Romi Mayes, Next Week, Wednesday November 4th by Kris |
Over
the past couple of months we have written a few articles and emails
about this show. We really don't want to sound pushy, however, we don't
want you to miss what will be one great performance. This will be one of several artists that have been recommended to us by Fred Eaglesmith. Among those are Chris Knight, Amy LaVere,Sam Baker, Bill Kirchen and David Olney. You know what great shows those all were. I am just
going to list a few quotes from the critics and let you decide if you
want to pass on the opportunity to experience this reasonably priced,
local, intimate, live and rowdy evening.... "She's got the flint and she's got the steel - everything she needs to take her anywhere she wants to go."...Gurf Morlix "Mayes is a straight shooter with heart on your sleeve lyrics, edgy innuendo, and bad ass guitar playing".... Manitoba Music.com "By the time ... is over you're left feelin' pretty damn good - and
no, it's not just the Jim Beam. Yup, you've yee-hah'ed (and you didn't
even know you knew how), you held hands with a stranger through a
ballad that sent shivers down your spine, and most importantly, you've
soiled yourself. But don't worry, you're not alone. So did everyone
else. Mayes has that effect on people."... Manitoba Music.com "With her unique mix of bourbon infused country blues, Romi Mayes will
make you miss your mouth when sippin' your beer. Her sexy, sincere
vocals break hearts, her bad-ass guitar playing breaks strings, and her
honest, edgy songwriting is putting her on the Americana map of
performers as a force to be reckoned with."... lastfm.com "This is the sort of sound you'd want to hear pouring out of roadhouses
as you drive up expecting to get drunk and maybe fall in love." Romi Mayes took home the awards for Songwriter of The Year and Album of The Year at the 2007 Canadian Music Awards. Her "Achin In Yer
Bones" CD (Released this past March in Canada, and produced
by renowned Texas producer Gurf
Morlix) just won Roots Album of The Year and Songwriter of The
Year at The 2009 Canadian Music Awards this past month
and was just
nominated for Album of The Year at The Canadian Folk Music
Awards. You really don't want to miss this show! Romi's Website |

Featured Wine, Waterbrook Melange by Jimmy |
With the temperature getting colder, consumption of red wine increases with the seasons. Currently, our featured wine by the glass is Waterbrook Melange. This Washington
state red is made from cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, syrah,
sangiovese and merlot grapes. It is a full bodied wine with aromas of
cedar, spice and dark stone fruit. Waterbrook winery is located in the Walla
Walla region of Columbia Valley. The Waterbrook name was chosen because of its
location and the phrase "Walla Walla" means "running water" in American
Indian dialect. This winery has produced numerous award winning
wines. This particular wine received 89 points in wine spectator making it the perfect choice for a chilly fall night. |
Things To Do |
Discover Olof Krans at Bishop Hill By Ray Several
weeks ago my wife and I went to explore Bishop Hill, which is about 60
miles to our west. We had read several things about it and finally had
a day to kill. I am not much for a day of antiquing but the drive was
nice and the history of this mid 1850's Swedish commune I found
fascinating. Bishop Hill is extremely well preserved and gives an
amazing insight into the lives of the early settlers of Illinois. I
would definitely recommend this as great day trip.
While
we were there we kept seeing these interesting paintings that had to be
by the same painter. We inquired as to who the paintings were by. We
found out his name was Olof Krans and there was a museum on the south
edge of town that exhibited many of his originals. I am not an art
aficionado by any stretch but I know what I like
and these painting all seemed to have the same theme, a dreary communal
feel to
them. Bishop Hill was basically a Swedish commune and his paintings
definitely reflect that. Did
we have an "American Master" living in Central Illinois a century and a half
ago? We were told that every once in a while an original might pop up
in a local attic or a basement somewhere.
Olof
Ersson was born in Sweden . When he was twelve years old his family
emigrated to the United States. The family arrived at Bishop Hill in
1850. Bishop Hill was the site of a Utopian religious community founded
in 1846 by Swedish pietist Eric Janson
and his followers. During the first two winters at the colony, Krans
attended school and as he got older he was an ox boy and later worked
in the black smith and paint shops.

When the Civil War
started, the immigrants raised an entire company and Krans was among
the volunteers. He mustered into the Union Army and he changed his last
name to Krans. His whole family subsequently adopted the new name.
After the Battle of Fort Donnelson in Tennessee he was given a
disability discharge. After the war, Krans married and relocated to
Galva Illinois.
There he became a house painter and also did interior decorating. He
painted buildings, numerous commercial signs, stage scenery and various
decorative treatments in buildings. He painted backdrops and curtains
for the local opera house. Krans also decorated the interior of
Galva's Methodist and Lutheran Churches.
In
1896 while he was recovering from a fall, he began painting
memories and people from his youth in the Bishop Hill Colony. In his
paintings, Krans documented daily life at Bishop Hill by
painting a series of pictures that described everyday life in the early
days of the colony. His work scenes show the colony's communal
workforce laboring in the fields plowing, planting and harvesting. On
the 50th anniversary of the Bishop Hill Colony, Krans donated a large
portions of his paintings to the colony. Olof Krans died in Altona
Illinois. At the time of his death he had finished more than 90
pictures that are known of. Today most of his art belongs to the collection of the Olof Krans Museum at Bishop Hill.

Moon Report |
Full Hunters Moon
by Kris
|
The Hunter's Moon will rise on November 2nd at 2:15PM The Hunter's moon is the first full moon after the Harvest Moon. It is so named because plenty of moonlight is ideal for hunters shooting migrating birds in Northern Europe. The name is also said to have been used by Native Americans as they tracked and killed their prey by autumn moonlight, stockpiling food for the winter ahead. The Old Farmer's Almanac calls it the Beaver Moon. For both the colonists and the Algonquin tribes, this was the time to
set beaver traps before the swamps froze, to ensure a supply of warm
winter furs. This full Moon was also called the Frost Moon or Snow Moon. |
