Chris Smither: Tickets Still Available
By Ray
From way before we started the theater I have been a "Smither" fan. After we started, his name as a possible act was brought up to me as many times as probably anyone's. I also know he has a huge and passionate fan base. His live shows are revered.
Sometimes when we book an artist of his stature, it is very interesting to see how far fans are willing to travel. Yesterday, we took an order from Hoogkarspel, Netherlands. I am not kidding! Another good gauge of what you can expect from a performance is how long an artist has been making a living with his craft. He is one of the few artists still playing today that goes all the way back to the early blues scene, like fellow Playlist Theater alum John Hammond. This will be a seated show, and tickets are about half gone so get yours today.
A little bit about Smither........
Like John Hammond and a handful of other musicians whose careers began in the 1960s blues revival, guitarist, singer, and songwriter Chris Smither can take pride in the fact that he's been there since the beginning. Having distilled his own signature sound of blues and folk for over 40 years, Chris Smither is truly an American original. A profound songwriter, Chris continues to draw deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets and philosophers. From his early days as the New Orleans transplant in the Boston folk scene, through his wilderness years, to his reemergence in the 1990s as one of America's most distinctive acoustic performers, Chris Smither continues to hone his distinctive sound. He has always traveled his own road, eschewing sophisticated studio tricks and staying true to his musical vision.
Chris has developed and maintained loyal friendships over the years with kindred-spirited musicians like Bonnie Raitt and the late Stephen Bruton while at the same time throughout his career has been inspired by and inspiring to today's next-generation of musicians. Reviewers continue to praise his dazzling guitar work, gravelly voice and songwriting. The New York Times: With a weary, well-traveled voice and a serenely intricate finger-picking style, Mr. Smither turns the blues into songs that accept hard-won lessons and try to make peace with fate.

New Show Announcement: Griffin House with full band
By Jimmy
For those of you who attended the Chuck Prophet show, you may recall that 2 new shows would be announced soon. Today comes that announcement: Thursday, September 13th and Friday, September 14th, Griffin House will once again grace the stage of the Playlist Theater. One show is never enough when he comes around, right? (We kept in mind that it is high school football season, so we added the Thursday show.)
Whenever we put the tickets for Griffin House on sale, these go fast......very fast. In fact, the last show that he was here actually sold out in less than 3 hours and the waiting list was at almost 100 tickets by the time the day came.
Griffin has always liked to spend time in this area, and next month his tour will be coming back through... which is great, because his shows are never a disappointment! Over the course of his last few performances here, Griffin has been a solo act. Along with Chuck Prophet, Griffin too has asked about doing a standing show. Having the crowd up and about dancing and singing is an ideal situation and adds to the fun!
After receiving some great responses from the Prophet show, we decided we needed to ink this deal. Tickets will be $20.00 and will feature Griffin with a full band, comprised of 3 guitars and a set of drums.
Ray came to us back in late July about the possibility of doing this/these shows. He had asked if we were interested in bringing him back. That decision was a no brainer. In fact, we told him we needed to do 2 shows in order to make sure everyone gets a chance to see it. He than asked if all of our normal/great supporting help was available to do this show, ie. Bernie, Tom, Mario...
The final line in that email went something like this: "Let me know what you guys think about this. It would be your first show(s) with out me." He had already made plans for being gone around the time when Griffin was available. Although we knew the day would eventually come, we never knew how soon. But what better way to start?! Griffin knows us, and we know him... should be great to work with!
So come help us fill the place, not one but TWO nights in mid-September and get this place ROCKIN!
TICKETS WILL GO ON SALE FRIDAY MORNING AT 10AM. NOT A SECOND EARLIER!
THE LINK BELOW WILL DIRECT YOU TO OUR TICKET WEBSITE PAGE. CHECK BACK TOMORROW MORNING AT 10 AM TO PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS.

Keta Salmon
By Dalton
Keta Salmon is a wild caught salmon found only in the Pacific Ocean near Alaska, The height of keta salmon season reaches from August to September. It's pretty common, with the various types of salmon, to only have a small window of opportunity to catch them. Fortunately, we tracked them down in season.
Keta salmon, also referred to as Chum salmon, has been nicknamed the dog salmon due to its very sharp teeth and the hook nose of the male salmon. It is very mild in flavor, but unlike most salmon has a very firm and coarse texture.
With our current salmon offering on the menu, we knew a special touch was in order. The salmon is crusted with sesame seed and brushed with mustard and sesame oils. It is served with a a side of soy glazed sugar snap peas and red quinoa
Be one of the first to give this special salmon a try... just make sure it's soon while it's still in season!

Working Hard to Pay Taxes
Olympic Gold?
By Ryan
I must admit I didn't pay much attention to the 2012 summer Olympic games. The few things I did pay attention to and will take away from the games are the following: the closing gap between U.S.A men's basketball (the women still dominate) and the rest of the world, the U.S. women's soccer team avenging a World Cup loss to Japan, Mexico winning the gold medal in men's soccer, the triumph & dignity of Michael Phelps, and learning that all of these men and women will now be paying taxes on their 2012 Olympic Medals!
Wait, wait, wait......they have to pay taxes on their Olympic medals? Yeah, that's what I said when I came across Terry Savage's article in the Sunday Chicago SunTimes. Her column is one that I often pay attention to during the course of the week, so when I saw her column heading, "Don't tax Olympic gold medalists or other winners," I knew I had to stop and read. Maybe I'm naive or out in left field, but I just didn't realize that this actually happens. It is the first time I had ever read anything about it. Quite honestly, I still can't believe it.
There is finally some common sense prevailing. President Barack Obama recently announced his support for a bill, presented by Republican Senator Marco Rubio, to make the medalists' medals and winnings free from federal income tax. And many state legislatures have introduced bills to make winnings tax free as well. Well, it's about time. What took so long?
How much are those medals worth you might ask? The gold - $655, the silver - $355, and the bronze less than $5. There is only 1% real gold in those "gold" medals. But U.S. medal winners take home cash prizes of $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze - all of it taxable by current federal law.
Terry Savage goes on to discuss how, "even the Olympic spirit cannot overshadow the divide between those who want to tax success and accomplishment by determining who is 'worthy' of keeping the rewards of their success and who should have the rewards of their personal efforts taxed and distributed to benefit others who are more needy." The article itself creates an entire avenue for a discussion that I am not willing to go down. However, I feel it is a really well thought out and well written article worth reading. I certainly hope we stop taxing Olympic medalists for their accomplishments. It still astounds me that we do. In the end though, it's so American.

Stage 212
Mulan, Jr.
By Brianne
School is back in session, as is evidenced by a collective groan from kids everywhere. And there are plenty of us who are unwilling to let go of the summer season, despite its scorching temperatures.
But one last hurrah is in order, and Stage 212 has got the ticket. Literally. Known for their outstanding theatrical numbers, Stage 212 - one of our neighbors - is hosting a special production called Mulan, Jr. this weekend. Not your typical show, this one features a younger generation of would-be actors and actresses - the summer children's theater. A children's performance featuring an adaptation of a classic Disney flick... how can you go wrong?
Tickets for opening night (Friday) have long come and gone. Don't miss out on the Saturday/Sunday showings. Be sure to secure your tickets before it's too late! Give the ticket office a ring at (815) 224-3025 or stop by the box office. Tickets are only $10 and (as of press time!) are still available for Saturday showings at 1 and 7 p.m. as well as Sunday showings at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
Just remember that when the curtain closes, it's a short walk across the street for a late lunch, early dinner, or anything in between. Uptown Grill: happily serving children of ALL ages...
