Networking: A Great Investment
Have you ever wondered if networking is worth the effort? Well wonder no longer. A recent study found that women who obtained their current job through a referral earned significantly more money (in some cases up to nearly 70 per cent more) than someone who had no previous association with that employer. And women benefited more from social network development in terms of their extra earning potential than men did.
So what does this mean to you and your business?
It may seem impossible as you look across your desk at everything you need to do, but you need to carve out time in your calendar to continuously develop your network. This investment of time is the best one you can make for your business and professional future. After all, you do deserve to make more money don't you?

Ask A Business Advisor
By Christi Millar
QUESTION: I have a business plan, what financing options are available to me?
Completing your business plan is half the battle. You now have an accurate idea of the cost to start your business - your own personal investment - and the amount of financing that you require. There are a number of options for you when you are looking to finance your business. Some are more common than others, but all are worth considering. You may use one or a combination of resources to finance your business.
Angel Investors Angel investors are typically successful business leaders or professionals who make significant investments of either dollars or expertise in other companies, usually early-stage startups. Angels often take a hands-on advisory or consulting role in the company and can be invaluable resources for startups. They often invest in businesses within their particular area of experience and expertise.
Banks & Credit Unions Most banks or credit unions will lend to businesses. They consider the viability of the business plan, the credit history of the entrepreneur, the owner's investment, and the projected profitability. Remember to compare interest rates and administration fees charged by different financial institutions.

AWE Sponsors Acclaimed TEC Edmonton VenturePrize
Alberta Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) recognizes how critical it is to sponsor events that support aspiring entrepreneurs and is doing something about it. AWE is contributing to the success of TEC Edmonton's VenturePrize by lending its resources to coordinate the provincial mentorship aspect of this intense business competition and effective learning tool.
"Sponsorship can be more than just financial support," said Tracey Scarlett, CEO of Alberta Women Entrepreneurs. "Sometimes offering resources is just as important." TEC VenturePrize is one of its kind in Canada. The program was originally developed by Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) based on a model created from business competitions held at institutes such as MIT, says the program coordinator for TEC VenturePrize, Kendel Ferrier.
"We decided to volunteer our resources to the mentorship program because we see this program as an integral tool for anyone who wants to start a business and it fits nicely with our mandate to help women realize success in entrepreneurship," said Scarlett.
