After the Earthquake, Chilean Wine by Jimmy
The country of Chile has an economy that is one of the most
dynamic oriented in the world. Chile
is also home to some of the finest wineries in the world. Behind copper,
it is the second largest industry in the country. 68% of its wine
produced is exported and in 2009 alone, 670 million liters worth $1.36
billion. They have produced great quality wines at low, affordable prices
for years. It is amazing in our different tastings how good they are
for the cost. The earthquake that hit the country in February
2010, causing over 700 deaths, also resulted in more than $30 billion in
infrastructure damage and their wine industry was hit hard. Wineries in
the southern region of the country between the Colchagua and Maule
Valley were the hardest hit. While buildings and some
vineyards sustained minor damage, it was the barrels, tanks and bottles
that were the most affected. The tanks ended up falling down onto each
other or other barrels. Power
outages, even lasting longer than a week, caused irrigation
systems to shut down. One of the grim jokes making the rounds in the wine country is that on
the day of the quake, rivers and canals ran red with spilled wine. Wines
of Chile, an industry trade group, estimates that 125 million liters of
wine were lost or 12.5% for the industry. Many of these wineries
estimate that it will take one to two years to repair everything as it
was. The earthquake struck just before harvest was to begin. That is
fortunate, because much more wine could have been destroyed. Despite the disruption caused
in the Chilean wine
country, they say the quake shouldn't affect global wine prices,
because Chile's market share isn't so large that a hiccup in its exports
will cause scarcity. Currently, they have simply cut discounting or
giving incentives but how long can they hold off, in order to recoup
some of their costs and losses? This will then affect the price of
wines all over the world. The price competition wars will now favor on
the side of the suppliers. Chile will start to raise their prices and
other wineries will now feel they will be able to get more for their
wines. That is how it goes. Any major catastrophe, although unfortunate,
seems to always affect everyone by paying the price. We will see. |

"En Plein Air" Art Show by Ryan
Claude Monet "Woman with a Parasol" | On Saturday June 26th the
Hegeler Carus Mansion
is hosting an outdoor art show and sale. The art
show
centers around a style called "En Plein Air." The event is open to the
public and there will be food and wine along with numerous art
demonstrations. You can view more information about this event at the link below. So why would an art show
be held at the Carus Mansion? Well, "En Plein Air" is a french term
which means literally, in the open air, and is used to describe the act
of outdoor painting. For someone who has lived in this area his entire
life, the first question I asked was, "what does that have to do with
LaSalle?" And the answer is simple.
Winslow Homer "Artists Sketching in the White Mountains"
 | We have
such a beautiful landscape
in our area that because we live with it every day, we don't take
advantage of it as we
probably should. With Starved
Rock State Park just a few miles away, it is exactly what an "En Plein
Air" artist
would be looking to use as its subject. With our waterfalls, cliffs and
rivers it can be an ideal location for an En Plein Air advocate.
Some of the most famous advocates of En
Plein Air painting were Claude Monet, Winslow Homer and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. An "en
plein air artist" by the name of Dana Collins will be conducting an
illustrated talk at this event. Hegler Carus Mansion

Fred Eaglesmith by Kris
It looks like one of our favorites it making the big time. Fred Eaglesmith recently appeared on the David Letterman show on June 18th promoting his new CD. "Cha Cha Cha". You can see the show on the link below.
He has also just had one of his songs recorded by country music artist Alan Jackson for the title track on his new CD "Freight Train". Jackson said "I heard it on satellite radio one day in the car. I listen to bluegrass
stuff on there a lot and it came on and I wasn't familiar with it and I
listened to it and thought it would be a good remake," he says. "I just
liked the melody and the lyrics and the way old Fred recorded it. It
was pretty cool." Congrats Fred! Eaglesmith on Letterman |

Griffin House By Crystal
Griffin House at the zoo?
Recently, I took my daughter to the Lincoln Park Zoo
in Chicago. I was really amazed at what this zoo has to
offer. Clean, great layout, closeness to the animals, childrens area, a
carousel, an awesome green house all with free admission!
What I found out
when I got there was that they have entertainment too. "Jammin' at the
zoo", as they call it, has some great summer line ups. What was most
appealing to me was our beloved Griffin House will be there on August 27th. I
wanted to share this with you since OUR Griffin (does that sound too
much like a possessive fan?) is so loved by all of you. Ticket prices for these shows are also very reasonable.

Italian BLT by Kris No it's not your everyday BLT. In an effort to move this traditional sandwich "UPtown", we've incorporated some of our favorite Italian ingredients. Applewood smoked bacon, fresh mozzarella, roasted yellow tomatoes, mesculyn greens and garlic aioli served on toasted Tribeca bread. We sold out the first day it was on. It's back again, don't hesitate on this one. |

Strawberry Moon, Summer Solstice by Kris June
26th will be the time to watch the
June full moon. It is called the Strawberry Moon. This
name was universal to
every Algonquin tribe. However, in Europe they called it the Rose Moon.
Also because the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries
comes each year during the month of June . . . so the full Moon that
occurs during that month was christened for the strawberry!June 21 was the longest day of the year. Summer solstice is
actually
only an instant in time (when the Earth's axial tilt is most inclined
towards the sun), the term is referred to as the beginning of summer.
This indicates the shortening of days and the lengthening of nights. In
the northern hemisphere, it is the longest day of the year. In the
southern hemisphere, it is the shortest day of the year. |
