Amazing Waterfalls of La Salle County
I am going to spend one more
week on tourism and then I promise I will get back to the business of promoting
the restaurant. In my quest to promote tourism in our area and also in
considering what makes us unique, I started to wonder has anyone ever cataloged
all of the waterfalls in our area? Like "The Bridges of Madison
County", we could have "The Waterfalls of LaSalle County". A map
and tour pointing to all of our public and private waterfalls could be of great
interest to outdoors tourists and romantics.
Almost everyone knows of
the 20 some waterfalls in Starved Rock and Matthiessen Park (see link). I don't
think many locals know how many there really are in the Illinois Valley. Just
for example the most impressive when water is flowing has to be Bailey Falls south
of Oglesby. I also know there is a beautiful one on the Cedar Creek north of
Cedar Point and on Clarks Run north of Utica. Covel Creek, Pecumsegan, Little
Vermillion, Tomahawk Creek and Spring Creeks all have waterfalls. My guess would be that the number would be somewhere near 50. When you think
of the midwest I would bet there is not a higher concentration anywhere. I
would like to start to catalog and map these. Anyone with suggestions and/or
pictures please contact me at [email protected]. Ray Pictures of La Salle County Waterfalls

Steve Forbert Tickets on Sale Friday, November 20, 2009 $15.00
Steve Forbert's style is a blend of rock 'n' roll, country, folk and R&B that gives him an unmistakably American sound. His gift for spinning a musical yarn is a bit like Mark Twain grafted with John Prine; toss in some Tom Petty and you've pretty much got the picture. He was touted to be the 'next Dylan'. A hefty handle for a young 21 year old kid from Mississippi to try to step into. What critics and reviewers learned over time however, was that he really didn't have to be the 'next Dylan' because he could hold his own in those lofty ranks without becoming anyone else but Steve Forbert. A couple of his songs were chosen for the Nicole Kidman film "Margot at the Wedding". It seems that after a career that has spanned 30 years Hollywood has discovered what some have known all along. Steve Forbert is a unique talent that's here to stay. For those of you who would like to do a little homework try his newest CD, The Place and The Time. From the first sound of the clear and ringing acoustic guitar that introduces Black Bird Tune - a wistful ode to finding beauty in 'a chimney top town' - it's evident that his listeners are in for something special. As ever, it is Forbert's deep, slow-as-molasses drawl that first invites the listener into his confidence as he continues a conversation with his fans that began over thirty years ago. For this album he was inclined back towards that era of James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, America and Seals and Crofts." and Forbert has achieved the sound he was searching for - in spades. - Kris

La Salle Farmers Market
The city of LaSalle is in its
2nd year of providing a local farmers market. Held every Tuesday from 3:00 to
6:00 pm on 2nd street, just 1 block
north of the Uptown. Local farmers and garden growers are able to provide
our area with their fruits of labor. We are able to purchase the freshest
quality products available, grown right here in our hometowns. Stop by
mid afternoon to check out our areas fresh products, then venture over to the
Uptown where you will probably find some of those fruits or
veggies used in our dishes. People are rediscovering the
benefits of buying local food. It is fresher than anything in the supermarket
and that means it is tastier and more nutritious. It is also good for our local
economy--buying directly from family farmers helps them stay in business. - Jimmy

Sangria
Summer is the perfect time of
year for cooling off with a sangria. Sangrias originated in Spain and to
put it plain and simple, it is a wine fruit punch. These summer time
cocktails are fairly easy to make. You start with any red, white
or blush wine. Mix in fresh fruit (oranges, lime, lemon, blueberry,
peach, raspberry or any other that you are in the mood for). Add a
bit of simple syrup to taste, a touch of brandy and triple sec for
some kick and refrigerate for 12- 24 hours to infuse all of the fruit
flavors into the wine. It's that easy. Stop in for one of our housemade
sangrias. Choose from Peach Sangria made with sauvignon blanc or Blueberry
Sangria made with merlot. Flavors will change often. Our patio is the
perfect place to enjoy it. - Jimmy

Portobello Mushroom Sandwich
Stop ordering the same old thing. Try one of the other 110 items on our menu. Portobello Mushroom Sandwich....Marinated in garlic, herbs and olive oil. Grilled and topped
with swiss and asiago cheeses and served over tomato and alfalfa sprouts on a wheat
roll. This is one of my favorite sandwiches on the menu. The portobello
mushroom can also be breaded and deep fried and served on a sesame seed bun.
This portobello tenderloin makes for an excellent, yet different sandwich, and it's even vegetarian. - Ryan |
