The Matrix Comes to
School District 71

NIDES Matrix ProgramExciting opportunities will be available this coming year for students in the Comox Valley as School District 71 launches its new program "The Matrix'. The program is described as a "network of intersections and connections between school and life, leading to personal success," and combines three successful learning tools into one personalized learning path for each student: the flexibility of doing online core academic courses with Navigate (powered by NIDES), quality elective options at G.P. Vanier Secondary, and work experience internships within the community. Matrix will be located at the G.P. Vanier campus where The Matrix Lab will be available at Vanier for students who wish to work on Navigate courses online during the day, between the time-table of electives.

The Matrix was created to meet the changing needs of students and parents as they look for education solutions that inspire, educate, and motivate. The flexible scheduling allows students to select their own learning pace and tailor their learning to fit their lifestyle. The electives provide face-to-face social interaction with peers that allow students to build friendships and share ideas. The work experience opportunities help to implement information and provide an important inroad to local job opportunities and employment networks. Transportation to Vanier is available through local public transit throughout the day, making The Matrix a flexible and creative approach to learning for students who are independent self-starters.

Students can also choose to work through the courses independently from home with the help of Navigate teachers. In addition, students can choose from six elective pathways that help to meet graduation requirements or they can customize their own learning plan. These on-site elective options include the subject categories of: Robotics and Engineering, Performing and Visual Arts, Athletics, Digital Technology, Trades & Technology or Culinary Arts. Students can also choose iDesign, which gives them the flexibility to create a customized elective learning path specific to their interests. They can then apply their knowledge and skills in a work place setting through community work experience internships.

Registration will be ongoing from March 28th on a first-come, first-served basis until elective spaces have been filled. Once the program is underway, registration will be available in both September and February semesters. Students can register by calling NIDES at 250.337.5300 or G.P. Vanier at 250.338.9262.

TOTALe Program - A great success!

International students at Navigate are thoroughly enjoying the new Rosetta Stone TOTALe Program. Here are a few comments from our students:

"I am very happy wtih Rosetta Stone TOTALe. I have had two studio sessions already and thoroughly enjoyed them. The tutors keep the discussion at just the right level to be challenging but not overwhelming, and at 50 minutes per session, it's a good workout! I'm looking forward to my next session (and they are easy to arrange!). Also the interactive games are fun and stimulating. I think it is an excellent program."

~ Amanda

"My experience with TOTALe has been nothing but positive. There are stories read by competent Spanish narrators, games to play, either privately or with other students, and, best of all, the Studio sessions with live instructors who are very professional teachers, making the Studio sessions exciting and fun while increasing your ability to communicate verbally in Spanish. ¡Excelente!"
~ Señor Gordon

"Not only does TOTALe have the benefits that other people have described, but it also has an added bonus for those of us with iPads. By downloading the Totale app, the program is fully accessible from the iPad as well as the computer. This gives me a lot more flexibility as to when and where I access units. If I'm travelling all I need is wifi access and I can keep on learning! Also, I have to say that the studio
sessions are an amazing, technology-enabled bargain with TOTALe. The games and stories definitely are helping me to learn Spanish more effectively as well." ~ Beth

A Sparkling Community Orientation Meeting
Fine Arts eCademy

Navigate hosted a successful evening of over 200 parents and students on Tuesday, March 20th. Families joined for an evening of music, art, creativity and information. The students participated in dynamic and engaging activities such as nature art, Djembe drumming circles, the creation of a 'spark' self portrait and online art programs for the creative mind. The entire evening was accompanied by the talented jazz quartet, 'The Jennifer Forsland Group'. Their upbeat tunes kept the evening flowing wonderfully! It was an evening to remember, full of positive energy, meaningful interactions and strong community spirit!

Spring Fever!

According to a SparkNotes blog post, there are some sure signs of Spring Fever. Here are just a few:
  1. You skip everywhere.
  2. You clean your room.
  3. You're wearing only pastel colours.
  4. You eat your lunch from a picnic basket.
  5. You fill your iPod with nature sounds or songs with the word "sun" in them.
  6. Begin each day telling your friends how many days, hours, and minutes are left  until Spring Break.
  7. You're volunteering to help with backyard projects.
  8. You spend your savings on a tent for the backyard.
  9. You're buying fresh flowers to tape onto bare branches.
  10. You're dotting all of your "i"s with smiley faces wearing sunglasses.

Sincerely,
