  A Cuban Cigar Discussion

DOUBLE CORONAS FROM CUBA

Have you enjoyed a Double Corona size cigar from Cuba?

If you have not yet had one, you are in for a real treat. Double Corona size is a difficult cigar to roll and only the very most experienced rollers are allowed to make them in Cuba. In fact, many cigar manufacturers avoid the double corona for that very difficulty. When made properly, the rewards are exquisite indeed.

You can take your pick from the variety of Double Corona's Cuba manufactures.

Each is a 7 5/8" length x 49 ring

Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona
Partagas Lusitania
Saint Luis Rey Double Corona
Ramon Allones Gigante
San Cristobal el Morro
Vegas Robaina Don Alejandro

The experiences are all different of course, but the common features are the cool smoke, easy draw and subtle flavors.  Even the strong side Partagas comes across fairly mild in the first half due to the length of a double corona.  The flavors have a chance to build and develop slowly as you smoke.  Time must not be a  factor, as this size is meant for a relaxing cigar session, not a quick puff by any means.  You will find it worth it, especially on a summer evening, after a nice dinner followed by coffee and an aperitif.

As the sun sets you are rewarded with stronger flavors, more intense subtle tones than in the first half. The finish of this cigar is where the finest flavors are found, so you will want to remove the band as it nears the end.  Enjoy!

History of a Cuban cigar brand

Juan Lopez Cuban Cigars

A Spanish businessman named Juan Lopez Diaz founded his brand in the 1870's.

Although little known around the world today, Juan Lopez has always attracted a following amongst aficionados of Habanos.

Some refer to the line as the little brother of Montecristo, since the flavors are often similar.  Dry tea, cocoa, subtle leather notes and a slight spice in the finish.

The range offers a consistent flavour based on a rich blend of leaves form the Vuelta Abajo region and all the sizes are "totalmente a mano, tripa larga" - totally hand made long filler.

Cuban Cigar

Reviews

Romeo y Julieta WIDE CHURCHILL

5 1/8" x 55

wide robusto

reviewed by Cam M

Romeo y Julieta wide Churchill

This is a recent addition to the Cuban Romeo y Julieta family.

I usually smoke the short Churchill  which is a standard robusto, but thought I would step up to the wide Churchill and I am glad I did.

What a treat smoking this cigar. It has an impressive ring gauge of 55 but don't let that scare you away. It does not seem like a massive ring gauge, rather sort of like a robusto with much more smoke and flavor.

I smoked this cigar outdoors (nice sunny day) and enjoyed a glass of spring water while I savored the Romeo churchill line flavors and sensations. I say that since the churchill vitolas from Romeo are different that the normal peppery tones of the rest of the Romeo line from Cuba.

I found the Wide Churchill to be medium to strong and exceptionally smooth. Flavors were in the coffee range for me.  I tasted roasted coffee bean and also had a sensation of semi sweet chocolate.

I choose my cigar with a medium shade wrapper 3/6.

My overall rating for this cigar is 92/100

CA Magazine last reviewed this cigar as a 92/100 Nov 2011

Cuban Cigar Review

Montecristo No 2

6 1/8 x 52 torpedo

reviewed by Cameron M

cuban montecristo no 2 torpedo Monte Cristo #2 - This is a true Cuban classic that has stood the test of time.

The Cuban Montecristo No 2 torpedo has been a consistent best seller for years for Cuban cigar makers and it shows every time you smoke this cigar.

I choose this particular cigar because it had a darker oily wrapper at 4/6.

My cocktail of choice was a  Belvedere vodka martini with 2 olives.

As soon as I lit this cigar I had strong favours of dark chocolate with a hint of cinnamon and dried tea. About a third into my cigar I had notes of cedar and wet leather.

This is a very enjoyable cigar my overall rating is 93/100. This cigar is a must have in any humidor and sets the standard for quality Cuban cigars.

CA Magazine's most recent rating was a 92/100 in Nov 2011

Just joking...
Your Chuckle for today

A father, son and grandson went to the country club for their weekly round of golf.

Just as they reached the first tee, a beautiful young blonde woman carrying her bag of clubs approached them.

She explained that the member who brought her to the club for a round of golf had an emergency that called him away and asked the trio whether she could join them.

Naturally, the guys all agreed.

Smiling, the blonde thanked them and said, "Look, fellows, I work in a topless bar as a dancer, so nothing shocks me anymore.

If any of you want to smoke some Cuban cigars, have a beer or two, bet, swear, tell off-color stories or do anything that you normally do when playing a round together, go ahead. But, I enjoy playing golf, consider myself pretty good at it, so don't try to coach me on how to play my shots."

With that the guys agreed to relax and invited her to drive first.

All eyes were fastened on her shapely behind as she bent to place her ball on the tee. She then took her driver and hit the ball 270 yards down the middle, right in front of the green.

The father's mouth was agape. "That was beautiful," he said. "well struck"

The blonde put her driver away and said, "I really didn't get into it, and I faded it a little."

After the three guys hit their drives and their second shots, the blonde took out an eight iron and lofted the ball within five feet of the hole. (She was closest to the pin.)

The son said, "Damn, lady, you played that perfectly."

The blonde frowned and said, "It was a little weak, but even an easy seven would have been too much club. I've left a tricky little putt." She then tapped in the five-footer for a birdie.

Having the honors, she drove first on the second hole, knocked the heck out of the ball, and it landed nearly 300 yards away smack in the middle of the fairway.

For the rest of the round the statuesque blonde continued to amaze the guys, quietly and methodically shooting for par or less on every hole.

When they arrived at the 18th green, the blonde was three under par, and had a very nasty 12-foot putt on an undulating green for a par.

She turned to the three guys and said, "I really want to thank you all for not acting like a bunch of chauvinists and telling me what club to use or how to play a shot, but I need this putt for a 69 and I'd really like to break 70 on this course.

If any one of you can tell me how to make par on this hole I'll take him back to my apartment, pour some 18-year-old Single Malt Scotch in him, give him a fine Montecristo No 2 Cuban cigar to smoke, fix him a steak dinner and then show him a very good time the rest of the night."

The yuppie son jumped at the thought! He strolled across the green, carefully eyeing the line of the putt and finally said, "Honey, aim about 6 inches to the right of the hole and hit it firm. It will get over that little hump and break right into the cup."

The father knelt down and sighted the putt using his putter as a plumb. "Don't listen to the kid, darlin', you want to hit it softly 10 inches to the right and let it run left down that little hogback, so it falls into the cup."

The sly old gray-haired grandfather looked at the lovely blonde woman and did not say a word.  He walked over to the blonde's ball, picked it up and handed it to her and said softly,...

"That's a gimme, sweetheart."

The blonde smiled and said, "Your car or mine?"
