PART OF THE TEAM
Forty years ago, the Miami Dolphins had an unforgettable and unparalleled season. Their record was 14-0 during the regular season, followed by a 3-0 run through the playoffs, culminating with a Super Bowl victory. No other team has matched that perfect record. Every year, thirty-some odd teams try, but for four decades, this record stands alone. Sports enthusiasts all have their own opinion about who might be the "Greatest Team of All Time," but one of the 1972 Dolphin team members put it best: "Perfection has a way of shutting people's mouths."
The opposing coach going into the '72 Super Bowl was asked to comment on the Miami defense. He replied by saying "I can't recall any of their names, but they are a matter of great concern to us." That coach's answer shouldn't surprise anyone. The nickname of the '72 Dolphins Defense was the "No-Name Defense."
What made that team special was not a handful of superstars, but the willingness of every player to execute his position with excellence for a common purpose. Something special happens when everybody plays their position. The whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
This weekend, as we conclude our "Get in the Game" series, we're going to examine the question, "What's My Position?" I hope you can join us Saturday evening at 5:30 or Sunday morning at 9 or 11AM.
