"HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER..."
Many people have problems with this fifth commandment. First of all, it sounds as though it's meant mostly for children. Second, it seems to describe a family situation that many of us never experienced.
How do you obey this Commandment if you come from a broken home? If your parents abused you? If you and your parents don't get along? If you don't even know who your parents are? If your parents are dead?
These are hard questions that reflect very real concerns and personal pain. On one level the Fifth Commandment appears to apply mostly to families that resemble Father Knows Best. It just doesn't seem to fit the dysfunctional families of our day.
Yet we know this commandment hasn't been repealed, and since it comes from God there must be a way to obey it, even if obedience doesn't come easy. Also, because God always has our best interests at heart, obedience must be something that will benefit us.
Join us this weekend as we continue our series "Law and Order: Original Intent" and look at the message "But You Don't Know My Parents."
Embracing the journey,
Pastor Rick
