Uptown Rice Blend
by Jimmy
|
Once again, in our efforts to offer more distinct original products, we purchase our rice blend from a company that deals in only rice and grains in Bemidji, Minnesota. Offered as a side dish or as an accompaniment to all of our chicken entrees, is the Uptown seasoned rice blend. We have been serving the same blend for over 20 years. We chose this blend because of its unique taste and texture, including a nice crunch. This blend is made of basmati rice, bulgur wheat and acini pasta. All of which contain high nutritional value. Basmati is a long grained rice that can either be brown or white, and is most identified by its unique fragrance. It is high in fiber and builds body tissue. Bulgur wheat is a whole grain that has a light, nutty flavor. It contains more fiber, vitamins and minerals than traditional white rice. Acini pasta, also called acini de pepe, means "peppercorns" in Italian. They are very tiny-bead like pasta. It is low in saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol. Together, these 3 make the perfect blend of starch with a very distinct flavor and high nutritional value. |

Last Call for Willie Nile - Sell Out Alert
by Kris
|
We've reached the point in ticket sales for Willie Nile where we like to warn our loyal readers that we are close to being sold out. Just the idea of being able to see someone of this stature here at a local, intimate venue is truly exciting. Willie has played and recorded with the likes of Ringo Starr, Tori Amos, Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Ian Hunter, and Barenaked Ladies. He was invited to share the stage at three concerts with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, including the two final Shea Stadium shows. A live Central Park concert album, Willie Nile-Archive Alive, was released on Archive Recordings, and Nile was one of the vocalists on the ensemble album Largo, along with Joan Osborne, Cyndi Lauper, Levon Helm, The Chieftains, Taj Mahal and Carole King. Don't wait, the last few tickets will go fast. Willie VideoHouse Of A Thousand Guitars was released on April 14, 2009

We Will Be Here For You Brave Souls
by Ray | With the Midwest in the depths of an icy grip and blizzard season
being upon us, I thought it would be a good time to remind our customers that
we almost never close for snow storms. Over the last 25 years I am
extremely proud to say I can only remember 3 times we closed for
weather. I think this attitude must have come from all of my father's
Swiss mountain survival stories. It might not be a sound business practice to open
for the few people that will risk the travel and brave the deep snow, however, I have always felt a commitment to our customers to be open when ever possible. It
seems today that businesses, schools, and public facilities close at
the mere threat of bad weather. Since we opened the weather man and the
Weather Channel have become public enemy #1 to restaurant owners. It
might be smart to stay in sometimes but it really seems to me that
nowadays we use any excuse to close down and take a snow day. For many
businesses it makes no difference to their bottom line or their
customers if they show up. We have to compete everyday and we do not
get paid if we do not show up. When
a storm is approaching we do have several plans of action set up ahead
of time. The employees that live the furthest away get called off first
except Kris who calls herself off at the threat of a threat of a storm.
(Who, by the way, will not be in tomorrow due to the threat of the threat of the storm. Kris) Staff will be reduced proportionally to the storm. Sometime that means
one employee filling 3 positions. Most of my local employee's know
better than call and say they are stuck because they know I will offer
to come and get them. I think dealing with storms like this is actually
one of the fun parts of living in Illinois. What a great way to break
up the monotony of winter. The next storm, perhaps tonight, stop and see us. We will more
than likely be open, our sidewalks will be shoveled and we will have something warm waiting for you including a greeting.

Winter Activities by Kris
|

Take advantage of the expected 3-6 inches of snow this weekend. There are many winter activities around the area. One of which is Cross Country Skiing at Matthiessen State Park, located off of Route 178, 3 miles south of Starved Rock State Park. There are 6 miles of
trails that are open to cross-country skiing. The trails are free to
ski if you have your own equipment. Trail maps are available at the
park and on the park's website. Equipment rental is available at the park. Located in a log cabin just to the west of the fort. They are open Saturdays & Sundays when snow is on the ground from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. With the snow on the ground it is difficult to navigate the trails, make sure that you check the map before you begin and be sure to be back by 4 p.m. A family fun and inexpensive activity (only $7.50 for kids and $12.50 for adults for all day, or as long as your endurance allows). Call 815-664-2484 for more rental and trail info. Matthiessen State Park Cross Country Ski Trails |

Big City Costs
by Ryan
Just recently I read an article in which Ticketmaster and Live Nation have discussed a possible merger. The concert industry was trying to fight this merger because ticket prices would only continue to rise and consumers would be left with a monopoly on ticket purchasing. Right now, when you order tickets on Ticketmaster I'm sure everyone is familiar with the surcharges that are added on to your ticket price. All of this started me down a path of comparing the price of going to a show here in your hometown vs going to a show in the city.
First of all, if you order tickets here, not only are they cheaper but we're not involved with Ticketmaster so you don't have to pay the $8 plus in taxes and other surcharges. If you drive to the city, you can expect at least $10-$20 in parking fees, sometimes more.
Here, the venue holds 140 people and there's not a bad seat in the house. If you travel to the city you better arrive early or you might have a hard timing finding a spot to even see the artist.
There are the obvious price differences in liquor and food. Here a beer will cost you $3 to $5 and in the city you'll be lucky to find any beer for under $6 or $7. On top of that hefty price you get your drink in a plastic cup not a real glass as you receive here.
In the city, you are left with a decision of purchasing a hotel room or taking the long late night drive home. When all is said and done, it's nothing to drop $300 on a major show.
There are so many advantages of enjoying live music in this small town vs having to travel to a big city to enjoy it. And now, here are the two biggest ticket brokers in a discussion about a possible merger that would only create a monopoly and surely raise prices even higher. |
