The Kickapoo Klub, 20 years ago.
It was 20 years ago on May 3, 1989 we opened our
second
restaurant called the Kickapoo Klub. The original Uptown, in the
building immediately
to our east, was as prosperous and busy as our 1600 square foot
storefront could handle. I was fresh off a summer where I had spent some time bidding on
becoming the concessionaire of the Starved Rock Lodge which was newly
renovated.
After coming in second place I was looking to do something to
capitalize on the
upcoming tourism boom in the Illinois Valley. Previously (and currently) operated as the Captains
Cove and located at the Starved Rock Marina, this
site interested me because it had one the nicest views in all of
Illinois.
It had approximately 150 seats, a banquet area, full bar and a gorgeous
patio
overlooking the "Wide Waters" and the cliffs of Starved Rock State
Park. It had a decidedly southwest atmosphere and menu.
It was operated by us for 3 years and sold mainly
because the business remained very seasonal. Every spring it was like
opening a
new restaurant and retraining staff and I did not think I could
continue to
maintain the quality of food and service I was happy with. It was sold and new
owner closed
after only 6 months. The landlords took it back over and it operates again today as The Captains Cove. - Ray |
Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks Show

I think Rita
wants to become a Lickette! The much anticipated
Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks show was last night and I thought we should share
some of the highlights. Dan played with 5 fabulous musicians Dave Bell on lead
guitar, Paul Smith on stand up bass, Richard Chan on violin and mandolin, Daria
as Lickette and Roberta Donnay as Lickette. Dan's band was tight and
fascinating to watch. They played an equal mix of songs from Dan's early days
in the 70's, his 90's stuff and his new "album" Tangled Tales. He
played 14 songs and came out for 2 encores, something I guess he does not do
often. He is in the Midwest for the next week. Click here for his schedule - Schedule for Dan Hicks
The new
album consists of an LP with a CD inside for those of you without record
players full of Dan's Tangled Tales -- Ray Link to the musicians

Alamos Torrontes
 One
of the wine trends we have seen lately is the emergence of new varietals with
wine drinkers becoming more interested in experimenting. While they might not actually
be "new" they are new to the United States market. One of these varietals
is Torrentes (pronounced toe-ron-tez). Perfect for the summer white wine
season, similar in body to a Sauvignon Blanc, this wine is light and fresh on the
palate with a crisp finish with hints of grapefruit. It goes great with
spicy, Asian and Mexican foods. Torrontes is only grown in Argentina.
coming mainly from Salta and the famous Mendoza region. This wine
according to some articles I have read may be the next Pinot Grigio in regards
to sales because of how fast it has caught on. Jimmy

Terry Evans
Ry Cooder has said that he always thought that his long time singer, Terry Evans, made a better "front man." To see him perform is to understand why. Terry is one of the most dynamic soul and blues singers performing today, writing and singing about all aspects of human emotion, and creating a connection with his audience in the process. Terry will be performing with his long time 4 piece band. Wednesday, June 3rd, 7:30 $20 general admission Doors Open at 6:30PM Check out this video with Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner and Flaco Jimenez Terry with Ry Cooder, Down the Mississippi
