Spaghetti Dinner UPdate
| Another Successful Year! By KrisA Community coming together.
Thank You....Thank You.....Thank You.....
To everyone for making our 11th year another success. We served over 1000 meals in 4 hours and raised over $11,000!
Chris Plankenhorn and daughters Anna and Abby
| First.... Thank you to all of the continued support from our volunteers. - - Uptown employees
- - Lighted Way employees
- - Friends
and Family
and everyone from the community that helped in anyway. Especially the kids, what an amazing thing it is to see kids helping kids! Jim Lannen and daughter Ava
| Second.... Thank you to everyone that made donations of any kind. Our Vendors... - Sysco Foods - Bernardi Meats - Mautino Distributing - Loffredo Produce and all of you who simply said "keep the change" or "add this to the pot" It is all greatly appreciated! When we took on this project 11 years ago, our goal was to keep our charitable efforts here at home in the community. We could not possibly do this each year without the mass of volunteers that help in preparing, serving and cleaning up. Each year we are more amazed than the last to see this come together. It fills our hearts to see a community work together for the good of the community. You should all take a bow!

Playlist Theater Show Update |
Alejandro Escovedoby Ray
After each one of our shows I think it is fun to share some of the "behind the
scenes" things from the show. Thank you so much for selling us out again
on a Wednesday night. This is part of a string of 6 sold out shows in
row. Alejandro's was probably one of our loudest, and most packed show
ever. Usually in the contracts a clause is included that the artist is
allowed to add as many as 20 people to the guest list. Never in the past
has anyone brought more than a couple of guests. Since there were some
local connections to the band the guest list was filled. Immediately
before the show Alejandro looked out at the crowd and seemed nervous. He
asked me "are we going to be to loud? We can switch to an acoustic set." I
wondered if he was worried about the demographic of our audience. I
asked
about how he thought his sound level compared to Chuck Prophet and he said much
louder. Eric the engineer made the final decision and the show went on
as planned. It was loud, bassy, and rocking. I hope not too loud.
Alejandro went out into the audience singing an A cappella
serenade just like Nicholas Tremulis did a couple of months ago.
Nicholas said before going out he stole the idea from Alejandro. Many
of you were surprised to have an opener, Megan Mc Comick and her trio.
After we had sold the show out, the agent as they often do added an
opener. I dropped the ball and never marketed the opener because we were already sold out.
Anyway she was excellent. Singer-songwriter with a great guitar and
fantastic voice. Tom, in his research for his introduction, found an
Everybody Fields connection and upon asking her she said she used to
play in the the band. What a small world! I can just imagine her voice
mixed with Sam and Jills'. She has several credits listed on
their CD's.Eric, Alejandro's engineer and road manager has
close relatives in La Moille. It sounded like the band spent most of
their time with them the last few days. Eric is also the engineer for
the famous Continental Club, my favorite venue in Austin, Texas.
Hopefully he can provide some contacts as many of my favorite artists
frequent this place. |
Around the Valley
| Sisler Ice Cream By Jimmy
Being an independent restaurant, our efforts have
always been to help promote local businesses from our local butcher,
hardware
store and florist to even our ice cream selection. We believe
these small, family owned companies offer a great product and the money
stays locally. Every day, more and more of these small independents are
being put out of business by the large chain stores moving in. One such example is on our dessert menu. We
feature Sisler's ice cream. Sisler's is an independent family owned and
operated company located 30 minutes northwest of LaSalle in the small
town
of Ohio, Illinois. Just a few years ago, it celebrated 100 years in the
ice
cream making business. Although technology has advanced
over
time, Sisler's still hand packs each flavor for the old fashioned, soft,
creamy
texture. A delivery truck makes its way to us each week, with over 40
different
flavors, ranging from the traditional vanilla to couch potato crunch.
You will
always find at least 4 of those flavors to choose from on our menu. As a
ice cream connoisseur, I must say that butter pecan is my favorite. As
always, we like to use fresh, local products whenever possible so next
time you
are in, may I suggest a fresh fried cinnamon tortilla with Sisler's
banana ice
cream, fresh banana and warm caramel sauce? |
Opening Day |
Bringing Generations Together
by RyanThis time of year is probably my most
favorite time
of year. Spring training is coming to an end and the start of a new
baseball
season is almost upon us. While Sunday signals the official opening of
the 2010
Major League Baseball season (for TV ratings), Monday is probably the
more
official opening day. It will be the first opening day I will miss in
the last
10 years. An avid White Sox fan, I have attended opening day 10
consecutive
seasons, but with some unforeseen circumstances this year, my streak
will come
to an end because of work. (unless I get sick.......cough, cough!)
What opening day does for many,
is contain so
much hope. (Just ask Cub fans.) At 0-0, everyone is equal, everyone has
just as
much chance as the next guy. Fans of every team can just picture their
favorite
players hosting the trophy in late October and nowadays, sometimes early
November.
All of this reminds me of a story my Grandpa Barto once told
me. It
was World War II, 1945 and Grandpa Barto was on his ship in the
Pacific, the USS Nashville. You might remember that the Cubs were in the
World
Series that year versus the Detroit Tigers. The Cubs lost the series 4
games to
3 games and all of my Grandpa's Naval buddies were giving him a pretty
hard time
about his Cubs going down in defeat. My Grandpa told all of them, "ah,
that's
okay guys, their just waiting for me to come home so I can see them win
it in
person!"
Well, when my Grandpa and his shipmates reunited for a 60 year
reunion in the earlier part of this decade, they all asked him why the
Cubs
were still waiting to win that World Series for him? At that point, in
his late
70's and never having witnessed a world series game of his favorite
team, he had
had enough, and succumbed to the pressures of my cousin, my uncle and
myself. He
jumped ship and joined us in celebrating the glory of the 2005 World
Series
Champion Chicago White Sox.
We shared a stogie that night, a few
baseball
stories and grins from ear to ear. That's what opening day and
baseball does, it brings together generations, it provides hope and it
recalls memories that can be passed from one generation to the next. And
oh yeah,
Cub fans.... wait till next year! |
Patio Dining
|
Yes you can! By Kris We've waited long enough! The patio is up and ready to go. With expected temps this week in the upper 70's we thought we shouldn't wait any longer. In some ways this is the perfect time to sit outside and enjoy the fresh spring air. There are no bugs yet and you won't be fighting the crowds for a seat until the 80 degree days kick in. For me, a sunny day in the 70's is perfect, even if you need a light jacket. Remember, the patio is an extension of our dining room. The same great food and service that you are used to inside is available with a beautiful spring breeze. |
Just For Fun |
Mullet Placeby RayAt the risk of offending our neighbors to the north that are customers I
got a chuckle out of this article. It is always fun to get a good dig
in with the cheesehead in your life. You would think the most stolen
street sign in Green Bay would be Lombardi Avenue, Reggie White Way or
Brett Favre Pass. The most stolen street sign is Mullet Place. It is not
named after the briefly popular helmet-style haircut of the 1980s. The
street was named in the 1820s after John Mullett, a surveyor working on
land claims. There are not that many signs because the street runs
just two city blocks. Mullet Place has disappeared so many times city
crews have moved it higher on the street pole and out of reach. It
costs about $50 to $60, including labor, for the city to replace signs.
