Margherita Pizza
by Ryan |
Pizza has been around forever. Originally made with white sauce, it has evolved into the pizza that cultures around the world know today. There is American pizza, sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, any possible combination that we might come up with. And there is Neapolitan pizza. The Neapolitans take pizza very seriously. In fact, they consider there to be only two true types of pizza. The "Marinara" and the "Margherita." They don't serve much more than that. The "Margherita was created by Neapolitan chef, Raffaele Esposito. Not only does the pizza represent the colors of the Italian flag but it was also created to honor the Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy. It was said that it was her favorite pizza because it doned the colors representative of her own country.
Featured on our menu this week is our version of the Margherita Pizza. Grilled flatbread lightly covered with extra virgin olive oil, roasted garlic, fresh mozzarella, garden tomatoes and fresh basil. Excellent as an appetizer to pass or enough for an entire meal. |

Wine Doggie Bags
by Jimmy
|
Many times when looking over a wine list, you may simply skim past wines by the bottle because you know you will probably not be able to finish the entire bottle. Why pay for a higher quality wine and not get your money's worth by having to leave the bottle? Within the last year, state law now allows you the pleasure of finishing your bottle of wine at home. What was once considered an open container violation, is now legal to take home, with these new wine doggie bags. We offer these sealable, tamper proof wine to go bags for any unfinished bottle of wine you order. Also, our wines by the bottle are priced less than what it would cost if you were to order 4 individual glasses. We pour 4 glasses to each bottle of wine. Now, sit back, order that bottle you always wanted to try, drink what you like and take the rest to enjoy at home. Just ask your server for a wine doggie bag.

Shroomy Groupies
by Ray |
Oh my! What have we created? It has come to our attention that a shroom lover group has formed on Facebook. We had nothing to do with this I swear! This is the first page that we know of that has been dedicated to any one of our products. To acknowledge this group we are issuing a formal challenge. If they can get their membership to surpass 100 people, we will keep shrooms on the menu. To become one of the shroomy groupies please follow the link.

Things to do in the Valley |
Other Bike Routes by Ray |
It is the time of year when bike rides become very popular. It seems in LaSalle Peru the main route taken for an afternoon family and friends bike ride is the Utica/LaSalle route on the I & M towpath. I know my group pretty much does this one all of the time and never stops to consider any others. Everyone knows the way, it is quiet, scenic and there are places to grab a beer and a sandwich on either end. Another option you should consider is the Hennepin Canal. A good route is from near Wyanet to Tiskilwa. The route is only about a half mile longer than the Utica to LaSalle route and I find it much more scenic. The path is better shape and paved about half the way. There is water flowing through all of the locks with little algae. This also happens to be the stretch where the canal climbs out of the river valley to the bluff. It seems like there is a lock almost every half mile or so. It crosses the Big Bureau Creek with a very pretty bridge and runs along side the West Bureau Creek as well as the Big Bureau most of the way. Now for the important part, in Tiskilwa there are several quaint choices to grab a beer and bite including Kelly's and the Indian Valley Inn. I suggest parking at the Lock 17 access on CR 1550E ( Lock 17). It is a couple of miles southeast of Wyanet. Friends of the Hennepin Canal

All Things Tomatoes
by Ray
I think most back yard gardeners would agree this has not been a banner year for tomatoes. Tomatoes love hot nights and plenty of water and this summer has only provided one of the two. One might want to resort to so called "Heirloom Tomatoes". We have tried these a couple times only because "if they are heirloom they have to be good". I totally agree with this article. Give me an end of summer back yard tomato anytime.! see - Washington Post ArticleWe have been purchasing home grown organic summer tomatoes from Nature's Pantry Health Foods in Streator. Nature's Pantry Health Foods. We do not refrigerate them so they keep their summer flavor and texture. Right now to get the best use of them and the season we are serving these tomatoes with our homemade fresh fresh fresh mozzerella and Flatbread Pizza Margherita |
