This newsletter DO Staff Spotlight is...

Mary Moody
Student Services

Mary Moody

Mary grew up in Richfield, MN, one of four children.  Mary's career including working at her grandfather's vegetable stand, being a bookeeper for a local grocery store, and working at Shakey's pizza (yes, the rumor is true that one of her many duties at Shakey's was being the birthday clown.)

Mary has been blessed with 5 wonderful children who all attended and graduated from Lakeville Public Schools.  After 17 years of being an at-home mom and OUT of the WORKING world (any parent will appreciate the irony of that statement), Mary's volunteering with her church and her children's schools led to a clerical position with the Lakeville District in 1998.

Mary has recently accepted the newly created position entitled, Student Services Administrative Assistant with Lakeville Area Public Schools which has caused her to look forward to some new responsibilities and challenges, while broadening some of the duties that she had already been doing.  Mary feels that this new position will also provide her the opportunity to have some more direct interaction with and service to the families of Lakeville Public Schools.  She states, "I truly feel at home serving in this aspect and can utilize the foundational principles that have always been important to me and I can do all this without the clown makeup and outfit!  Life has taught me ALOT!"

-A special thanks to Mary who provided this wonderful write-up about herself.  Be sure to stop by and say hi to Mary when you're at the D.O

RtI Intervention Specialist

Welcome back staff!  My name is Sandy Giorgi and I am very excited to be joining the Teaching and Learning Team as the Elementary Response to Intervention (RtI) Specialist.  My background includes experience as a Lead Title I Teacher, Classroom Teacher, Learning Specialist, and Gifted Education Specialist.

In my role as the Elementary RtI Specialist, I will be collaborating with each elementary building and developing an RtI framework that will address the needs of students in grades K-3 with the principal and building leadership that is customized to each site.  In addition, I will be working side-by-side with teachers to support implementation of high-quality instructional strategies for our struggling learners, as well as providing professional development opportunities. You will find that I am passionate and committed to personalized instruction for all of our students.

I feel extremely fortunate and blessed to be working with such amazingly talented colleagues.  I look forward to our learning journey!

Sandy

Program Evaluation and Accountability
Jason Molesky

The Program Evaluation and Accountability Department  has been hard at work collecting and analyzing district data this summer. MCA, AYP, and Parent/Student/Staff stakeholder survey results are being compiled for each school and program to help us identify strengths and opportunities for improvement. We are fortunate to have a high-performing school system...our goal is to become even better! On August 16 and 17, the Leadership Team reviewed a framework for continuous improvement and explored how to use data to establish a baseline and set performance goals for the year.  This team will continue to explore and develop the continuous improvement process throughout the year.

As noted in the past few weeks, Lakeville Area Public Schools posted significant gains in math performance and maintained  a high level of proficiency in reading on the 2012 MCA-II/III accountability assessments.  In comparison to the 7 county metropolitan area, Lakeville ranks 5th in overall proficiency and experienced the 8th largest performance gain. Compared to the top 10 MN districts by size, Lakeville ranks FIRST in both math and reading proficiency!  Congratulations to our staff and students for another great year!

I look forward to working with all of you on our continuous improvement efforts this year. Please don't hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.

Research & National Stories

Kwok-Sze Wong, executive director of the American School Counselor Association, discusses in this blog post the way teachers are treated in the media and by the general public. Wong refers to the book "Schools Cannot Do It Alone" by author Jamie Vollmer, who offers suggestions for improving the public perception of teachers. Among his recommendations are for teachers to stop criticizing one another, focus on the positive and share something good about education on a social network.

Fall 2012
From the Superintendent.....

New Communication Protocol for ISD 194 Staff Unveiled!

I meet monthly with a district-wide team called the Collaborative Systems Improvement Team (CSI) formerly, the Shared Leadership Team. The membership represents every building and work group across our district. Last year the team used the PLAN-DO-STUDY-ACT problem solving process to tackle the issue of low staff morale.

