Holiday Party Trays Done Easy
Uptown Catering Trays
By Ryan

cheese trayThe holiday season brings a lot of joy to just about everyone. It also brings a lot of running around for presents, wrapping the gifts and making food to bring to parties. Every year there is more and more to do, more and more people to buy for, or parties to go to. This holiday season you can check one thing off your list of "To-Do's" with our catering trays.

All of our appetizers, sandwiches, pastas or salads are available in large trays to be picked up at the time you'd like. Most of our appetizers are available in attractive trays of 30-40 pieces. Here are a few examples: crab rangoon, bacon and cheddar potato skins, grilled chicken quesadillas, hot wings with blue cheese sauce, rumaki, shrimp cocktail, or even a fresh veggie tray. We can also create trays of bulk sandwiches, salads or even pastas. Just let us know what you'd like, when you want to pick it up and we'll have it ready for you. Save yourself some time this holiday season!

One selection particularly good for the holiday season is our Artisanal Cheese Sampler.  We serve 5 artisanal cheeses with pears, apples, dried figs, apricots, Mediterranean olives, sugared walnuts, quince paste, bread and Uptown flatbread crackers. All for $22.75. Try and beat that deal at a local grocery store!

The Drop Off Zone
By Ray

drop off zoneHow many times do you approach a public place during winter weather and there is little or no effort to make your entrance as easy as possible. It seems that when I go some where when it is snowing the chances of a public place being shoveled is becoming less and less.

I don't know if it is the father, the business owner or the patriarch in me, in our 25 years in business, it is something I have always insisted on. The two people that have been examples in this were my father, the owner of the Red Door Inn, and my father in-law, the owner of a fifth generation funeral home, curiously both business owners. During storms, in less litigious times my father would have busboys parking cars and also would have someone shoveling nonstop and opening doors while customers were entering. My father-in-law's funeral home is always meticulously shoveled. I think back to September 1985 when my sister was married in Denver, Colorado. She was lucky enough to have over 2 feet of snow on her wedding night. My father in-law shoveled the church entrance for a couple of hours right up to ceremony time. If you are inviting someone into your place, this past generation would never think of doing anything less. How often do you see it today? I used to be the shoveler in chief a long time ago but now it is someone else, usually the janitor or a bus person. When I go out to show them exactly where I want it shoveled and how the openings should be made to the street they look at me like I am psychotic.  I just think it is important for many reasons.

Having a clear sidewalk and a clean "Drop Off Zone" is something you will always find here. It tells people you want their business. We have many elderly customers and making their entrance as safe and easy as possible is important. Not having to sit through a meal or go back to work in dirty or wet clothes is also another major consideration. In the old days you would see most arriving couples and families being dropped off in the "Drop Off Zone" Today I do not notice it as often. Chivalry is not dead, at least not here.

Gift Giving Season
Uptown Gift Cards
By Ray

gift cards
I am sure there are some people out there, they may be few, that have never seen our Gift Cards. Well here you go!

In our 25 years of selling gift certificates, we are on our 5th generation of design. Having an attractive package under the tree is very important. We have always had ours professionally designed so "When you give Uptown it looks Uptown."

Besides our good looks the other reasons you would want to give our gift cards instead anyone elses are many.
  • There are no restrictions - You can use them anytime including holidays.
  • We are open 7 lunches and 7 dinners and 7 inbetweens every week
  • There is no expiration or maintenance fees - They are good forever and we will not decrease your balance for hanging on to them.
  • You do not have to use the whole thing - Any cards with remaining balance can be used for tips or returned to the customer.
  • We are not going anywhere - We have been here since 1985 and will be here tomorrow. We still accept those 1985 gift certificates.
One other idea when you purchase the gift certificate you can give us the recipients email address and we will start sending them Uptown Updates. They wont know where it started coming from but they can start selecting their meals. If you can't make it out or live too far away, no problem.......our Gift Cards are available online. Just place your order and we'll have it in the mail by the end of that day. The Uptown Gift Card is the Christmas Gift you WANT and the gift you want THEM to return.

