Black Light Shows at Navigate & Nanaimo
On May 29th parents, friends, teachers, grandparents and many others gathered in the Tsolum gym as a very excited K - 7 student body prepared for their grand black-light performance! The students have been working diligently with local artist and educator Kevin Flesher on creating a fantastic black-light extravaganza! Kevin spent one day a week for the last two months working with each grade level on creating puppets and characters for the multi-aged show. Navigate students, teachers and their dynamic leader Kevin wrote a script based on Portuguese Creek and how the actions of people affect its natural environment.

The show started with Kevin playing the accordion, followed by a warm welcome given by our Navigate students. Soon after, the lights were off and the stage was glowing beautifully under the black-lights. The audience was captivated throughout the entire performance with catchy songs, glowing puppets and an extremely clever storyline. The time, effort, dedication and hard work put in by the students was truly emulated in this wonderful performance! An amazing job by all! Congratulations K-7 Navigate students, teachers and Kevin Flesher! Everyone truly enjoyed the phenomenal show! To watch a video of this performance, please click here

Navigate students from the Nanaimo area have also been working hard with Kevin. They created a black-light show based on the Chinese version of 'Stone Soup', designing their own set and puppets. The students are enthusiastically looking forward to showcasing their performance on June 1st at Beban Park at 1:00pm. It is sure to be a glowing success!

Sailing

Navigate K-7 students had a sensational time sailing on May 18th at Goose Spit Marine Park! Compass Adventure provided an exciting and memorable time on the water. The students were able to try sailing, stand up paddling, kayaking and playing on the water trampoline and slide. The weather was sunny, the beach was muddy and everyone had a wonderful time!

Aboriginal Culture Celebration Day

Navigate hosted its second annual Aboriginal Cultural Day. Students had the opportunity to learn about Aboriginal Culture and meet with three vibrant guests who taught them interesting aspects of Aboriginal tradition.

Barb Whyte demonstrated her diverse knowledge of herbs and medicinal plants. She shared her expertise on what local plants or herbs can alleviate specific ailments in the body. This was very fascinating and insightful for our students and staff.

Corey Frank taught the students the process of barbecuing wild salmon. He demonstrated how to place the salmon on cedar and arrange the structure over a smoky fire. After watching and waiting for the salmon to slowly sizzle over the flame and smoke, the students were able to sample the wonderful fish. It tasted amazing!

The students worked very attentively with Suzanne Camp as she taught them the tradition and history of Button Blankets. She then worked step by step with the students on creating their own Button Blanket dolls, which everyone enthusiastically enjoyed! There were smiles from all of the students as they proudly held up their delicate and beautiful creations! Thank you to our guests for making this day possible and to Jennifer Hibbert for organizing such a special celebration! The students look forward to next year's Aboriginal Culture Celebration Day!

Track and Field

On May 23rd, Navigate students from grades 4 - 7 proudly wore their NIDES jerseys and ventured off to the District Track and Field Jamboree. They participated in a range of different track and field events, as well as took part in fun-filled activities such as tug o'war, stilts and sack races! When Karter first started at Navigate, he had a bit of a rough time at school and it wasn't his favorite place. This year Karter has really flourished and he has participated at Navigate with a willing and positive attitude. He has shown that he is an enthusiastic learner who is thoughtful and caring towards others. It is a pleasure to have Karter as part of our school! Congratulations again on a great school year Karter!
