Boost your Business in 2010
Smart business people know that you don't boost market share in boom times...your market share grows when the economy is soft and customers become more selective. The fastest, most cost-effective way to differentiate yourself is to focus on your service. Customer service can no longer be merely average or simply friendly; it needs to be remark-able. Here's your opportunity to make that happen for your team...

Are successful female entrepreneurs really different than male entrepreneurs?

A recent study released by the Kauffman Foundation provides some insights about the differences, in addition to some interesting findings about the similarities.

For this report, 549 successful entrepreneurs from the technology sector were studied, 59% of whom had started 2 or more companies.  The male and female entrepreneurs were well matched for the purpose of the comparison as they competed in similar industries; although the sample size for female entrepreneurs was significantly smaller (less than 10% of respondents were female) reflecting the lower participation of females in business ownership in these sectors. WIN 2009 title
Thank you to all who attended, sponsored, and planned the 2010 Women in the North Conference on April 29th at the Misery Mountain Chalet in Peace River, AB.  A special thanks to the Community Futures Peace Region team, especially Joanne Trudeau, for hosting the event.

AWE was proud to be a sponsor of this successful event that welcomed over 80 women from across Northern Alberta. Attendees had the opportunity to receive valuable advice from a panel of service providers as well as gain more specific knowledge from industry experts on a variety of topics including marketing, website design, search engine optimization, and organizational development.

The AWE Programs and External Relations team had the opportunity to attend and took away some key points from the event:
  • Lina Heath, President of Eveline Charles Salon, Spas & Beauty MD stressed the importance of creating priority checklists of responsibilities that must be accomplished. If you find that you aren't completing your checklist items, you will then have to look at how to improve your time management. To watch a video featuring more tips from Lina, click here.
  • Nicole Baker, President of digital-blues.com gave the 4 C's of website failure: Culture, Customers, Cost, and Complexity.
  • Holly Sorgen, Executive Director of Community Futures Grande Prairie & Region led a success visualization exercise prompting attendees to ask themselves: Where am I now? Where am I going? Where do I want to be? How am I going to get there?
If you were at the event, we would love to hear what top 3 things you took away.  More information on next year's Women in the North Conference will be available on the AWE website.
Did You Know...

...women owned businesses could be leading the economic recovery in their provinces and nationally? According to a recent Ernst & Young report Scaling Up: Why Women-Owned Businesses Can Recharge the Global Economy suggests that women entrepreneurs will play a critical role in accelerating economic recovery. Since the early 1990's the number of self-employed women in Canada has accelerated by 50% to about 800,000 currently. And according to a CIBC World Markets Inc. report, the number of women-owned businesses is growing 60% faster than those run by men.

One of the keys to this recovery will be to assist established women business owners who wish to expand their competitiveness, productivity and overall profitability.