We studied the many possible reasons for morale issues and determined that a lack of consistent information contributed to this problem. We created an improvement theory and followed that up with an action plan. In order to implement the plan, I will be working with the leadership team to share the expectations established for all providers of information in our district.

Staff will have to do their part as well. The employee expectations below are essential in order for communication to improve in our district.

Improvement Theory: If we make communication a priority, define what it looks like in our district, and make those processes non-negotiable, then we will have a better shared vision and more informed and engaged staff members which will contribute to higher levels of morale.

Expectations for Internal Communication (District & Providers)

  • Email access for all employees
  • Template for all committee reports
  • District-level information goes to all staff at the same time
  • Time in day for information updates (scheduled)
  • Information from meetings provided to those who cannot attend
  • Provide training to all staff to be successful. Differentiated training to meet needs, for example, folders by employee group in Employee Alerts.
  • Regular refreshers on expectations for users
  • Supply a list of contacts for internal information and an FAQ (online training modules)
  • Hard copies of important information in lounges and key areas
  • Copies provided to DO - Use school messenger for important messages to staff

Norms for Employees (users) - (Expectations)

  • Check email once a day*
  • Respond to inquiries within 24-48 hours
  • Read all newsletters
  • Read building level news from principal
  • Check employee alerts daily
  • Attend training for email/information access
  • Seek out training/information you need

*Food Service, Custodians/Maintenance will all have email.  Department heads will provide hard copy information since some employees may not have time to access email during working hours.

EML Workload Committee Shares Recommendations

Don Sinner & Lisa Snyder

Representatives of EML and district administration met throughout the spring to examine current workload conditions in our district. Their work included studying the budget of the district both with and without a successful levy and gathering information from teaching staff through surveys to determine the critical issues that need to be addressed.

Their work culminated in May (and reviewed in August) with the following five recommendations:

  • Create a single-site based shared decision making committee in each school, for greater acceptance of decisions and goals and increased teacher satisfaction.
  • Clearly examine and improve prep time and schedules to better meet the needs of our teachers and students.
  • Explore alternative models of delivering instruction.
  • Create a calendar aligned to the needs in the district.
  • Clearly define the "loose and tight" expectations of the district to increase consistency.

The first and last recommendations will be furthered through discussion and planning at principals' meetings this year and reviewed by the EML Workload Committee before implementation. The following two bullets will be incorporated in the district's strategic planning process.

  • Solution-driven collaborative work groups will be formed to research best practices and forward new ideas for the stakeholders to consider.
  • These ideas may be different approaches to instructional delivery, different structures to the school day or improved schedules.

The calendar committee will incorporate this recommendation into the development of the 2013-14 calendar.

We will continue to update staff members as this work progresses.

Academic Achievement

Congratulations to our five Title I elementary schools who have achieved the top two levels of MDE's award designations for Title I schools!  Lake Marion and Orchard Lake Elementary schools received the top designation as "Reward Schools."  These schools were in the top 15% of all Title-I schools in the state of Minnesota.  Further, JFK, OHE and CHE received "Celebration Eligible" status.  These schools were in the next 10% of high achieving Title-I schools.  These schools will be able to apply to MDE for "Celebration" status in the coming months. TEACHING AND LEARNING DEPARTMENT

by Barb Knudsen

Welcome Back!  What fun it was to visit with so many of you on the first day of school! Your enthusiasm for the year is so contagious! Thank you!

The Teaching and Learning Department is here to serve the students of the district by providing you with what you need to be successful. Just as buildings and departments created their vision and mission last year, we did the same.

Vision:  Success for all! Whatever it takes!

Mission: Provide leadership, resources, and support in teaching and learning throughout the district.

 Learning: our primary purpose!

Restructuring

During the restructuring last year, our concern was to create a system that would provide seamless service for the staff.  Curriculum, assessment, educational equity, digital learning, and DSCIT (District Service Center: Information Technology) will no longer operate as individual departments, but rather as a collaborative team under the umbrella of Teaching and Learning to more efficiently and effectively serve our staff across the district.

