Is Behaviour Based Safety Enough? yellow hardhat

There is a lot of talk these days about Behavior Based Safety, and how it relates to creating a culture of safety in the workplace. The term describes programs that use behavior modification techniques on employees to instill and encourage safe behavior on the job. Such techniques aim to prevent workplace accidents by having people at all levels of an organization make safety in the workplace a top priority.

Under Behavior Based Safety, safety supervisors are heavily trained in safety procedures, and then observe their fellow workers to monitor, report, and correct unsafe behavior. Such programs have reduced accidents in companies that have implemented them, but the programs also have...Click Here For The Full Story

BACKHOE SAFETY
Safety Tips to Remember

tractor loader backhoeOne of the most common pieces of construction equipment found today is the backhoe. Given the backhoe's versatility and maneuverability, this makes a lot of sense. But as popular as they are, workers have been seriously injured and killed working around these machines, mostly because they were not using proper precautions.

The key to effective backhoe safety, of course, is training. Backhoe operators should be specially trained to operate them, but other employees ... Click Here For The Full Story

Work Safe Alberta Announces its 2009 Student Video Contest Winners

CameramanIn a reminder that workers and employers both have a responsibility regarding safety, the Workers' Compensation Appeal Tribunal (WCAT) in British Columbia has ruled that an administrative penalty should be reduced by 20%, after it was determined that a worker's actions partially contributed to the accident in which he was injured.

The decision alters a WorkSafeBC order from November, 2007 that imposed a $29,500 administrative penalty against the employer in question. The ordered reduction will reduce the penalty to about $23,500.

The accident in question occurred on September 8, 2006, when a worker's arm...Click Here For The Complete Article

DOES MANAGEMENT STYLE MAKE ACCIDENTS HAPPEN?

Management StyleEvery year, thousands of people are injured or die as a result of workplace accidents. This not only creates tragedy and hardship for many families, but it also represents a major hit to a company's bottom line, as well. Most experts agree that nearly all accidents are the result of human error, and are preventable. So, if they're so expensive and preventable, why do so many accidents still happen? What is it about people in a workplace scenario that causes accidents?
