Named after William Shakespeare's tragic lovers, the origins of Romeo y Julieta as a Habano date back to 1875.
The brand rose to international fame during the early years of the 20th Century under the direction of Don "Pepin" Fernandez, a talented promoter, who was amongst the first to recognise the power of the cigar band. During his hey day no less than 20,000 different bands were used in production.
Winston Churchill became a devotee of Romeo y Julieta. Since his visit to Havana in 1946, his name has not only been commemorated on a band but it has also served to describe the marque's most famous size measuring 7 inches (178 mm) by 47 ring gauge - the Churchill.
Romeo y Julieta's balanced and aromatic blend of selected leaves from the Vuelta Abajo region make it the classic medium bodied Habano.

Cuban Cigar
Reviews
Romeo y Julieta Churchill
7 x 47 Churchill
reviewed by D Fraser
The infamous Churchill size from Cuba has gone through transitions over the years. In the days of old, this size was reliable and sought after. Then in the mid to late 2000s churchills from Cuba were problematic due to draw issues and inconsistent flavors.
The Cuban Churchill is back! The Romeo Churchill, named after old Sir Winston is the star of this size, though many other Cuban brands make a churchill size as well, the most notable being the Cohiba Espendido.
The Romeo Churchill had a nice light 2/6 wrapper and smelled a little of cedar and uncooked oats. Upon first light I found the normal pepper tone of Romeo cigars, but it quickly changed to more coffee and cream, sort of a latte overtone. Mild side cigar, about a 4/10 strength, increasing to a 5 near the end.
I loved the draw, which normally is not mentioned in a review, but since the Churchill size has a bad history, I thought I should mention it here. Nice woody finish, more fresh wood than forest or campfire to me.
My overall rating for this cigar is 90/100
CA Magazine's most recent rating was a 91/100 in Sep 2011

Cuban Cigar Review
Cuaba Exclusivo
5 3/4 x 46 gorda
reviewed by Cameron M
Cuaba - I am a big fan of this boutique brand from Cuba.
I usually smoke the Distinguidos, however, this time I thought I would try the somewhat smaller Exclusivo.
The Exclusivo I smoked had a medium wrapper on the darker side close to a 4/6. I had this cigar with a 12 year old single malt Auchentoshan.
When first lit this smaller cigar had notes of a light oil with a hint of hazelnut. There were faint notes of cedar with a mild pepper undertone.
Overall my expectations for this cigar were not met. I still favor the Distinguido as more consistent and reliable though it could have been a one off experience.
My rating for this cigar is 86/100
CA Magazine's most recent rating was a 86/100 in Aug 2011

Your Chuckle for today
Tiger Woods and Stevie Wonder are in a bar. Tiger turns to Stevie and says "How's the singing career going?" Stevie replies "Not too bad. How's the golf?" Woods replies "Not too bad. I've had some problems with my swing but I think I've got that right now".
Stevie "I always find that when my swing goes wrong, I need to stop playing for a while and not think about it. Then, the next time I play, it seems to be all right".
Incredulous, Tiger says "You play GOLF?" Stevie "Yes, I've been playing for years". Tiger "But... you're blind! How can you play golf if you can't see?"
Stevie "Well, I get my caddy to stand in the middle of the fairway and call to me. I listen for the sound of his voice and play the ball towards him. Then, when I get to where the ball lands, the caddy moves to the green or farther down the fairway and again I play the ball towards his voice".
"But, how do you putt" asks Tiger. "Well" says Stevie, "I get my caddy to lean down in front of the hole and call to me with his head on the ground and I just play the ball towards his voice".
Tiger "What's your handicap?" Stevie "Well, actually... I'm a scratch golfer". Woods says to Stevie, "We've got to play a round sometime!" Stevie "Well, people don't take me seriously, so I only play for money, and never play for less than $10,000 a hole. Is that a problem?"
Woods thinks about it and says, "I can afford that... okay I'm in! $10,000 a hole is fine with me. When would you like to play?"
Stevie "Pick a night...any night! |
