Plan to Make Money, Preferably Doing Something you Love

I am continually asked, "What would be a good business to start?"  The cliché answer is of course, "Do something you love to do and the money will come." But I say, "Plan to make money, preferably doing something you love." It is a subtle, but important difference.

It is true that in the early years, as you are building your business, you will have to make personal sacrifices for the benefit of your business.  But often, I see entrepreneurs sacrificing too much of their personal credit and financial security because they have blinders on and just know they are investing in a sure thing because they believe in the company (after all, it's 'their baby').  These entrepreneurs may have so much personally invested that it seems impossible to change directions.

Buying an Established Business
By Sheila Shand

It's been estimated in the next five years more than one-third of small to medium-sized businesses in Canada will be available for sale. What an opportunity! However, as with all things in life, there are advantages and disadvantages associated with purchasing an existing business.

For instance, a perceived advantage might be that the business has a very strong history and a proven track-record of profitability. But on the other hand, a disadvantage may be that the business has a poor image, or the inherited management is less than ideal. In any case, as an entrepreneur and prospective business owner, you should take the time to evaluate the current value of the business and its future prospects. After all, it's been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

For a company that creates and sells a product designed for new parents, what better justification for that product than an award from the authority on child's play itself, an affiliate of the Walt Disney Company?
