Medicinal Garden in the Umpqua Bank
Build Your Block Challenge!
SE Uplift is one of three finalists in Umpqua Bank's Hawthorne Build Your Block Challenge!! Vote every day through April 15th at the Hawthorne Umpqua at 3557 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
Imagine a lush pocket park full of native and medicinal plants - where community members can relax, share tea with friends, enjoy lunch, garden, gather for educational workshops, read, or play a friendly game of chess/checkers. The benefits for this community pocket park will be far-reaching and available to all members of the community. Imagine neighbors and business leaders working together toward a safer and more sociable community space. Imagine a haven for native pollinators that will increase the pollination of plants nearby. Imagine educational workshops from local experts specializing in naturopathic and botanical medicine, creating pollinator habitat, gardening for food and medicine, aromatherapy, and essential oil distillation!
Vote once each day through April 15th. Your vote will help us transform this unused space into a community asset! We greatly appreciate you taking the time to stop by Umpqua Bank on Hawthorne to vote! Learn more about the challenge and the other finalists.

Woodstock Unimproved Street Project Wins Award for Student Achievement
Roadway Not Improved, a student-led project looking at community-based alternative solutions to the challenges of unimproved streets in the Woodstock Neighborhood has been selected by The Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association as the recipient of the 2010 Award for Student Achievement in Planning. 5 Portland State University students in the Masters of Urban and Regional Planning Program spent 6 months surveying the Woodstock neighborhood, talking to residents, and creating feasible solutions to the many unimproved streets in the neighborhood. The final product was a Community Toolkit meant to be used by residents interested in creating their own improvements. Currently, one group of residents has been awarded a SE Uplift Small Grant to take on their own improvement project on a particularly problematic block, affectionately known as "Lake Carleton." If you would like more information on this project or would like to download the community toolkit, check out the project website- www.roadwaynotimproved.com.

BTA Alice Awards! Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 5 pm Pure Space, 1315 NW Overton, Portland, OR
From a pool of strong and diverse candidates, a group of winners emerged. In each, we see strength and a bold vision of the future. In each, leadership and guts. These individuals did not sit back and wait for things to get easy. They did not wait for the movement to come their way. "Why wait?" they asked. Instead, they took stock of their resources, looked to their allies and partners, and seized the moment of transformation.
These are the individuals who have made Portland and Oregon the national leader in transportation and livability. These are the leaders who will build the next generation of transportation. Buy your ticket to Alice. Come join us to celebrate these leaders, the superheroes of today and the superheroes of tomorrow.
