BAKKEN BUSINESS

While it’s difficult to say exactly how long the Bakken oil boom will last, it’s likely to be at least ten to fifteen years before production decreases meaningfully. While the USGS estimated in 2007 that the Bakken formation contained up to 4.3 billion barrels of recoverable oil, industry estimates are as high as 24 billion. While that’s a huge disparity, the USGS is taking the higher potential seriously enough to re-assess the formation after only four years, which is highly unusual.

Recent increases in production have doubled North Dakota’s oil output in the last two years to over 500,000 barrels per day in February. Estimates of future production indicate that it will probably peak at between one and 1.5 million barrels per day some time in the next few years.
