Greetings!
The dog days of summer? I guess they are upon us. Great time to have a few Cuban cigars out back while watching the kids cut the grass.
DOG DAYS OF SUMMER... "Dog Days" are the hottest, most sultry days of summer. In the Northern Hemisphere, the dog days of summer are most commonly experienced in the months of July and August, which typically observe the warmest summer temperatures. The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, also called the Dog Star, in close proximity to the sun was responsible for the hot weather.
Hope you are all having a great summer!
We are always glad to be of service

Why do Cuban brands change in depth of flavor over different years?
Cuban cigars are derived from a long history of tobacco agriculture on the island. What tobacco is available at any stage of cigar prodcution plays a large role in the cigars flavors and even strength.
Seedlings are developed first and then planted in the fields with great care. These fields are often left fallow (empty) for a growing season to "rest" and let the soil build back its natural nutrients and optimum conditions. This makes for the very best crops and the finest of tobacco leaves.
Hurricanes play a part in what tobacco is available for cigar production. Often the seedlings are fine, being small and low they resist the impact of such weather that luckily occurs early in the planting process. A hurricane can, however, greatly impact the buildings used to cure and later ferment & dry the tobacco leaves.
This can lead to a shortage of wrapper leaves for certain cigars brands, forcing them to use alternates not normally found on a particular brand.
The filler leaves, making up the majority of the flavor, must sometimes be changed to leaves from a different region due to adverse weather damages.
There are other times when for whatever reason, the crop is just more flavorful and rich. The result can be a line such as Bolivar seems to increase in popularity due to it "smoking very well" for a period of a few years.
This is actually the case with Bolivar this year of 2012. The brand went through a low period for a while after winning CA Magazines No 1 cigar of the year, but seems to be "back" so to speak and smoking amazingly well right now.
The Montecristo No 2 torpedo is another that is smoking fantastic right now. While this cigar has ups and downs over the years, it is a great smoke even in a down year. Right now, a very fine example of what Cuban cigars are all about.

Cuban Cigar
Reviews
Por Larranga
Petit Corona
5 1/8 x 42 petit corona
reviewed by D Fraser
Por Larrange is a lesser known brand from Cuba that most would not select, but they would miss out on a unique stogie experience.
Wrapper was a light 2/6 and strength was a 2 1/2 of 10. Very well suited to a breakfast time cigar.
A very light side cigar, the flavors hint of vanilla, notes of fresh soft wood, with some soft tobacco tones. The aroma was reminiscent of tree bark to me.
My overall rating for this cigar is 88/100
CA Magazine's most recent rating was a 91/100 in Dec 2011

El Rey del Mundo Choix Supreme
5 x 48 robusto
reviewed by Cameron M
This robusto lives up to its name and can hold its own against any other cigar.
I recently smoked this cigar outside on a warm summer night while enjoying a 15 year old single malt Glenlivet. This cigar wrapper was on the lighter side I would say 2/6.
This is a medium body cigar that always has an effortless draw and shouldn't be missed. The entire cigar had notes of hazelnut and a dried cedar undertone.
I tasted brown buttered toast in the last third.
My overall rating for this cigar is 91/100
CA Magazine last reviewed this cigar as a 92/100 Aug 2011

Cuban Cigar Review
Hoyo de Monterrey
Epicure Especial
51/2 x 50 robusto extra
reviewed by Cameron M
I smoked this cigar while enjoying a coffee after lunch and basking in the warmth of a beautiful sunny day.
I paired this cigar with a Costa Rican coffee which turned out to be a great combination.
The cigar I smoked came with a lighter wrapper a 2/6.
As soon as I lit this robusto extra, I had overwhelming flavors of rich dark earth tempered with a pepperiness and notes of faint spice.
This cigar was consistent throughout the flavor was consistent and the draw was effortless.
My overall rating for this cigar is 92/100
CA Magazine's most recent rating was a 91/100 in Aug 2010

Your Chuckle for today
LANGUAGE BARRIER? A Russian woman married a Canadian gentleman and they lived happily ever after in Toronto. The poor lady was not very proficient in English, but did manage to communicate with her husband. The real problem arose whenever she had to shop for groceries.
One day, she went to the butcher and wanted to buy chicken legs. She didn't know how to put forward her request, so, in desperation, clucked like a chicken and lifted up her skirt to show her thighs. Her butcher got the message and gave her the chicken legs. Next day she needed to get chicken breasts. Again she didn't know how to say it, so she clucked like a chicken and unbuttoned her blouse to show the butcher her breasts. The butcher understood again and gave her some chicken breasts. On the 3rd day, the poor lady needed to buy sausages. Unable to find a way to communicate this, she brought her husband to the store. Why do you think she brought her husband to the store? Her husband speaks English!
Seems your mind may just be in the gutter today, ha... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SALES IS AN ART!
John was a clerk in a small drugstore but he was not much of a salesman. He could never find the item the customer wanted.
The drugstore owner had had about enough and warned John that the next sale he missed would be his last. Just then a man came in coughing and asked John for their best cough syrup. Try as he might, John could not find the cough syrup. Remembering the owner's warning, John sold the man a box of Laxettes and instructed him to take the entire box all at once.
The customer immediately consumed the entire box in the store and then walked outside and leaned against a lamppost.
The drugstore owner had seen the whole thing and came over to ask John what had transpired. "He wanted something for his cough but I couldn't find the cough syrup. I substituted Laxettes and told him to take it all at once".
"Laxettes won't cure a cough!" the owner shouted angrily.
"Sure it will" John said, pointing at the man leaning on the lamp post. "Look at him. He's too afraid to cough".
