Music Around the Midwest
|
Cafe Carpe by Ray |
Not too long after we starting doing our shows I had a customer come in
and ask me about the music, both that we played and that had played here. He
went on the tell me about a place in Fort Atkinson,a city of 12,000 in southeastern Wisconsin and 35
miles southeast of Madison that was very much on the same page. Upon
finding their website and checking their show list, I went to 3
different shows there last year. They have great homemade food, a
fantastic local Wisconsin beer list and music several times a week. A
venue so intimate it feels like you are sitting in someones living
room with spectacular sound. They only hold about 70 people in
their "listening room" in a variation of configurations, styles of
chairs and church pews. It takes about the same time to get there as
Chicago. Parking is free, you get waited on and you can drink out of
real glasses. All things that by now you know I like. The owner Bill Camplin
is an accomplished musician himself. Hence, his dedication to the
performances and the sound. He is very well connected in the music
business and many "Mid Majors" perform at his place when passing thru
the midwest. It also seems that he has mentored many young local
musicians including Geoffry Foucault and Peter Mulvey. Peter Mulvey's
song "The Knuckleball Suite" must be about playing, living, and
learning music at "The Carpe" All
of the performances I have seen there have been spectacular. Their
shows fill up fast. They are generally in the 10 to 15 dollar range.
They have an email list to keep you up to date Cafe Carpe |
Our Banquet Menu |
New Side Dishes, Family Style By Ryan
Another addition to our banquet menu for this holiday season are several
new side dishes to accompany all entree choices. We are offering 14 new choices
of sides and are changing the way our entree meals are served. Instead of
serving all meals with our traditional rice blend and vegetables, we will now
allow the customer to select 3 side choices from our list. All side
choices will be served in bowls to pass around the table. Each guest can pick
and choose what and how much of a side dish they would like. Banquet entree
prices will not change. The side choices will be included in the current banquet
price. The side choice selection is perfect for sit down style dinner, such as rehearsal dinners, wedding

What's New Around The Uptown |
Our logo gets a new look!
by Jimmy
|
In last weeks newsletter, Ray wrote an article about moving into the 21st century with a new point of sale
system. The change finally happened. Along the same lines of updating, we are
currently in the process of changing the look of the "Uptown Grill" logo.
We just wanted to point out to all of our readers so that when you see
it, you know it is still the same Uptown, just a new
look.
Over the course of the last 24 years, we
have had 3 logos and we are working on our 4th. The original "Uptown
Bar and Grill" logo lasted from 1985 until we moved into our current building in
1995. (sorry for the image, however, this was much earlier than the digital image era)
With a new building, has to come a new look. The term "bar and
grill" was dropped because it had become all too common.
In 2005, we even dropped the word "grill" in the logo to give
it more of that contemporary look. However, over time we have felt
that by just looking at it, how would you know it is even a restaurant. The search started for a new design. Recently, while meeting with MCS Advertising. Our
rep was playing with different looks incorporating the word "grill"
back into our logo along with the letter "U". This new contemporary look with the "polished casual" feel is
where we are headed.
P.S. Ray has been promising us that there will be a whole
"new" look for the dining room in 2010. |
UPcoming Weather

Scientific Prediction or Folklore
by Kris
|
Balmy 70 degrees in November! After what was one of the coolest summers and mildest fall on record we are approaching winter with beautiful sunny 70 degree days! All of this while hearing that the Farmers Almanac is predicting one of the coldest winters on record. So, I thought I would do a little research. So that you can be just as perplexed as I am, here are two completely contradictory predictions from what could be considered the top two weather prediction sources. Farmers' Almanac
How Cold will the Winter Weather Be?
According to the 2010 Farmers' Almanac, this winter will see more
days of shivery conditions: a winter during which temperatures will
average below normal for about three-quarters of the nation.
A
large area of numbingly cold temperatures will predominate from roughly
east of the Continental Divide to west of the Appalachians. What about snow/rain/ice? Near-normal
amounts of precipitation are expected over the eastern third of the
country, as well as over the Pacific Northwest and Northern Plains,
while drier-than-normal conditions are forecast to occur over the
Southwest and the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes. Only the Central and Southern Plains are expected to receive above-average amounts of precipitation. Farmers' Almanac NOAA..(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) National Weather Service
How Cold will the Winter Weather Be? El Nio to Help Steer U.S. Winter Weather. Warmer-than-average temperatures are favored across
much of the western and central U.S., especially in the north-central
states. Though temperatures may average
warmer than usual, periodic outbreaks of cold air are still possible. What about snow/rain/ice?Equal chances for above-, near-, or below-normal temperatures and
precipitation. Winter weather in this region is often driven not by El
Nio but by weather patterns over the northern Atlantic Ocean and
Arctic, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation. These patterns are
often more short-term, and are generally predictable only a week or so
in advance. NOAA'S National Weather ServiceAnd last but certainly not least is Mother Nature herself. Let's remember who really is in control. This is all
prediction, not Bible. There are very
intelligent people that know maps, ridges, flows and whatever
else; but it's still a scientific guess. Let's not jinx this thing by
putting our complete faith in man. It is what is is. It will be
whatever it will be. Bringing to mind the old adage "Only Mother Nature knows for sure." |
