THANK YOU AND GOOD-BYE TO BARBARA JACKSON

The Canyons would like to thank Barbara Jackson for her time and commitment to The Canyons Athletic Club and the Masters Swim Program.  Barbara has guided this program since its inception in September, 2005.

Barbara is a former Olympic swimmer and holds many national age group records.  Her dedication to the sport of swimming is an inspiration to all of us.

Barbara and her husband are moving to the northern Arizona area this month.  We wish them both the best of luck in their new location and thank her once again for her dedication to our Masters Swim Program.

18 REASONS TO TAKE A NITRIC OXIDE (NO) SUPPLEMENT

L-arginine, an amino acid, is what the body utilizes to produce nitric oxide.  We believe that ProArgi-9+ is the best l-arginine and nitric oxide supplement available, due to the tremendous quality control and manufacturing standards of Nature's Sunshine in Provo, Utah.  The following are some important reasons to take a nitric oxide supplement on a regular basis:
  1. Nitric oxide is 1,000 times more powerful than any other naturally occurring antioxidant in the body.
  2. It offers wide-ranging cardiovascular support, including controlling blood pressure and plaque formation.  Nitric oxide keeps arteries relaxed and pliable for normal blood pressure, preventing hypertension and angina.
  3. It enhances memory, particularly long-term memory, and may help to reverse the effects of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
  4. It will help boost human growth hormone (HGH) production to normal levels, which has anti-aging properties.
  5. It enhances communication of messenger cells between nerves and the brain.
  6. It may help improve immune function and fight bacterial infections.
  7. It may help in the treatment and prevention of diabetes, since many diabetes complications, including poor circulation and blindness, are vascular in nature.  Arginine is also found to regulate insulin secretion in the pancreas.
  8. It may inhibit the division and proliferation of cancer cells.
  9. It may help with cholesterol control by lowering serum and LDL cholesterol levels.
  10. It enhances male sexual performance by treating vascular erectile dysfunction (ED).
  11. Its anticoagulant abilities reduce clotting, to lower heart attach and stroke risk.
  12. It reduces pregnancy-related hypertension, a risk factor for both the expecting mother and the unborn child.
  13. It is useful in the treatment of asthma by opening pulmonary pathways for easier breathing and the treatment of lung disorders.
  14. It relaxes hypertonic sphincter muscles, preventing and healing hemorrhoids.
  15. It boosts lean muscle mass and preserves bone density by encouraging HGH production, which leads to a reduction in fatty tissue.  Because of these properties, it may be useful in weight management and strength training.
  16. It can help offset cardiovascular and lung damage caused by tobacco use, since nitric oxide levels in smokers are less than half of those found in non-smokers.
  17. It helps to accelerate wound healing and post-surgery recovery.  Research has shown it is useful in treating burn wounds, and stimulating wound healing in the elderly.
  18. It may be useful in enhancing athletic performance due to its ability to boost exercise tolerance, its beneficial effects on the lungs, and its effect on HGH levels, which helps build lean muscle tissue.

VITAMIN D: THE SUNSHINE NUTRIENT

Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most widespread health concerns, impacting people of all races and ages. At the same time, some of the very best research being published recently is about the importance of receiving enough Vitamin D. This nutrient is unique in that it can be received directly from the sun. Depending on variables such as where you live and type of skin, it can take up to 30 minutes of unprotected sun exposure twice a week for your body to produce sufficient Vitamin D. While receiving too much unprotected sun exposure can be dangerous, avoiding sunlight altogether is also dangerous without supplementing. Vitamin D is not present in necessary amounts in most common foods, making it difficult to prevent deficiency through diet alone. Fish, though, such as tuna and salmon, contains significant amounts of the sunshine nutrient.

The need for Vitamin D is particularly important for young children and the elderly. As we age, the ability of the skin to manufacture Vitamin D and the kidneys to synthesize it decrease. In addition, many people spend less time outside as they age. This makes it especially important for older people to increase their Vitamin D intake through supplementation.

Facts About Vitamin D:
  • Vitamin D offers protective effects against several types of cancer.
  • Vitamin D promotes bone mineralization and formation.
  • Vitamin D reduces the risk of cardiovascular dysfunction and heart attacks.
  • Vitamin D supports healthy immune system activity and reduces infections.

Benefits of Vitamin D

Osteoporosis:
Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and it is becoming obvious that a deficiency of Vitamin D is a major contributing factor to the development of a brittle, fracture-prone skeletal system.

Cancer: Many studies have documented Vitamin D's protective
effects against colon cancer, oral and esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, leukemia, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer.

Heart Health:
Vitamin D deficiency is known to be associated with an increase in high blood pressure and other cardiovascular risks. In one study it was found that individuals with low levels of Vitamin D had a more than 60% higher risk of heart disease or heart attack than those with normal levels. In another study, teens with lowest levels of Vitamin D had a 400% increase in their risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a major factor in developing cardiovascular disease.

In addition, Vitamin D may help prevent obesity, arthritis, and infections, and may help to maintain cognitive health in elderly individuals.

ZUMBA GOLD

For those of you who would like to try Zumba, but feel intimidated by the pace and cardiovascular level required, The Canyons is now offering Zumba Gold classes.

The original concept of Zumba combines a dance workout with a party-like atmosphere. Zumba Gold takes the popular Latin-dance inspired workout of Zumba and makes it accessible for seniors, beginners or others needing modifications in their exercise routine. Zumba Gold builds cardiovascular health by challenging the heart and working the muscles of the hips, legs and arms with dance moves.

The Canyons is very fortunate to have Kathy DeLong leading the Zumba Gold classes, as she is one of the most experienced Zumba instructors in the valley.