Click here to view the team members that make up the 2012-13 Teaching and Learning Department.

In addition, the Learning Specialists and Deans stepped forward to assist in the department's mission to provide leadership, resources, and support in teaching and learning throughout the district at each campus.  We will provide more information at later meetings.

Department Changes

During the last month, we had two changes:

  • Stacy Wells accepted the Educational Equity position in ISD 196: Rosemount-Apple Valley- Eagan.
  • Sandy Hinding (DSCIT) just accepted the position of OSX/iOS and Casper System Administrator for ISD 197: West St. Paul-Mendota Heights-Eagan. Her last day is September 14th.

Our department will definitely miss their incredible expertise and service!  We are so sad to see them go while we are also very excited for their new opportunities!  We wish them both well!!

During the summer, we hired two positions from within the district to support our teachers as trainers and coaches in the area of intervention.

  • Sandy Giorgi moved from Gifted Specialist at LME and OLE to Elementary RTI Specialist serving all staff K-3.  She will work with classroom teachers to maximize strategies to develop a workable system for interventions.  Her position is the direct result of ISD 194 Local Literacy Plan for elementary. Funding for Early Intervention through Special Education supports her position. Thanks to Renae Ouillette for supporting this project!
Penny Judson moved from her position as EPIC teacher at MMS to High School Literacy Intervention Specialist serving both high schools. She will work directly with students, work with teachers offering additional instruction and time for students during the day, and provide professional development on reading and writing across the curriculum. Literacy aid supports this position.

Professional Learning Communities

In response to the district Teaching and Learning Advisory Council, Wednesdays are dedicated to Professional Learning Communities work. No other district or building meetings may occur during that time. Thanks to the TLC for setting the expectations!

Each campus will have each teacher in a Professional Learning Community with grade-level/course-alike/job-alike colleagues. To assist with this process, the Teaching and Learning Teams will travel throughout the district in pairs visiting each building a minimum of three times during first semester.  Our goal is to assist your PLC, visit classrooms to see the great experiences you are providing students, and respond to your questions.  We are very excited to reserve Wednesdays for this. The schedule will come out Monday, September 10th.  As always, feel free to contact us anytime if you have any questions-not just Wednesdays!

Teaching & Learning Progression

The teaching & Learning Progression was created as a structure to reflect the work the staff do to improve student achievement. Please click here to read more about the T&L Progression

Teaching & Learning Corner: Formative Assessment

by Emily McDonald

Formative assessment (or assessment for learning) can be a powerful tool to ensure that students are learning new material.  In Marzano's (2004) book Classroom Instruction That Works, he found that the formative assessment process resulted in some of the greatest gains for students.  This process included common classroom practices such as, sharing learning targets in student-friendly language; providing frequent, high quality feedback; assessing formatively and adjusting teaching in response to the learning.  Hattie's (2009) meta-analysis of effective practices also identified formative assessment as highly impactful for learning.  For teachers, checking for understanding throughout the learning process helps guide and plan future instruction, as well as reduces the time required for intensive re-teaching.  Students benefit from the feedback about their own learning, the identification of areas in which they struggle and the focus on improvement. For more information of formative assessments, check out the following books:

  • Visible Learning for Teachers (J. Hattie, 2012).
  • Embedded Formative Assessment (D. Williams, 2011)
  • Formative Assessment & Standards-Based Grading (R. Marzano, 2009)

If you are looking for additional information or resources on formative assessments, please let us know. -Emily McDonald, PK12 Teaching & Learning Coordinator: emily.mcdonald@isd194.org, 612.642.1460

Curriculum Updates

Going Google Update:

  Google Apps

Google Apps for Education is off to a great start at the Lakeville Area Public Schools as many buildings have completed their staff training. Many around the district are using the great features that Google
Apps for Education has to offer.

