SAFETY SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE!!

As we mentioned last month, construction season is in full swing!  Safety should be the number one priority on every worksite, however just last week, our staff witnessed a workplace accident at a local construction site (see picture below).

When loading equipment on a flatbed, you should follow these suggestions
  1. Always make sure the operator is qualified to operate equipment
  2. Ensure the flatbed is parked on level terrain 
  3. Secure the ramps to the truck
  4. Keep the area clearforklift tipover
  5. Always use a signal person

With Proper Training, and Safety Precautions, This Accident Could Have Been Avoided!
ONE-CALL CENTRE BEST PRACTICES
Don't Forget To Call

It's an easy phone call that can save your life! The one-call centre has a documented, pro-active public awareness, education, and damage prevention program. Simply contact the one-call centre to request locates prior to excavating and you will be provided with the ticket number and the names of facility owners/operators who will be notified for each locate request. All buried facility owners are members of the one-call centre and register the location of their notification areas with the one-call centre. The centre is the interface between the digging community and registered owners of buried facilities for the purpose of updating the status of locate completions by members.

craneBurlington Steel Products Manufacturer Fined After Worker Injured

A Burlington manufacturer of steel grating pleaded guilty and has been fined $65,000  in the Ontario Court of Justice in connection with the injury of a worker in 2006.  On September 29, 2006, an employee was using a remote control device to manipulate a crane, lifting steel grates off a pile and moving them into separate bundles for shipping. We understand that most snowplow operators will load their own truck at one point, therefore we created a course to meet this training requirement!
 
The program begins with a one day (approx. 7 hours) classroom course covering topics required to begin an effective and safe winter maintenance program.On day 2 each operator will then receive 2 hours of one-on-one 'seat-time' for snowplow, and 2 hours of one-on-one 'seat-time' for front end loader.

Amendment to the Criminal Code of Canada

The amendment to the criminal code of Canada states "Everyone who undertakes , or has the authority, to direct how anothercriminal code person does work or performs a task is under legal duty to take reasonable steps to prevent bodily harm to that person, or any other person, arising from that work or task."
