Greetings!

Summer is finally here (except for those warmer temperatures we've been waiting for) and some students will be taking a break from school to enjoy some relaxation. For others, the learning continues throughout the summer, which demonstrates just one of the many options available to Navigate students and families. However you plan to spend it, our staff wishes all Navigate students a restful summer with family and friends! Looking forward to seeing you in September!
Grad Ceremony
Navigate GradOn Friday June 8th, family, friends and teachers gathered for a very touching ceremony to celebrate the achievements of our 2012 Grads.

The Graduation Ceremony took place at the beautiful Kingfisher Resort where many smiles, tears and joyful moments were shared. Diplomas were presented to seven Navigate students. Jake Bey, Chase Higgins, Bryce Lefebvre, Evan Markstrom, Michelle McColl, Lian Paterson, Jennifer Townsend were personally recognized by Jeff Stewart for their hard work and independent learning at Navigate. A wonderful speech was given for each student and awards were presented to Lian Paterson, Bryce Lefebvre and Michelle McColl for their individual achievements. The ceremony was followed by pictures in the Kingfisher gardens, accompanied by tea, coffee and snacks.

It was a day to remember with many reasons to celebrate! Congratulations to all Navigate Grads of 2012 and we wish you all the best in your bright futures!

Long House Visit

Sue Rasmussen and Kevin Corman's grade four classes had the honor of visiting the Comox Band Longhouse, along with numerous other grade four classes in the Comox Valley. They witnessed beautiful customary dancing, singing and drumming. The dancers wore intricate outfits and shared stories of Aboriginal Cultures on the West Coast. At the end of the ceremony the performers invited the audience to join them on the main floor for some traditional dancing. The grade four students enjoyed their visit immensely and it was an inspiring way to experience Aboriginal Culture!

The day was full of action and laughter as students could be found jumping around in the bouncy castles, blowing bubbles, participating in numerous relay races, getting their faces painted, fishing for prizes, creating bead necklaces or just hanging out with their friends. Some of the highlights were the potato sack races, the colorful Navigate Ribbons, the hot dog lunch and Tug of War to finish off the day! What a wonderful way to end the school year!

Parent Testimonial About Navigate
What an empowering feeling to know that there was options for my kids to get an education. There was no need to keep plunking away at something that wasn't working.  There was an escape for all the stress. So our adventure  at NIDES began with my oldest son Justin who has the privilege of being ADHD. Getting him through elementary school had its challenges and I probably spent about as much time at the school as the teachers , volunteering where ever they needed help so that I could be a support to my son.  By the time Justin reached middle school it became very clear that he was not going to be able to keep up his grades and get through these years without having his self esteem take a beating. Ron Bannerman Award
The Ron Bannerman award was given to two Navigate students. These students demonstrated a dedication and passion towards history!Ron Bannerman was a teacher and an administrator in the Comox Valley. He was very passionate about local and Canadian history and enjoyed instilling this passion in young people. His family dedicated this award in his honor after he passed away. The award is given every year to students who demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for Canadian History. Two young ladies from Navigate displayed such passion at the District Heritage Fair; Hannnah and Jessica.
Navigate Student Award Hannah is a grade 7 student who chose 'Homesteading' as her topic for the Heritage Fair. Having family members who were homesteaders many years ago, Hannah had a strong connection to this topic. She spoke passionately at the Heritage Fair and even dressed up as a homesteader as she spoke with the judges. Great work Hannah!Navigate Student Award

Jessica chose 'Canadian Animals in Wartime' as her topic. She was amazed at how much information she was able to gather and how many animals played a large role in war. Jessica's love and connection for animals became very apparent as she presented her project. Well done Jessica!Congratulations to Jessica and Hannah for their passion and enthusiasm towards Canadian History!
Black Light Show in Nanaimo
Navigate Black Light ShowBeban Park was teeming with excitement as Navigate students from the Nanaimo/Parksville area prepared for their Black-Light Show. Guests were greeted at the door with a smile and a box office where tickets were collected. Ushers were available to seat guests in their designated areas and Beban Park was decorated with colorful posters for the show. It was a full house performance!

The Black Light show went wonderfully! Navigate students from K-7 worked collaboratively on the entire performance and based the show on the story 'Stone Soup'. All of the puppets, props, scenery, recordings, tickets and posters were made by the students themselves. An amazing amount of work and dedication was put towards the show. Using bright colored paint for the puppets and black lights, the stage glowed beautifully as the students did an incredible job of moving their characters along the stage.

The Black-Light Show was a perfect way to end the school year! The students did such a fabulous job and the show was enjoyed by all! Adding more excitement to the day was a reporter from the Nanaimo Bulletin! Click here to read the story on the Black-Light Show.
