Here's To 2011
| Toasts Heard Around the World By Courtne
As another year comes to an end, we find ourselves celebrating the previous year's accomplishments, forgetting and hopefully forgiving past indiscretions and mistakes, and looking forward to a fresh year, a fresh start. New Year' s Eve is the last of the heavies in holidays. We are all winding down and gearing up for whatever is ahead in the new year. As the clock approaches the inevitable, glasses are raised and cheers and toasts are exchanged between friends and family. Why do we say what we say when raising our glasses with well wishes in our hearts and minds? Where did the toast really come from anyway?
The toasting tradition is said to have begun in the 16th century in England. During the Middle Ages, people were very distrustful of each other and it was not unusual for poisoning to occur. Folks would pour a bit of spirit into each other' s glass almost as mutual tasters . Friends, who perhaps were not as worried about watching their backs, acquired the common cheers, maybe as a result of knowing that at the end of their drink they would still be alive. Some say the clinking of glasses helped keep the evil spirits at bay. The word toast was born from the fact that water at this time was too dangerous to drink. Beer was consumed constantly. Wine could be tainted, so in order to make it taste better a piece of spiced bread (toast) was put in the cup to add flavor as well as absorb some of the acidity. Puts a different spin on that glass of cabernet doesn' t it? Imagine tossing in a piece of toasted Wonder on top of a fine glass of our Belle Glois Pinot Noir.
Different countries have different customs as well. In Italy, the formal toast is Salute, but a nice informal way is to declare CinCin, which comes from peasants in the country who would drink wine from wooden cups. They would declare CinCin to imitate the sound of glass, as it was expensive and not many could afford it. In Germany they say Prost, Spain is Salud, and in China, it is Gan Bei which is "just bottoms up to us". In the East, it is customary to touch the other person' s glass below the rim to signal respect to anyone older or in better position than you. Some other really great toasts and information can be found at this link. Check it out for one of your future parties.
So, Happy New Year to you from all of us at the Uptown Grill. We wish you a great year, and can' t wait to serve you in 2011. I will leave you with an Irish toast I am particularly fond of. "In the New Year may your right hand always be stretched out in friendship but never in want!" Happy New Years and Cheers!

New Years Resolution
| Health Bars By Ryan
As we head into a new year, most everyone will have a resolution or two. Not everyone will be able to fulfill that resolution. One of the most common resolutions I hear about each year is related to one's health. Whether it be to diet or to work out, this seems to be where people start off their new year. I just wanted to share with our readers a very fun website that could help them with their health conscious New Year's resolutions. Good luck!
The website is called elementbars.com You can log onto the homepage and create your own account. From there you create your own energy bar. They have a questionaire you can fill out that will guide you towards ingredients that best suit your lifestyle. You mix and match the ingredients of your choice and it's that easy, you have just created your very own energy bar. The company will ship the bars to your address. Each bar costs $3, but they do offer their more popular mixes at a reduced rate of $2.50 per bar. Minimum order is 1 case or 12 bars. Sounds like fun.
Try it out here.

Uptown Playlist Theater
| Paul Cebar, Friday, January 7th, 2011 By Jimmy
This will be the second time that Paul Cebar has graced the Playlist Theater Stage. It was September, 2009 the last time he rocked the stage here. If there ever was a show that I was as pleasantly surprised after watching, this was it. Up until that time, I had never heard of him and I guess I did not know what to expect. Once the first song started, I knew it was going to be a fun night and I bet all of those that attended would say the same.

