How do you measure success? In business, some people measure it based to their income. But is that really an accurate measure? If your job provides a big salary but you don't enjoy what you do, would you call yourself successful?
There's also the problem of relativity. What might represent financial abundance to you would represent poverty to someone like Donald Trump. Your concept of being physically fit is probably not the same as that of an Olympic athlete. Swimming a quarter of a mile might represent your new personal best, but to someone training to swim the English Channel it doesn't mean that much.
Is it wrong for us as Christians to ask God to help us to succeed in everything we do? Is succeeding in everything we do even possible?
If you read Genesis 39:2 you'll see that it says that "The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did." If you look at the back story you'll see that Joseph had been sold into slavery by his brothers and was a servant in the house of Potiphar. It's hard to reconcile those circumstances with what we think of then we think of succeeding.
In Genesis 39:23 it tells us again that "The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed." Once again, that sounds great until you realize that Joseph had been falsely accused of rape and was serving time in prison for a crime he didn't commit.
Maybe before we ask God to help us to succeed, we need to ask Him to teach us what it means to succeed in His eyes.
This weekend as we continue our "God at Work" series we're examining the question, "How do you spell Success?"
Embracing the journey,
Pastor Rick
