Missing Super Bowl Footage Found

The Un-Super Bowl

I am not the biggest sports fan in the world, so maybe this is something that many sports fanatics already know. I was fascinated last week to find out that no known tape or recording of any kind exists from Superbowl I. My first thoughts were it was kind of odd that last week I was reminiscing back to 1967 and the blizzard and then to flash back to that first super bowl, they were within a week of each other. It was also interesting the same champion came out of both games.
What has become one of the biggest events of the year in America had such a humble beginning. So big in fact, that it's hard to comprehend that unless you were there or you watched it on TV like I did as an 8 year old, you never saw any of it. Two networks covered the game and neither one saved the tape. Back then, there was limited or no access to home video recorders. It was seen by 27 million people and it vanished. It had been long assumed that there were no copies, until recently. Back in 1967, an engineer working at WDAU in Scranton, Pennsylvania recorded it thinking someday it might be valuable. For 38 years, it sat in an attic.
While the NFL lays claim to rights of the tape, it is being restored by the Paley Center as it is an important piece of Americana. A ticket to this game was going for the unheard of price of $12. It was the only Superbowl not sold out. McDonald's boasted of two billion served, and Muriel sold cigars for 10 cents. The replays remind you they are replays. The announcers were Jack Whitaker, Ray Scott and Frank Gifford. Most of the game is intact, but the half time show is missing, nothing like today I bet, and a big piece of the third quarter.

Sweetheart Conversation Hearts
By Jim
| February is the time of year where you will find those famous little sweet heart candies all over stores. The New England Confectionary Company (NECCO) is the manufacturer of what has become the traditional Valentine's Day candy. The sweetheart conversation hearts with all those different sayings from "be mine", "luv me" and "kiss me" is celebrating its 145th birthday this year. The company has been making one of the sweetest ways of saying I love you every year since the Civil War.
In the 1860's, NECCO originally began with printed paper notes tucked inside the boxes. In time, the idea came to print sayings on the actual candy and early on it was done with very primitive hand tools until it developed a machine press to keep up with demand. Up until the 1990's, these same sayings continued each year. It was then they decided to update the sayings every year and even retire some. Just like everything else, they needed to get with the times. It was then instead of "call me" it was "email me", and for the first time in 2010, they held a public survey to choose what would be introduced this year. Those winners are "Tweet Me," "Text Me," "You Rock," "Soul Mate," "Love Bug," and "Me + You." Choosing the mottos can be tricky because they can not be offensive, distasteful and generally can fit no more than two words with four letters each.
During the six weeks around Valentines Day, 8 billion of these candy hearts are sold so NECCO must produce 100,000 pounds of the candy hearts each day. Dont forget these classics for your sweetheart.

Things to Try This Week |
Here are three things picked by our staff, the people who know our menus the best, that they think stand out from the more than 500 items you will find on our food and drink menu.
From Nikki - Spinach Salad - Why I like this salad and think you should try it is because it's never wrong to go a little healthier than you usually want to. Everyone knows spinach is healthy, you can even ask "Popeye". Eggs, bacon bits, and almonds have always been in my top choices to add to a salad since I first started high school and we had a salad bar. Another reason you should try it, is you can add any one of our dressings to go along with it and make it the perfect taste for you.
From Jim - Steamed Mussels - This weeks featured pasta is steamed mussels with lemon grass. We take a full pound and steam them with basil, shallot and a white wine lemon grass broth and serve it over linguini. With over 17 species of edible mussels, these sweet flavor blue mussels are made complete by the broth. The light lemon flavor of this grass blends well with garlic and shallots. Lemon grass is native to India and is widely used in Thai cooking. It is the perfect combination of full flavored mussels and light herb broth. Before I knew it, the bowl was empty and I was using my breadstick to soak up the juice.
From Ryan - Roasted Garlic Chicken and Spinach Pasta - When I was 16 and 17 years old I made more of these on a saturday night than I cared to ever see again. Yet, I still would always finding myself having one for dinner. After 15 years, you tend to get tired of the same thing. But, I just had one of these pastas and it reminded me of how good it really is. This has been on our menu for 15 years, unchanged. Same cooking procedure since day 1. The combination of garlic butter, white wine, pepper, sundried tomato, chicken and asiago cheese makes this dish my favorite pasta on our everyday menu. If I don't tire of it, there's no chance you will.
