Countdown to Carmageddon
We've been warned about it for months and this weekend it arrives. A 10-mile stretch of the nation's busiest highway, Interstate 405, will be shut down for 53 hours as part of a $1 billion reconstruction project.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, other officials - and even Erik Estrada, who as motorcycle cop "Ponch" patrolled the freeway on the TV show CHiPS in the late 1970s and early '80s - have been going on local broadcasts to warn that ensuing backups could be super-size, disrupting traffic all the way to Kern and San Bernardino Counties to the north and east, and perhaps even southward as far as San Diego County.
The warnings are out that, even if we do somehow manage to survive this weekend's event, a sequel is planned for a year from now when the other side of the Mulhollland bridge is scheduled to be demolished. As I was watching the steady stream of alerts about Carmageddon, I thought about how different this is than most of the crises we face. Most of the time life's calamities don't give us advance warning to let us know they are coming. Instead they blindside us and catch us completely off-guard. We're not usually given opportunity in advance to plan alternate routes to make sure that we don't wind up stuck in the mess. When catastrophe strikes and you can't find the answer by dialing 5-1-1 or checking the nearest freeway message sign, where do you turn for help? This weekend, as we continue our examination of the names of God, we'll look at "Jehovah Sabaoth: The Lord of Hosts." We'll see how God comes to the rescue when we need help and provides us with exactly what we need to weather life's storms.
I hope you can join us Saturday evening at 5:30PM or Sunday morning at 9AM or 11AM.
Embracing the journey,
Pastor Rick
