Show Report
Marshall Crenshaw
By Ray

Marshall CrenshawI always like to include a show report whenever we have a new artist. As most of you know, we had Marshall Crenshaw play solo here last week. This show had sold out in less than one day. Sometimes what you expect of a person and what you get are two different things. From the moment he arrived until his departure, he could not have been a nicer person, mild mannered, and soft spoken. As far as his show, I thought you could really tell the "show tune" influence in his act. He was one of the early cast members of Beatlemania.

Of course he played all the songs from his iconic 1982 album self entitled "Marshall Crenshaw". This watershed album included rock and roll all time classics like Maryanne, Cynical Girl and Someday, Someway. When you think about it, that album (they only sold albums when this came out) is a part of rock and roll history. Anyone roughly my age will also remember how often these tunes were on in the early days of MTV. As usual, there were many local musicians in the audience. It is pretty cool when you think how many times you have heard some of the locals sing these tunes, and now they are here to hear the originator's version. Even with it being a solo show, not having the effect of his band, it was great to hear, see and feel live. He also played several songs from his new CD Jaggedland, of which I thought he could have done a much better job promoting. It is a pretty good work.

Marshall was on his way to Southwestern Michigan where his parents were going to join him and watch one of his shows.

Watch for at least 4 new shows being announced next week.

At the Front Desk
Jelly Bellies
By Jim

Jelly BellyEver since I started out as a manager, we have offered Jelly Belly jelly beans at the front desk for guests on their way out. A lot of people have fallen in love with these little sugar after dinner "thank you" treats. At the time, I inherited being the one that orders the different flavors each month. Over the course of the last 9 years, I have felt a lot of pressure being in charge of this. There used to be only a few flavors that we brought in. It always seemed to be a mint flavor or coffee type flavor. When it became my turn to choose, I felt we needed a little bit of excitement brought in. Although it is always hard to choose from all the flavors that they make, I try to bring in a few new flavors each month to sweeten the palate after your dinner. I have always had great conversation with guests as they make a pit stop at the dispenser on the way out. There has even been a few times where we have run out and I would see an unpleasant customers reaction. I had all staff pointing to me when they were questioned by guests. I vowed to never run out of them again.

But where do Jelly Bellies come from? Although jelly beans first appeared in the 1800's, jellied candies have been around for thousands of years. The first jelly bean was created by an American candy maker whose name has since been lost in time. The official Jelly Belly candy is a little different than the traditional jelly bean. Jelly Bellies tend to be softer and smaller than traditional jelly beans. They are also flavored in both the shell and the middle. Traditional beans typically contain flavor only in the shell.

In 1869, just two years after arriving in America, Gustav Goelitz bought an ice cream and candy store in Belleville, Ill., and his brother, Albert was sent out in a horse drawn wagon to sell their sweets to nearby communities. After several generations in the business, 1976 brought the birth of the Jelly Belly. The first eight Jelly Belly flavors that were born: Very Cherry, Lemon, Cream Soda, Tangerine, Green Apple, Root Beer, Grape and Licorice. Funny enough they are still some of the most popular flavors made today.

Here are a few interesting facts about them:

Ronald Reagan made Jelly Belly beans a staple in the Oval Office, on Air Force One and Marine One after he was elected president. President Reagan's passion for jelly beans inspired Blueberry flavor, which was cooked up so he could serve red, white, and blue beans at his inaugural parties.

Jelly Belly was also the first jelly bean in outer space. Free floating, weightless Jelly Belly beans were sent on the space shuttle Challenger in 1983 as a presidential surprise for the astronauts. Coincidentally it was the same mission that boasted another bit of history -- the first American female astronaut, Sally Ride.

I would love to hear everyones favorite flavor. Please email me at jimmy@uptowngrill.com

I will try and bring back more of your favorites to our selections.

Industry Controversy
Screaming Kids
by Ryan

Screaming KidThere has been a lot of discussion about this topic recently and now that I fall on both sides of the equation, it probably is not a bad time to discuss the issue. I have read so many articles and heard so many discussions about the behavior of children in restaurants recently that I thought to myself, "we don't have many problems here." But, just last week we had a shouting match in the middle of the restaurant between the parents of young children and an elderly couple that were trying to enjoy their dinner. The couple took offense to the children's behavior and the parents took offense to the couples reaction. It was uncomfortable to say the least.

Some restaurants have gone as far as putting signs on their door that say "No screaming children," or "We are not here to babysit your kids." Just read some of the attached articles and you will see the position that some restaurants across the country are taking. We are in no way even considering doing anything like this! Our customers and their children rarely even cause us to raise an eyebrow. You would be naive to believe me if I said we never have any issues. Overall, I consider ourselves lucky and our young customers are very well behaved.

If you take anything away from these articles it should be to at least consider the people around you in any public atmosphere, not just restaurants. As a parent, we/you are used to screaming kids and big time messes. But people who are not parents that go anywhere in public in an attempt to enjoy themselves do deserve the common courtesy of simple consideration. It might mean taking your child away from an area for awhile or even cutting your meal short. Everyone knows you can't always control your children, but you can control your consideration for others.

