Amy LaVere, Friday, August 28th
There is something about this girl! We have had our eyes on her for several years since getting some great reviews from Fred Eaglesmith fans a.k.a. "fredheads". Other "fredhead" recommendations were Chris Knight, David Olney, Bill Kirchen and Sam Baker & Gurf Morlix, so I feel she is in some pretty good company. We got very lucky and just happen to find a hole in her schedule between Schuba's in Chicago and Kansas City. She plays stand up bass, writes and sings. The show will be with her band as seen in these videos. She has been on Conan O'Brien, stars on MTV's "Five Dollar Cover" and also had a roll in "I Walk the Line", the movie that depicted Johnny Cash's life story. Here is a great youtube video in which she explains some of her songs like "Killing Him Didn't Make the Love Go Away". She is on the verge of stardom. This will be a great show, I promise! - Ray "What is it about Amy LaVere?" "Killing Him"

100 Year Anniversary of Cherry Mine Disaster
By 7:00 am on November 13th, 1909 there were about 481 men and boys
in the mine shaft in Cherry. There were many threats while working in
the mines - collapse or flooding of the shaft, seepage of poisonous
gases, or fire. That day there was an electrical failure which lead to
the use of kerosene torches This was no surprise to the miners. They
were used to that. If you don't know the story, you can see where this
is headed.
259 men and boys never made it out. At least 12 rescuers lost their
lives also. There were, however, 21 men who clawed their way out after
burring themselves in mud and rock to escape the fire. The mine was
soon closed.
We now approach 100 years since this fateful day. On August 1st, Cherry will have a celebration as a dedication of lives lost.
There will be all kinds of activities which will include a balloon launch with 259 balloons in memory of those who lost their lives. On November
14 and 15th the new impressive memorial will be unveiled next to the library. There will be a trolley taking folks up to the mine site and the cemetery to see the tombstones of the miners. The
library will display artifacts and
a model of the mine. If you can't make the celebration, I would suggest a trip to the
Cherry library and cemetery....a wealth of information. I also suggest
reading Eight Days in a Burning Mine.

Women's dance of competitive non-eating. Do women really think like this?
Recently while browsing one of my many hospitality trade e-mails
I came across this article from Forbes magazine (see link below) about women's competitive non-eating.
I have been in the business for over 30 years and never did I have any idea
that something like this existed. My entire philosophy of the restaurant
business has been shaken. I have just come to realize that almost half of my
clientele really want something less, that actually appears to be even less.
Me, being the instigator that I am, I could not let this pass.
Anyone that has ever worked with me knows that I'm very quick to point out the
difference between men and women. I started to ask some of the women that work
for me if this is really true. Most of my servers that read this article said "yes,
for sure, they see it every day." I hope you'll find this as interesting and amusing as I did. - Ray

New, Perricone Juices
Perricone Juice is a family-owned and family-operated business that
runs three generations deep. They own their own groves, trucks, microbiology lab and extraction plant.
There is nothing added but fruit.
No preservatives, no fillers, no additives and most have no sugar added.
Perricone Juice is picky, picky. They hand-check twice, every piece of fruit and control every step of the
production process. It's not pulp fiction, but it is the best juice you will find. We serve Orange, Strawberry Lemonade, Grapefruit and Pomagranate. Perfect for those cool "summer sippers"- Kris
