What Happens in Vegas Comes Back to Canada...
WBENC Women in Business Conference 2011
By Marcela Mandeville
COO, Aberta Women Entrepreneurs
www.awebusiness.com

The first thing that strikes you when walking into WBENC's conference for women business owners, the largest of its kind in North America, is the exciting buzz of connections - amazing! There are endless opportunities for Canadian companies through WBENC, the American diversity supply chain program equivalent to WEConnect Canada that helps established women-owned businesses access corporate and government contracts locally and internationally.

At WBENC, every type of business is represented and every conversation is valuable. I was thrilled to represent Western Canada on trade mission organizing committee for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT)'s mission to WBENC and to see many of our delegates come home with deals or potential deals.

To kick off the mission, DFAIT provided a briefing day filled with networking and information for the impressive 100-person Canadian delegation. Two conference days and a business fair featuring hundreds of buyers later, WEConnect-certified Canadian business owners from west to east coast went home with many fantastic contacts and newly opened doors, including face to face meetings with MGM Resorts and Cirque de Soleil. Alberta based WEConnect Certified entrepreneur Jodee Prouse of Happy Hippo Bath Co. returned from WBENC with new business prospects in her future. "We were able to personally introduce ourselves and give out samples to multiple large corporations," explains Jodee. "They loved our products and we are already in major negotiations since the event". CFO and co-founder of Leduc based AOG International Christina Forth-Matthews, another WEConnect Certified entrepreneur, was also a member of the Canadian delegation. "WBENC was very inspirational. The large corporations that you meet are very supportive and encouraging," says Christina.

Hear more of Jodee Prouse's contract success story in Calgary and Christina Forth-Matthews' story of going global in Edmonton at our September "Leveraging Links" events.

Interested in business to business supply chain opportunities?

Mark your calendars for WBENC's next conference from June 19-21, 2012 in Orlando, Florida and WEConnect Canada's annual conference in Toronto on November 7 and 8, 2011.

Online Marketing: Improved Bottom Line or Waste of Time?
By: Ted Kouri

Principal, Incite Solutions
www.incitemarketing.ca

This past May I spoke at the AWE Conference in Calgary. The question posed to me was if websites, blogs, twitter and other social media can help grow a business or are they just a waste of time? My answer was...it depends.

Normally I hate fence sitters, but in this case I think it is the right answer. Online marketing can help grow a business, but only if three conditions are met.

1. Will your online marketing align with your business model and other marketing efforts?

There's no doubt social media is a hot topic, but that isn't a good reason to start using it. It needs to support your strategy. If you are a locally focused, customer intimate business, then a major push to maximize hits to your site is misguided. Likewise, an edgy or humorous tone to social media would hurt an otherwise serious and reserved brand...don't write for the medium, stay true to your brand.

Social media can be a powerful force, but you need to be sure not to let its popularity take you away from your core business model. In addition, make sure your online efforts align with your offline efforts. There is nothing that turns customers off faster than a blog or twitter feed with one image only to meet a sales rep with an entirely different one.
