that Friends of Trees, Loaves & Fishes, and Home Depot have partnered up on the project, which is considered a model for other community groups to follow.

Every community group that signs up for the Portland Leaf Harvest will receive a packet from Friends of Trees that includes yard debris bags and waivers for the city's three leaf depots. However, West cautions that the groups will not be matched up with residents. "We are providing knowledge, tips and waivers for the event, but it is up to the organization to locate those residents who might need the service." West noted that this is an ideal project for organizations like church groups, who are familiar with members of their congregation.

For more information, visit www.FriendsofTrees.org or www.PortlandLeafHarvest.com.

On-the-Move Community Integration to Offer Reading Classes for Adults with Disabilities

Southeast-based nonprofit organization, On-the-Move Community Integration, has received a grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust to help provide reading classes to adults with disabilities.

Numerous adults with disabilities who currently participate with On-the-Move have requested reading instruction, and On-the-Move is pleased to offer this much-needed functional reading skills program. The classes are open to all adults with special needs in our community. Overall, the reading skills program fills a critical void in the Portland Metropolitan Area, as most adults with special needs are proven to have competency levels much lower than the potential they possess. On-the-Move, founded in 2007, was created for education and charitable purposes to combat the social isolation experienced by adults with disabilities. For information about the program, please contact by email or call 503 287.0346.
