The PGA golf event of the year.  The quest for the green jacket motivates pro golfers to reach for greatness.

Possibly the finest golf course in the world. Augusta National Golf Club opened in December of 1932, although the formal grand opening didn't take place until January of 1933. Land for the club had been purchased and construction begun in 1931.

HISTORY of the MASTERS
Looking to provide a service to golf by hosting a tournament, Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts decided to hold an annual event beginning in 1934. The final decision was made at a meeting in New York at the office of member W. Alton Jones. Roberts proposed the event be called the Masters Tournament, but Bobby Jones objected thinking it too presumptuous. The name Augusta National Invitation Tournament was adopted and the title was used for five years until 1939 when Jones relented and the name was officially changed. An early decision was whether Jones would play or serve as an official. Jones preferred not to compete but was persuaded by the Club's members to join the field. In the 12 Tournaments that Jones played, his best finish was 13th in 1934.
Many decisions made in the early days of the Tournament remain today. Among these are the four-day stroke playing of 18 holes each day instead of the then customary 36 holes on the third day, eliminating qualifying rounds, and denying permission for anyone except the player and caddie to be in the playing area. A complimentary pairing sheet and a spectator booklet were provided, and commercialization in any form of the Tournament was limited.

The first Tournament was held March 22, 1934, and beginning in 1940, the Masters was scheduled each year during the first full week in April. That first Tournament was won by Horton Smith, and in the Fall of 1934 the nines were reversed. In 1935 Gene Sarazen hit "the shot heard 'round the world" scoring a double eagle on the par 5 15th hole, tying Craig Wood and forcing a playoff. Sarazen won the 36-hole playoff the following day by five strokes. In 1942 Byron Nelson defeated Ben Hogan 69-70 in an 18-hole playoff and the Tournament was not played the following three years, 1943, 1944 and 1945, during the war. To assist the war effort, cattle and turkeys were raised on the Augusta National grounds.

The 1950's included two victories by Ben Hogan, and the first of four for Arnold Palmer. Palmer's 1958 win began the tradition of Amen Corner. In 1960 the Par 3 Contest was begun, and in 1965-1966 Jack Nicklaus became the first Masters champion to defend his title successfully. During the decade of the 1970's the two founders of the Masters Tournament passed away. Both Jones and Roberts left indelible impressions on the Masters and on the world of golf. The following decade Spaniard Seve Ballesteros won twice and Tom Watson captured his second title. In 1986 at age 46, Nicklaus donned his sixth Green Jacket. And in 1997, Tiger Woods broke the Tournament four-day scoring record that had stood for 32 years. At the 2001 Masters, Woods won his fourth consecutive professional major, and in 2002 became only the third player to win consecutive Masters titles. In 2005 he became the third person to win at least four Tournaments.

Masters Trivia
The best final round score by a winner
was 64 by Gary Player in 1978.

Tournament or "Series" badges
have been sold out since 1966.

COMEBACK
In 1996, Nick Faldo started the final round six strokes behind leader Greg Norman, but won the Tournament by five.

Does the winner get to keep the
Masters Champion Green Jacket?
The Masters champion gets to take the Green Jacket home with him and keep it for a year. When he returns to Augusta National the following year, he returns the jacket to the club. From that point on, the champion has "visitation rights" to his Green Jacket. The jacket is considered his, and when he visits Augusta National at any point thereafter, he can retrieve and wear his jacket.

 Cuban
San Cristobal de La Habana

San Cristbal de la Habana was the original name of Havana, Cuba's capital city, when it was founded in 1519; San Cristbal (St Christopher) in honour of Columbus and La
abana after an Indian name for the site.

San Cristbal de la Habana cigars were introduced in 1999 as a tribute to the city's long history on the threshold of the new Millennium.

Its range is composed of four vitolas with a light to medium flavour using tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region. Each is named after one of the fortresses that defended the city in the days when it was the hub of Spain's Latin American Empire.

All are "totalmente a mano, tripa larga"-totally hand made, long filler and two sizes, El Morro and La Fuerza, are not found in any other Habano brand.

Flavour Ranking: Light to Medium.

Further Information

about this fine Cuban Cigar

San Cristobal is a very unique line for Cuba.  A subtle sweetness is found in the flavor, along with some light almond notes and a fermented undertone, reminiscent of honey mead. A wonderful afternoon cigar brand that pairs well with dry white wines, sherry and even a cold lager, or better yet, a honey ale.

Cuban Cigar Review

Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill 4 7/8 x 50

reviewed by D Fraser

A nice coffee and cream wrapper, about a 4 of 6 with a distinct cocoa aroma to it.

I  enjoyed this as an after dinner cigar, though it seem to me it would do very well as an afternoon smoke as well.

The double band presentation is elegant and suggests you will savor the cigars flavors.  It did not dissapoint at all.

Different than the majority of Romeo cigars, this blend is more akin to the Romeo full size churchill.

Strong notes of light coffee were accompanied by a mixture of fresh cut woods, a light citrus hint and a mild musky tone, not quite pepper but maybe dried hardwood.

I consider this a medium strength cigar with a strength of 5 of 10.

My overall rating is 91/100.

I had this cigar after a light seafood dinner and found it stood up well.  We had a smokey white wine with dinner, so I finished the wine with my cigar and found it paired quite well.  A coffee may have helped out a bit, but overall a great experience.

CA Magazines most recent rating was also a 93/100 June 2011

Cuban Cigar Review

H Upmann No 2

torpedo 6 1/8  x 52

reviewed by Graham S

It is always a pleasure to get a nice surprise from a cigar and the proof of my ever changing palate.

I was a little apprehensive about lighting the Upmann No 2 as I didn't have any remarkable recollections of the cigar from past attempts.

I was in for a pleasant surprise. I was hit with cedar and tobacco flavours and something I couldn't put my finger on.

A little longer and it became evident. I had tried this milk chocolate about a month ago that was infused with the essence of chili's in the chocolate. This was what I was getting on the cigar.

A slight papyrus note also showed but was subtle and understated. The cedar subsided in the second third giving way to the tobacco and spicey milk chocolate sensations with a faint hint of leather which remained to the end.

This was a very fine late afternoon cigar paired with Woodford Reserve Bourbon which complimented the smoke nicely. I am confident in giving the H. Upmann No 2 a very conservative 90 points.

CA Magazines most recent rating was 92/100 Oct 2011
