WATCH WHAT YOU WANT

coveting This weekend we're wrapping up our look at the Ten Commandments by examining the last one on the list:

You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.  Exodus 20:17

Some folks refer to this as the forgotten commandment because when you survey people and ask them how many of the ten they can name, inevitably they will forget all about this one.

Because it comes last on the list it's easy to mistakenly assume that this one is the least important of the ten.

I believe that the opposite is true, and that you can make a strong case that this commandment is the most important because when we break this commandment we're in danger of breaking all the rest.  For instance, why do people steal?  Often it's because they want something that someone else has and, if they can't afford to purchase it, they'll take it.
Why do people commit adultery? It's because they see someone and want to have them even though that person may be in a relationship with someone else. Even the first murder recorded in the Bible took place after Cain coveted Abel's relationship with God.

Whether or not the tenth commandment is the most important, it may be the most difficult to keep or to even to know when you're breaking it.  Whereas the other nine talk about our actions, this one deals with our attitude.

I hope you can join us this weekend as we conclude our series "Law & Order: Original Intent."

Embracing the journey,
Pastor Rick
