SHEF College and Career Center
New HELPING YOUR STUDENT APPLY TO COLLEGE
Wednesday, October 10th at 9:30am in the Community Room
This discussion for parents of seniors will include helping students who are still unsure of which schools they are applying to, or are still confused or uneasy about their applications. We will also discuss where to begin for the "late-bloomer" that has not yet begun the process.
New COLLEGE FAIR
Thursday, October 11th at 7:00pm in the new gym at Ridge High School
A college fair will be held at Ridge High School, in the new gym. This is a great opportunity for students that are in the beginning stages of looking at colleges. Representatives are available to answer questions and provide materials.
New PLANNING YOUR TESTING CALENDAR
Tuesday, October 16th at 6:30pm in the Community Room.
This workshop will discuss the various types of college admissions testing, when the tests are offered, the best times to take them, and answer any other questions you may have. Parents of 10th and 11th grade students are encouraged to attend.
New FINANCIAL AID DISCUSSION
Tuesday, October 30th at 6:30pm in the Community Room
This discussion will include a general overview of the financial aid process. There will also be an essential financial aid night on December 10th with a guest speaker. Parents of all grade levels are welcome to attend this discussion.

New NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND AND HIGHLY QUALIFIED TEACHERS
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act, also referred to as No Child Left Behind, is a critical piece of education law. The law requires that all schools receiving federal funds inform parents of their right to ask schools about the qualifications of their child's teachers. We are proud of the fact that all teachers in The Somerset Hills School District are highly qualified in the content area that they teach. Click here to access a letter that contains more details.
New GREEN TEAM'S GREEN EVENTS OF THE MONTH (GEMs)
New this year, the Green Team will sponsor and run various events each month. Through these events we hope to raise awareness and to make BHS and the surrounding community more environmentally friendly. Click here to view the October "GEMs" (Green Events of the Month).
New BHS SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS AND SENIORS
Any sophomore, junior, or senior interested in being part of the BHS delegation to the Harvard Model Congress (February 21-24, 2013) should attend the HMC informational meeting on Tuesday, October 2nd after school in room B204 or see Dr. Hogge for an application. Click here for more information.
New SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY
The Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA) will hold its annual Old Fashioned Country Fair on October 14, 2012 from 11:30 - 4:30 pm. It is a fun filled day with games, hay rides, sheep herding, auction, artisans, farm animals, face painting, music, bee keeping, scarecrow making and pumpkin painting! Country Fair is a great opportunity for students and community groups to earn community service hours. Volunteers age 13 and up are welcome! Adults are needed too! Click here for more information.

WIN A 2012 JEEP WRANGLER!!!
Each year our athletic booster clubs collectively raise over $250,000 to subsidize athletics at BHS. In an effort to raise funds to support all of the athletic teams, the Mountaineer Booster Club is sponsoring a Car Raffle with the drawing to be held at the Homecoming football game vs. Roselle Park on Friday, October 12th at half time. The lucky winner will receive a 2012 Jeep Wrangler valued at $28,000! The Mountaineer Booster Club invites you to participate and has sent a booklet of three tickets to each athlete. Raffle tickets are $50 each. Return your sold ticket stubs and any unsold tickets and checks made payable to the "Mountaineer Booster Club" by Monday, October 1st in the black car raffle box located in the Main Office. ADDING STUDENTS TO POWERSCHOOL OR SCHOOLFUSION ACCOUNTS
Information for creating new PowerSchool (Grades and Attendance) and SchoolFusion (Website) accounts was sent to the homes of all new students in the first week of school. If you have an existing PowerSchool Single Sign-On account or a SchoolFusion account, you can add students to that account rather than creating a new one. HOMECOMING DANCE
The Homecoming Dance is Saturday, October 13 from 8 PM to 11 PM in the cafeteria. The theme is "White Out". Tickets are $15 at the door and if you wear white it is $10.
The BHS ice hockey team is very excited to formally announce their second fundraiser for the upcoming hockey season. The 2012 SHIHA Golf Outing will take place at Fox Hollow Golf Club in Branchburg, NJ on Friday, October 5th starting with a 1:00 PM Shotgun and Dinner/Auction to follow. SHIHA already has some excellent sponsor/player participation and items donated by the NHL, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers and Washington Capitals. SCHEDULING PROCESS FAQ
As the school year begins, many students and parents have questions about how to change schedules. Please click here to access the Program of Studies. Answers to frequently asked questions regarding schedules can be found on pages 8 & 9.
ATTENTION SENIORS: COMMON APP AND NAVIANCE
Please make sure that you create a Common Application account - Mr. Smith sent information to all seniors in early August; if you didn't get that email, please check your Naviance account and provide the correct email address, if applicable. After you create the Common App account, you can then link that account with your Naviance account so that you can request transcripts - there is no more black book! On the Guidance web page, there is a presentation available (TRANSCRIPT REQUEST GUIDE, under the "College/Application Materials" folder)) to walk you through the process of combining your accounts. ATTENTION JUNIORS AND SENIORS: COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVE VISITS
Please visit your Naviance account to view the list of schools visiting BHS over the first few weeks of the school year. If you are interested in attending a meeting with a college representative, then you must register through your Naviance account at least a day in advance. You also must inform your teacher in advance that you will be missing class, and you are responsible for all work.
Deadline Next Week ATTENTION SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: PSATS ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17
Bernards High School will offer the PSATs on Wednesday, October 17. The PSAT is practice for the SAT; for juniors, it also serves as the National Merit Scholarship qualifying exam. All juniors should take the Exam, and all sophomores are encouraged to test as well. The cost is $25 per student, and that money (along with registration slip) must be submitted to either Ms. Acuff or Mrs. Harknett in Guidance by Friday, October 5. The printable registration form is located on the Guidance web page. Please note that calculators are not required, but are allowed; we will NOT provide calculators.

HSA (Home and School Association) News
New WATER DONATIONS NEEDED FOR BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT OCTOBER 4, 2012
Parents of sophomores (BHS Class of 2015) are asked to donate cases of water to be served at the Back to School Night Parent Reception in the BHS Community Room sponsored by the HSA. Please drop off your donation to the Main Office by 3 o'clock on Thursday, October 4. Many thanks in advance for supporting the sophomore hospitality effort for Back to School Night. HSA MEMBERSHIP AND STUDENT DIRECTORY
The Home & School Association invites your family to join them for the 2012-2013 school year. Come help them support ALL BHS students. The HSA needs you to get involved by joining, attending meetings and volunteering to help with the HSA's many activities. The HSA is fully funded by your dues of $15.00, and their activities need parents year round to make them successful.
