New Show Announcement
Miles Nielsen & The Rusted Hearts
By Ryan
Performing Wednesday night November 21st will be the Rockford, IL based band, Miles Nielsen & The Rusted Hearts. We will hosting this show the night before Thanksgiving. We have never had a show the night before Thanksgiving but, after having Miles here previously, we made the decision that this would be the perfect night to host this show. We suggested it to Miles last April and he instantly obliged. If you are one of the many people that enjoy going out on Thanksgiving Eve to have a good time, you are going to want to make arrangements to be here.
Miles Nielsen has really become something of a big thing recently. He is playing shows all over the country and was responsible for the sound track of the Oscar winning movie "Undefeated". They may not be playing shows at smaller venues like ours for much longer. And as someone following in the footsteps of his own father, I hate to use this and put it out there (I know how you feel Miles), but he is also the son of Cheap Trick front man, Rick Nielsen. Miles is carving his own niche in the music industry and may be on the verge of creating his own famed musical career.
When Miles played here in April, we wrote the following one week before his show. "As the day of the Miles Nielsen show grows near, I feel an urge to put a warning out there for those of you who have not yet gotten tickets. We've heard a lot of people buzzing about this show. If you don't get your tickets soon, you may end up on the inevitable ticket waiting list."
Well, I can promise you that this will be the case again. I had not heard of Miles Nielsen prior to the first show, but it seemed as if a lot of our patrons were well aware of him. And those that weren't, like myself, certainly are aware of him now. The show is easily in my Top 5 favorite that we have had here. The musical performance was fantastic, and Miles was quite the entertainer as well. I truly believe this is a show, and a night, that you don't want to miss.

From the Bar
Champagne Under the Sea
By Jimmy
I recently read an article about some of the world's oldest champagne selling for more than $160,000 at an auction in Finland. This amazed me and I had to read further. Apparently back in 2010, divers found a shipwreck in the Baltic Sea that contained over 160 bottles of champagne dating back as early as the late 18th century. The bottles were stored perfectly horizontal in cold, dark waters of the shipwreck for more than 200 years. What is remarkable is that after opening one of these 200 year old bottles, it is said that they actually taste better than one that is stored in a cellar for all that time. Well just recently, some of these wines were sold and one went for as much as $18,800 for a single bottle. The brands found at the bottom of the sea were Cliquot, Heidsieck and Juglar. Juglar was a wine house that disappeared back in the 1820's, but Cliquot and Heidieck are still producing champagnes today.
This was interesting because we carry both of these brands on our wine list.

Cliquot was founded in 1772 by Phillipe Cliquot-Muiron. His son, Francois Clicquot then in control of the company, married Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin but he died in 1805. This left his widow (veuve in French) in control of a company variously involved in banking, wool trading, and champagne production. Under Madame Cliquot's guidance, the firm focused entirely on the wine-making process and, over time, established champagne as a favored drink of nobility. She is credited with a great breakthrough in champagne handling that made mass production of the wine possible. Vueve has been a premium champagne for hundreds of years and is easily recognised by its distinctive bright yellow label. If you have a good reason to celebrate, Vueve, like Dom Perignon, is a great champagne.
Heidsieck and Co. was founded in 1785 by Florens Lous Heidsieck and also quickly became one of the premiere champagne houses of France. It also became a highly distributed wine to the noble courts of France and England. By 1815, Henry Piper had joined the company along with Florens' nephew Christian. After the death of Florens, the company name changed to Piper-Heidsieck. Over the years, the look of the company has gone to its current red label - also one that is highly recognizable. In 2000, the company was the first house to introduce 1/4 size bottles to the market. Those cute red bottles with the gold foil were the latest trend. Many of you who are familiar with the TV series "Sex and the City" might have seen the girls enjoying one of these through a straw on one of their many nights out on the town.
Next time you are in, try one of the best and oldest of champagnes in the world... fortunately not at auction prices!

On Special
Pretzel Crusted Rainbow Trout
By Josh

On special this week, we are featuring Pretzel Crusted Rainbow Trout. This fish is native to the tributaries that feed into the Pacific Ocean from North America and Asia. Most closely related to the salmon, this trout is a popular target for sport fisherman. Being very popular in Western cuisine, rainbow trout is typically farm raised or caught wild within the streams of the U.S. This trout has a tender and mild flesh with almost nutty flavor and is sought after for its omega-3 fatty acids which help prevent heart attack, stroke and heart disease.
Here at Uptown, we are lightly pan frying the trout in a pretzel crust which is a new spin on the traditional bread crumb crust used at many other places. The fish is then topped with a stone ground mustard caper butter with a side of sauteed french style green beans and fried shallots. This light and fresh dish is a great take on a perfect summer entree that will definitely leave you fullfilled.

July 3rd Fireworks
Watch from our Patio!
Our hours for the Fourth of July weekend will be:
Tuesday, July 3rd | 11am to 10pm
Wednesday, July 4th | 4pm to 10pm
The city of Peru will host their fireworks on Tuesday night, July 3rd at dusk. The fireworks will be shot off from Water Street which is just a few blocks down the road from us. Over the years we have been able to see several good shows from our front entrance. Now that we have revamped our sidewalk tables, come enjoy a great view of the Peru fireworks.
Obviously, the fireworks that are let off close to the ground, are those that can be heard, but not seen. The rest of the show is in plain sight looking west from either our patio or sidewalk. I know the crowds on Water Street can be huge, so why fight it? Stop down to the Uptown, pull up a seat and of course our staff will be here to serve cocktails, appetizers, dinner or any other preference you might have, no wrist band required.