Warm up with some..
Hot Chocolate
By Jim

hot chocolateWinter has sure set in the last week or so hasn't it? These bitter cold nights make you think of ways to warm up. There is nothing more traditional with cold weather, winter, and dessert than hot chocolate. Just thinking of being bundled up in a warm blanket, sitting by the Christmas tree with all other lights in the house off, watching TV with a mug of hot chocolate just makes you feel warm. Whether you call it hot chocolate or hot cocoa (which there is a difference), it seems this winter warmer is fading away. I rarely see these drinks ordered anymore. Do we just not have time to sit back and relax anymore? Does everyday life, not allow us to do this? Has the drink just lost interest and been forgotten?

Chocolate was made from cocoa beans, the dried and partially fermented seeds of the cacao tree by the Mayans over 2,000 years ago. They created the first chocolate beverage shortly after, and it was actually not near as pleasant as it is today. First of all, it was served cold and ground cocoa seeds were mixed with water, cornmeal and chili peppers. They poured the drink back and forth from a cup to a pot until a thick foam developed. Over the years, after many variations, it became popular in Europe and then brought to America and was even used medicinally to treat stomach diseases.

Although Americans use the term "hot chocolate" and "hot cocoa" interchangeably, there is a distinction between the two. The difference between them is cocoa butter. It is not present in hot cocoa and this makes it significantly lower in fat than hot chocolate. This chocolate drink was brought to the United States in the early 17th century. Today, in our ideas of mass production and making things simple, hot chocolate is made from a packet containing mostly cocoa powder, sugar and dry milk that you have to add to either hot water or milk. It is usually very sweet and topped with marshmallows or whipped cream.

While hot chocolate is generally drank for pleasure, there are also several health benefits associated with it. It contains large amounts of antioxidants and aids in digestion. There also has been evidence that it helps treat fever, liver disease, and stomach disorders.

As I mentioned above, I just do not see these after dinner/dessert drinks ordered anymore. I thought I needed to remind everyone of one of the basic winter warmers out there. Next time you are out, come warm up with us. If you think the standard hot chocolate is just as little boring, add a bit of kick to it with Amaretto or Bailey's Irish Cream. Create your own winter delight.
Congratulations!

Things to Try This Week
3 things to try

chai teaFrom Ray - Chai Tea - This is not one of those sickening sweet drinks laden with sugar and cream. This is real Chai tea. If only you could smell through an email. Several years when we started to use these fresh loose leaf teas it was really interesting to see what a real, fresh Darjeeling, or Earl Grey tea smelled and tasted like. By far the most interesting was Chai in it's true form. We also serve a Pumpkin Chai perfect for this time of year. Other varieties include Sechung Oolong, Ceylon, Rooibos, Jasmine Green, Acai Wulong, Strawberry White, of course an English Breakfast in regular and decaf. 2.50$

BLT Chop SaladFrom Jimmy - BLT in a Bowl - For those of you that have experieced this salad before, I just simply need to mention its name. The BLT Chop Salad is back on special this week. People from all over seem to flock to get this one at least one, two or three times that it is on special. This is a perfect alteration of the traditional blt sandwhich made into salad form. No messy hands as you take a bite and it falls apart. Chunks of toasted warm sourdough croutons, smoked turkey, grape tomatoes, applewood smoked bacon and green onions tossed with romain lettuce. And then to top it off is the best part of all, the applewood smoked bacon dressing. I could use this dressing just to dip bread into at any meal. This dish is probably our best selling salad we feature on special. So here is your reminder,
it is on special this week and I am not sure how long it will be on.

Tuna BurgerFrom Nikki - Tuna Burger - I am definitely not one of the biggest seafood/fish lovers, but the more things I try, the more I come to like. Tuna has always been one fish I wouldn't mind eating, and I can honestly say I haven't eaten a better tuna sandwich than the one I was introduced to here. This tuna burger consists of freshly ground sashimi grade tuna mixed with capers, red onion and cilantro. It is char-grilled and served with alfalfa sprouts, chipotle mayonnaise and tomato on a wheat roll, served medium. $9.50

Although inspired by the sounds of her father's music collection, including Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead, an adolescent Crain took even greater solace in the music of her home state, from the rootsy Americana of Woody Guthrie to the  sonic experiments of the Flaming Lips.
