 Cuban Fonseca cigars

Don Francisco Fonseca founded his brand in the 1890s.

A handsome man, who cared deeply for appearances, he passed his artorial precision on to his cigars, which he dressed in silky tissue paper - a tradition that continues to this day on the four Habanos sizes that bear his name.

Fonseca's light blend of tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region makes it the ideal cigar to follow a light meal.

All sizes of Fonseca are "totalmente a mano" - totally hand made with three being "tripa larga'"or long filler and one 'tripa corta' or short filler (the Delicias).

Left to right, Fonseca No 1, Fonseca Cosacos, Fonseca Delicias, and Fonseca KDT Cadete.  All are hand made and long filler, except the Delicias which is a short filler.

Further Information

about this fine Cuban Cigar

When Fonseca created his brand a large reason was the French market.  The French in those times felt it improper to touch their food, instead using silken tissues.  Since a cigar was for consumption, it qualified for this special treatment.  The result was the silken tissue wrapper on each Fonseca cigar.

A light bodied Cuban cigar, offering subtle spice notes with some cedar tones and very often strong leather qualities.  Others find some dry citrus peel hints and even some floral in the finish.  Flavor is very defined and those that enjoy this brand, really love it.  It is considered a mild side cigar, though I find the smaller ones can reach a 5 1/2 of ten strength level.

The PHONE CALL!

I swear to you this really happened.

I received an urgent phone call once from an obviously distraught and bewildered client, who called after lighting a Cuban Fonseca I had sent him as part of a mixed box selection.  He was calling to complain about the over abundance of smoke and ashes and the acrid taste of the cigar.

I assured him that while Fonseca's flavors can be a love or hate proposition, this was a mild brand that should show little if any acidity or charcoal notes, but rather a simple nice spice tone for most palettes.  Then on the off chance he had one with a very dark maduro wrapper, I asked him to describe the wrapper.

He said, why it's white of course... then for the longest time, I heard only silence...

It seems he had left the silk paper on the cigar when he lit it, resulting in what I can only imagine was flames, huge smoke, and embers everwhere.    A sort of mini roman candle effect I suspect, though I was not cruel enough to actually ask him to describe the experience in detail.

I rather  hastily explained the reason for the silken paper protection put on the outside of each Fonseca Cuban cigar and then followed that (since there was only a deafening silence on the other end of the phone at this point) with as many stories as I had ( no shortage luckily) of the boneheaded things I have done in my life when distracted.

I promised never to repeat his tale,  so I mention no name here, but thought the story worth repeating.  I confess, it is still one of the funniest phone calls I have ever taken about Cuban cigars and I have done this a very long time.

 Cuban Cigar Review

Partagas Serie P No 2

Torpedo   6 1/8 x 52

reviewed by Cameron M.

A well constructed cigar with a medium shade wrapper, the smoke was rich and aromatic.

I had subtle notes of spice cake with a hint of raisin and toasted brown bread.

The last half of the cigar the notes of spice and raisin became stronger.

I enjoyed this as a mid afternon cigar and paired it with a 10 yr old Glenmorangie.

Some may find this a slightly strong side afternoon cigar, I see it as a 6 1/2 of 10 strength.

My overall rating of this cigar is a comfortable 92/100.
