Hello,

NJASK testing went well this week for the 7th and 8th graders.  Next week our 5th and 6th graders will take the NJASK and the 7th and 8th graders will complete makeup tests.  Please have students arrive well rested and on time for school (7:45 AM) each day.  Testing will begin promptly at 8:00 AM.

Many thanks to our HSA for providing ice cream to the students at the completion of testing!

Enjoy your weekend,
Lynn Sharp

P.S. Today, tomorrow and perhaps Monday, traffic on Old Fort Road will be reduced to one lane as contractors do work preparing for the installation of sidewalks.  This is a heavily trafficked area going to and from Bedwell and the Middle School, so please use extreme caution while on that road, or perhaps try to avoid it altogether.  When the sidewalk installation begins, traffic will still be allowed but again only one lane.  Please inform your children who walk on that road to be extra cautious.

BMS Community Service Hours are due on Friday, May 18, 2012.  Students are required to complete 5 hours of service time each year.  If you would like to check if your student has completed his/her hours, please log onto Powerschool.  Scroll down to Service Learning, Q4.  If there is an "S-O", your child has satisfied his/her hours, and you will see them noted.  If you do not see an "S-O", your child still needs to complete additional hours.  The social studies teachers have updated copies of hour records, or you may contact Ms. Both, the Service Learning Coordinator at kboth@shsd.org.  Please note:  Hours are submitted on a rolling basis, so once certificates are processed, Powerschool will reflect the changes.  For a copy of the service certificate, please click here.

The Bernardsville Middle School Seventh Grade Destination ImagiNation team won second place at the NJDI State Finals and have been invited to attend DI Globals in May.  This is a very prestigious award, and the team is very pleased with their efforts, win and invitation.  The team, named Paws with a Cause, chose to do project OUTREACH as their challenge.  They helped raise money for St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center.  They collected donations from four towns, hosted an event where pets get their picture taken with Santa, and they held a bake sale at Shop Rite. They raised over $2000 for St. Hubert's!  Great job, DI Team and good luck in the Globals!

Guidance Corner: Race to Nowhere presented by Atlantic Health.  This program addresses the results of pressure on adolescents in our achievement-based culture.  The Department of Psychiatry and Atlantic Behavioral Health are pleased to present the acclaimed film "Race to Nowhere" Thursday, May 10, 2012 from 6 to 9PM at the Morristown Medical Center, Malcolm Forbes Amphitheater.  You can register for this free event by calling 1-800-247-9580 or go to racetonowhere.com then click on Find a Screening tab in the upper right hand corner.

Miss Representation, sponsored by the Municipal Alliance of the Chathams, is a ninety minute documentary and panel discussion, to be held at the Chatham Middle School on Tuesday, May 15th at 7PM.  The documentary demonstrates how media affects girlls' self image and what parents can do about it.

Health News:
If your child exhibits symptoms such as sore throat, headache, body aches, stuffy nose and/or cough associated with a fever this may be influenza.  It is important to keep your child home from school if they are ill.  Students should be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school without using fever-reducing drugs such as tylenol or advil.
Remember  - Hand washing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of germs and disease.  Please promote the practice of frequent hand washing in your family and remind your children to cover their coughs and sneezes with a tissue or use their elbow, arm or sleeve instead of their hand when a tissue is unavailable.  Thank you!