The Queen Cancels Christmas?
by Ray

QueenThe headline read "Queen cancels staff Christmas party due to economic climate" . My first thought was "what a grinch!" After more rational thoughts returned, I am realizing it is a reality. Because of societal and economic changes, Christmas parties are not the same and will probably never be the same. Most people understand where the queen is coming from and that it is the perception in bad times of throwing a lavish party. It is happening everywhere. In our case, for the first time ever we have a couple of weekend December openings in our banquet room. Parties are down and it looks like another bleak Christmas in the retail and restaurant business. All is not doom and gloom. December is usually our best month. I thought it might be a good time to review how Christmas is changing in our industry and how we can help with your holiday party and gifting options.

As a male and a business owner, I dread the annual Christmas decisions as much if not more than I do the other 3 or 4 annual occasions that require my physical and mental attention. It is not fun, but after I get things started I eventully get in the spirit

We have had a company Christmas party 24 out of 25 years. We have them after the season because we are so busy. What is important to our staff is good drinks and good music which leads to a good time. In every business, staff and customers are different. I am sure some of your customers and employees dread the Christmas party, while others love it. You can never please everyone. As a host, you also have to consider insult, injury, and liabilty. Many bad things as well as many good things can happen at a Christmas party.

I have already mentioned that our holiday parties are down. January parties are up! Many companies find it much easier to free up schedules after the holidays when things are not so hectic. It might not have the same holiday feel, but it does fit into peoples schedules better. We leave the Christmas decoration up until February in the banquet room.

We also do a very good job at more impromptu casual get togethers. Small businsses, teachers, employee groups, and friends getting together can chose private as well a semi private seating. We do not mind doing seperate checks for these events and can still serve most groups of up to 30 off the menu.

Over the last few years, some businesses have realized that gift cards can actually seem more like a gift to your employees and customers than throwing a party. While it does not have the same effect as a group event, they can be used anytime and I think you might get a little more mileage for your gift giving dollar. We have been here for 25 years. We still honor gift certificates from 1985, and your gift dollar is safe with us. No restrictions, charges or expiration. EVER!

For house parties, we serve almost everything from our banquet menu and dining room menu in larger portions on a nice looking disposable catering tray. Everything from paninis, salads, appetizers, cheese trays, to shrimp cocktail. Dont forget about our breads, dressings, and home made cookies and brownies also.

Things to Try This Week
3 things to trySeveral years ago, I was in one of the major Chicago wine stores, and I noticed a display where some of the members of their staff would recommend a certain wine for the week. Any of you who have visited one of these wine stores knows your choices can be daunting. Many of the recommended wines were a very good value from unknown wineries. I thought to myself what a great way to offer suggestions. After time, if you were a regular customer, you would come to know that you really like the type of red that "Joe" would pick and "Molly's" white wine selections were great quality also. This is what we are going to try and do in this section every week. With over 100 items on our food menu, 400 behind the bar and ever changing specials, we are asking our in house foodies, servers, winos, chefs and supervisors for their suggestions. These are not things we are trying to sell or get rid of, just things that are really good this week from the people that know our product the best. Hopefully over time by reading our newsletters, you can find one of our staff members whose taste you really trust.

Carnival CauliflowerFrom Jim - For those that are always looking for what tasty new side dish we serve each week, the sauteed carnival cauliflower with broccolini has been very eye appealing. And it tastes great too! Carnival cauliflower has the same flavor and nutritional value as regular white cauliflower, but this makes food fun. The deep purple, green and red colors make this usual boring white vegetable interesting. Just seeing it on the plate makes you think, I wonder what that tastes like. We have mixed it with broccolini, another interesting vegetable. This is a cross between regular broccoli and chinese broccoli which has the normal florets but a longer, edible stalk. We sautee these veggies in olive oil and white wine.

stuffed poblano pepper
From Nikki
- I recommend that you come in and try the Stuffed Poblano Pepper. I am a big fan of dips and salsas, and this one tastes delicious. This dish has a large poblano pepper with caribe cheese inside of it. It is served in the center of a rich, tasty chipotle salsa. Sprinkled with red and green peppers and cilantro, the whole mixture is great with our tortilla chips. It is not too hot of an appetizer, but while the air keeps getting chillier, this dish is perfect to spice up your taste buds.

coffeeFrom Ray -
This week for me it is as simple as the plain old cup of joe. I get a kick out of our UPS driver when he delivers our coffee once a month. He tells me it is his favorite day of the month because he gets to inhale our coffee fumes all day. When ever I open a bag of our House Dark Roast Blend the aroma just sends me to heaven. In the old days, it was said you can judge a restaurant by the cup of coffee they serve. Today with all the junk that is served in lieu of coffee, that might not apply. We take many steps to insure our coffee is as good as it gets by ordering direct from a small roaster, to weekly temperature and grind calibrations on our machines. We use only the purest reverse osmosis water for brewing and vacuum thermal carafes so our coffee never touches a burner. I usually hate decaf. The other day I tasted a cup of our Dark Roast Decaf, and even that was great.
