New Show Announcement

Ray Wylie Hubbard

By Ryan

Ray Wylie HubbardOn Thursday night October 25th, The Uptown Playlist Theater will be hosting Ray Wylie Hubbard. Many of our regular patrons are probably familiar with the work of Hubbard, but for those of you who are not, it's not often you get the opportunity to see a legend like this in your own back yard. Ray has crossed many music genre's over his long career. From "folk" to Texas country to "honky-tonk fog."

He is now known as a "songwriter's songwriter." If you are an average music fan like myself, it's very possible that you've not heard the name Ray Wylie Hubbard. Once I learned he was playing here, I started to listen to his music, and I was shocked to find that a large majority of the songs I enjoy while working in our dining room were either sung by or written by Ray Wylie Hubbard.

One of the more intriguing bits of information I came across was learning that he has recorded "acclaimed albums" with Gurf Morlix. Gurf Morlix is another artist that has graced the stage of The Uptown Playlist Theater, and again, was relative unknown to myself. But, of all the shows that have gone on here, Gurf Morlix and Sam Baker were probably the show that really opened my musical horizons. Gurf was kind of an introduction to that "cosmic/outlaw Texas country scene" and turned me onto something I never believed would be on my playlist. And to now have another legend of that genre, with perhaps even more history behind him, will be an experience that I very much look forward to. On Ray's webpage I came across a review of his career and his latest album from the viewpoint of  Richard Skanse, Editor of Lone Star Music Magazine. Below I included a few excerpts that I found to be very descriptive of our future guest. Here's hoping that many of you are as excited for this show as I am!
____________

"As a music lover of impeccable taste, odds are that you're already looking forward to spending the better part of the next hour - and several more after that - getting rather obsessively familiar with this latest serving of song and groove from Ray Wylie Hubbard. Having no doubt played his last album, 2010's A. Enlightenment, B. Endarkenment (Hint: There is No C), to digital bits - and committed to memory such earlier chestnuts as Snake Farm, Growl, Eternal and Lowdown, Crusades of the Restless Knights, and maybe even everything else going all the way back to that 1975 Cowboy Twinkies LP that Hubbard himself would rather you forget - you probably can't wait to tuck into The Grifter's Hymnal and leisurely savor it from end to end.

Ray Wylie HubbardThis, of course, is how things should be. But a couple of variables could throw the above plan off the rails a bit. Suppose, for instance, that the damn Mayans were right, and what's left of 2012 is all the time we have left, period. Or, maybe despite that aforementioned impeccable music taste, you've somehow managed to make it this far into the 21st century without ever hearing of this Hubbard fellow. Grim scenarios, yes, but fear not; because whether you're short on time due to an impending apocalypse or simply need a tidy introduction to bring you up to speed, the opening track on The Grifter's Hymnal, "Coricidin Bottle," tells you everything you need to know in just under two minutes. What it tells you about The Grifter's Hymnal is that the record rocks. And what it tells you about Ray Wylie Hubbard is, he's the kind scrapper poet with the devil-may-care wherewithal to write both "lay down a groove like a monkey gettin' off" and "shakes the mortal coil round my amaranthine soul" into the same song - and the lethal charm and chops to pull it off.

Hubbard's been chasing that carrot since the '60s, when he started his journey as a folk singer in his native Oklahoma before falling in with the wild and wooly cosmic/outlaw Texas country scene of the '70s - in large part by way of penning the immortal "Up Against the Wall (Redneck Mother)," which Jerry Jeff Walker recorded on his seminal 1973 album ¡Viva Terlingua! Hubbard gigged constantly and recorded sporadically throughout the rest of the '70s and '80s, but it wasn't until he stumbled out of his "honky-tonk fog" and into sobriety that his career as a songwriter's songwriter began in earnest with 1994's Loco Gringo's Lament. He's moved from strength to strength ever since, recording a handful of acclaimed albums with noted producers Lloyd Maines and Gurf Morlix and cementing his standing as one of the most respected artists on the modern Americana scene."

New Beer on Tap: Stone IPA

By Jimmy

Coming this week, there will be a new draft beer added to our microbrew selection. In the quest to provide a great beer selection from breweries all over the world, there are criteria we look for in choosing what is added. Seasonality is one of them, and the summer is a perfect time for a high hop IPA. We are introducing Stone IPA coming from Escondido, California.

Stone IPAStone Brewery was born back in 1996, so it is fairly new to the brew-making game. Steve Wagner and Greg Koch met when Steve, playing in a band, had rented a studio owned by Greg. A few years later they again met at a beer seminar in Los Angeles. Seeing both had such an interest in beer and the beer-making process, they also realized they liked the same tastes and ideals in brewing. After attending several beer seminars, touring over 100 breweries and learning about the brewing process, they decided they needed to open their own brewery. Stone quickly became one of America's fastest growing breweries and is now the 11th largest brewery in the United States.

An IPA (India Pale Ale) is by definition highly hopped and containing a high percentage of alcohol. Stone Brewery's IPA was born in 1997, though the concept originally developed in the late 18th century when the English would send beer across the ocean on ships to India. With no refrigeration and taking so long to get there, the beer never tasted like it was intended to. They did know that hops and alcohol are natural preservatives, so the more of each, the better it will be after the months it took to reach its destination. Stone IPA has a ton of hop aroma with a medium malt character and abundant citrus flavors. Hops, hops and more hops is what this beer is all about. Beer Advocate recently rated this as the "King of the West Coast IPA's." Next time you are in, give one of these 16 oz. full-flavored brews a try.

Fresh Fruit and Lump Crab Meat Salad

By Brett gulf coast fishermen

The heat is unbearable this week, and it looks like we might even have a few more days to go... and who knows what's in store after that! If you're like me, then you're tired of cooking, you're  tired of standing around in a hot kitchen, and you just want to be cool! This week we will do our part by providing a very light and refreshing summer salad. So to beat the heat, this week I recommend you try our lump crab and fresh fruit salad.

The presentation of this salad is awesome - there are so many colors! The salad comes on a bed of iceberg lettuce decorated with colorful, fresh fruit. Some of the fruits include watermelon, pineapple, grapes, kiwi and trio of melon. In the middle of the salad, there is a scoop of real lump crab meat (not the fake stuff) and a scoop of cottage cheese. To top it off - the best part - is it also comes with a scoop of orange sorbet, so now you don't even need to order dessert! This special salad has been a big hit so stop in while it lasts!