| Click picture for more on Paul Cebar |
Many attempts have been made to describe Paul's mixture of wide-ranging musical influences. A good basic description is a combination of singer-songwriter, that is heavily into African, Latin, Caribbean, reggae, zydeco, R&B and soul styles. He is a long time king of Chicago and Milwaukee's live music. Paul Cebar And The Milwaukeeans have been igniting dance floors since the mid-80's at high, low, and in between-class joints not only in Milwaukee, Madison, Minneapolis, and Chicago, but also throughout the world. They have appeared at several House Of Blues clubs and can be said to be a fixture at Milwaukee's Annual Lakefront Summerfest Festival. They can also invariably be found in New Orleans during the Jazz And Heritage Festival, which Paul has been attending since 1979; in 1998 Paul attained a long held personal goal when the band played the main stage. They have also appeared on the Prairie Home Companion radio show several times.
The past Cebar show at the Playlist Theater was by far one of the best performances, with the least number of people attending. This show is sure to be an excellent one again, so don't miss out. You cannot listen to this band live and not dance.

New on Special
| Throwback Thursday By Ryan
Each week on Thursday we are going to visit the past. In the very near future we have plans to revamp our current menu. When we do this, there will be a few menu items that must go. This usually causes an uproar with our customers. Whether we sell 100 per month or 10 a month, whenever we remove a menu item it is usually met with strong resistance and sometimes even petition. This is how the shrooms found their way back to our everyday menu. Thank you shroomie groupies!
Our idea is to bring back menu items from the past and give our readers a say in which menu item it will be every week. We will listen to your votes and then in each newsletter from here on out, unveil this weeks "Throwback Special." We will serve the special all day every Thursday. There are still cries for the fried chicken salad, the blt and the vegetable quesadilla just to name a few. The full list of throwback specials is included below. So make sure to read the newsletter each week and give us your vote. If this takes off, you'll see an old menu item on our menu each week, like clockwork.
Here are a few of our past specials, but not limited to:
mexican club veggie club fried ravs blt blt club turkey burger vegetable queso chicken queso mexican pizza fried chicken salad curly fries elvis burger cobb salad custard pie pasta purses in a white wine cream sauce pasta purses with bolognaise sauce
You can also follow us via Facebook where we will make the announcement, along with our newsletter each week.

Things to Try This Week
| Here are three things our staff (the people who know our menus the best) has picked that they think stands out from the more than 500 items you will find on our food and drink menu.
From Jessica (Uptown Server) - Mesculyn Salad - When customers ask me what I would recommend, it's always so hard to choose. I love so many things on our menu. The other night after work, a few of the girls and I ordered some food, and I got the Mesculyn, glazed walnuts, and gorgonzola salad. I was telling the girls that when I was pregnant, this salad was one of the only things I craved. I would take one home from work or I would call and ask Andrew to bring one home for me. It is definitely still one of my favorites! This salad is served with our balsamic vinaigrette, and I have to say, I am a huge fan of the balsamic, gorgonzola, and walnut flavor combination. Some people think salads are boring, but this one is far from it. If you're too thinking you're too hungry to order just a salad, you can always add grilled chicken, seared tuna, or any one of our salad toppings. Salads can be so underrated. I say, give this one a try!
From Jimmy - Piper Heidsieck Champagne - Many of you may remember how this pretty little red bottle gained popularity a few years back from the hit sitcom "Sex and the City". It was the "in" thing to be seen sipping this champagne split from a straw. All the girls were doing it. Sales skyrocketed those years. Well, other than being a popular image boost, it really is a great champagne. This blend is made from a majority of the pinot noir grape mixed with pinot meunier and chardonnay. It is aged for at least 24 months and has notes of citrus, pear and Granny Smith apples. Celebrate the New Year with notes that bring thoughts of the spring. Or just sip on it with a straw "Sex and the City" style.
From Ryan - Emmentaler Cheese - This is a cheese from Switzerland, the Anderes families' home country. It is known as being similar to swiss cheese here in the United States, but not all Swiss cheese is Emmentaler. The cheese originally comes from the Emme Valley in the Canton of Bern. This is a yellow medium hard cheese with "holes" similar to that of swiss cheese. You will find this cheese on our panini sandwich special this week. Sure, this cheese has some sentimental value to me personally, but it is really worth a try.
