Board Games for Dogs...Really??

We're not talking Monopoly, Scrabble or Trivial Pursuit (unless you have a Border Collie :-)). There are many Puzzles and Interactive Toys that can stimulate your dogs mind and body and give them some relief from the boring indoor hot summer days.  Here's a video of Oscar the Chihuahua working a couple of puzzle games;

You can find these games on line at or at some of your local Pet Supply shops.

The "Find It" game

This is a game that we play with our high energy dogs to stimulate their minds and to wear them out. You'd be surprised how exhausted your dog can get just by using their brain and their nose. Here's how it works;

Start by placing your dog in a sit or preferably a down position. Have a favorite toy (if your dog is not toy motivated you can use food), while holding the toy, back up a few feet from her and slowly place the toy on the ground in full sight for her. Walk back to her, then with a very excited tone say "find it". When she runs and grabs the toy, get crazy with praise for her genius and play for a little bit. The second time, move the toy a little further away and as she's holding her position, walk back as before and say "find it"and repeat your celebration. Slowly move the toy back further and then, as she's watching, obviously place the toy just behind a piece of furniture. Go back to her and ..."FIND IT"! As her skill level gets better, increase the level of difficulty. One of our shepherds was so good that we could put her in a down in our bedroom with the door closed and walk all the way to the other end of our house and out the back door and hide the toy in a tree and she would find it. Two or three of those searches and she would be exhausted.
