Our Neighborhoods

Greetings!

SE Uplift says Farewell to a Beloved Board Member,

Pete Jacobsen

Pete Jacobsen

Every year the SE Uplift Neighborhood Coalition is incredibly fortunate to connect with countless outstanding community leaders. In every case, we celebrate the gifts these volunteers offer through their generous commitment of time, energy, vision and celebration. As a neighborhood coalition, our board is made of up these amazing volunteers who donate time and energy to both their neighborhood board and to the coalition.

Each year in July SE Uplift welcomes new board members as we say farewell to retiring board members. It is always exciting to greet new people but is as equally difficult to say goodbye. This year, SE Uplift says farewell to Pete Jacobsen who has generously given his time, energy, talent and vision to the coalition for the past four years. Read the Full Story.

Help us Build the SE Uplift Commons!

SE Uplift is continuing work to convert our grounds at 3534 SE Main into a valued community space. With a grant from EMSWCD we will replace 3,000 square feet of grass and invasive weeds with native plants. We are partnering with the Herb Shoppe to include medicinal plants and habitat for native pollinators. Our vision for the space includes native plants with signage to show visitors what they're seeing, a meandering trail through the site, and a sitting area for our tenants and visitors to the space. We hope to host workshops on medicinal plants and to provide garden space for the community to share in the future. Please volunteer with us! Email tim@southeastuplift.org, or call (503) 232-0010 ext. 313.

tidemanjcGet Involved in Research about SE Portland Neighborhoods, Watershed Health, and Nature. What are the benefits of small scale natural areas in our neighborhoods?

Sarah Church, a PhD candidate from the University of British Columbia (and former Portlander), is looking for people to take part in research about neighborhood nature.  Through a conversation and interview of approximately 1 hour, you will be asked to explore your experiences with and thoughts on watershed health projects like rain gardens, bioswales, and habitat restoration, and how those experiences relate to social, civic, and environmental issues.  Participants should be familiar with neighborhoods in the Tabor to the River area (Mount Tabor to the Willamette River between SE Hawthorne and SE Powell Boulevards). You don't need to have direct experience with any of these types of projects to participate.  For more information or to participate, please contact Sarah at churchsp@interchange.ubc.ca or 208-310-2841.

Metro is hosting FREE natural gardening workshops happening through September around the Portland metropolitan region. The workshops are just one part of Metro's natural gardening program, which offers a range of free resources to the community about how to garden without harmful chemicals and protect our kids, our pets and our waterways.

Make a lasting difference by becoming a Neighborhood Coordinator with Friends of Trees !

FoT just completed the most successful planting season in its 21 year history.  There were 29 separate planting events in eastside Portland neighborhoods that resulted in more than 4,500 new street and yard trees being planted.

Neighborhood Coordinators are essential to this success! Friends of Trees is always seeking motivated volunteers for each neighborhood's coordinator team, but there are currently no Neighborhood Coordinators in Brooklyn and Sellwood-Westmoreland. Being a Neighborhood Coordinator is an excellent opportunity to meet your neighbors, develop valuable organizing skills, making an important and lasting difference in the community.

Neighborhood Coordinator trainings will be held on Tuesday, August 16th from 6:00pm - 8:30pm. Contact  Andy Meeks for more information.

Sign up for National Night Out 2011

A National Night Out party can be an excellent opportunity to not only help neighbors get to know and like each other but to develop neighborhood safety strategies. Neighbors who participate in activities together will have a better memory of who their neighbors are and a positive association with those who were part of the activity.