Students across the district also have access to Google Apps for Education. Please contact your building technology leader on how to obtain the information about your student's accounts. Having students use their accounts on a daily basis is a great way to communicate and collaborate in and out of the classroom. A reminder to all staff that your email address has changed to the following address:

firstname.lastname@isd194.org

For additional information and support about Google Apps for Education at ISD194, click here, or contact Darin Marcussen.

High Quality Workforce

The Human Resources department spent a good part of the summer preparing staffing for new school year, including processing the hiring (or recall) of 26 teachers and 15 non-licensed support staff.  In addition, a new principal was hired for Century Middle School (see profile of Chris Endicott).  We are very pleased with the quality of employees joining our district this year.

Negotiations were completed with LASA (representing principals and deans).  Mediation sessions are scheduled with LEAF negotiators on September 6, and with SEIU negotiators (representing custodians and maintenance employees) on September 20.

The District is piloting a Principal Performance Evaluation system with the Minnesota Department of Education this year and beginning work with EML representatives on a revised Teacher Performance Evaluation system to be implemented in the 2014-15 school year.

Special Education & Student Services

Renae Ouillette and Sharon Krueger

Welcome to back everyone! The newly formed Special Education and Student Services department has been busy this summer getting things ready for the start of the school year. In addition to English as a Second Language and special education, our department now includes open-enrollment, health and mental health services, homeschooling, homebound instruction, services for homeless families, and care and treatment. As a result of the additions, a new administrative assistant has been added to our team. We are pleased that Mary Moody, who was previously a member of Student Information Service, joined us as the Student Services Administrative Assistant on August 13th. It is great to have such a high quality individual willing to take on some new challenges. My goal is to move our systems for gathering and reporting student services information to electronic formats for ease of use by parents and staff members. If you have questions regarding open-enrollment, home schooled students, homelessness, homebound services or students in care and treatment, you can reach Mary Moody via email or at extension 2025.   You can also access information and forms via our district website.

This summer over 80 of our special education licensed staff members attended a two-day summer institute to advance their professional development. Topics included writing standards-based IEPs, working with children with autism spectrum disorders, using AimsWeb progress monitoring, and using Infinite Campus. We had a great group of speakers! Thank you to Ann Sperl, Julie Johnson, Polly Johnson, Sarah Hutter, Kelly Carlson, and Karin Kuhn for all of their help and expertise.

As of the publication of this newsletter all open licensed positions have been filled! Thank you to everyone who participated in interviews and to staff members who agreed to take on additional FTE to accommodate our students' needs. We are extremely impressed with the quality of our new employees. We believe that we have selected individuals with great passion and enthusiasm for special education.

Please plan to join us on October 4, 2012 for the grand opening of the new Crystal Lake Education Center from 5:30-8:00pm. There will be fun activities for kids (including a performance by the Splatter Sisters, face painting and games) as well as facility tours. It has been a labor of love for many of us to bring Crystal Lake back to life. I especially hope many of you who taught and worked in the building will come and celebrate with us.

Digital Learning Update

iLearn 194 -

Our iLearn 194 grantees are ready to implement iPads into classroom learning for the entire school year! Many grantees participated in iPad training opportunities this summer and/or spent time discovering apps that can be used in their classrooms. In addition, we are excited to share that over 25 non-iLearn staff members checked out iPads over the summer to increase their own learning and understanding of iPads. This school year, some of the iPads being used in a 1:1 setting will be going home with students. We will continue to gather data on student achievement, motivation and engagement to measure the impact of this technology on our practice.

iClass - Six hybrid classes started this fall at LSHS and LNHS. A hybrid course is a blend of the best components of face-to-face instruction with meaningful online instruction. The Hybrid teachers are using Schoology to deliver online content. These "pioneer" staff members trained over the summer and are leading our online journey.

Administrator Training - Several district administrators participated in iPad training in August with a certified Apple trainer. They explored the role of leadership in digital learning, created multi-media presentations, and investigated apps for organization and learning.

Thanks to the presenters at the Superintendent's welcome!

Thanks for sharing your digital learning stories with the staff.
