RENALIFE Magazine Remembers

John Newmann

In the current issue of the American Association of Kidney Patients RENALIFE magazine, Dr. Friedrich Port shares his memories of Dr. John Newmann's venerable spirit and dedication to improving care and outcomes of kidney patients. John Newmann, a renal patient and transplant recipient himself, was a health economist and former member of Arbor Research's board of directors, a key player in shaping Arbor Research. His work with the United States Renal Data System helped bring the patient's perspective to the forefront of medical research.

New Research from the A2ALL on Living Donor Liver Donation Published in the American Journal of Transplantation

A risk assessment of living donor liver donation by Dr. Michael Abecassis et al. "Complications of Living Donor Hepatic Lobectomy - A Comprehensive Report" was published recently in the American Journal of Transplantation. Donation data from the Adult-to-Adult Living Donor Liver Transplantation study for 740 completed liver donations were used to assess complication risk for potential donors, and to evaluate predictors of complications post-donation. Wider application of living donor liver transplantation is limited by complication and morbidity concerns. Previous studies have focused on the development of complications with only one year of follow-up post-donation. The current study by Abecassis et al. included more donors, representing the complete donor experience over a nearly 12-year period to identify predictors associated with post-donation complications.

chart Performance Scores and Facility Reports Posted on DialysisReports.org Website

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Arbor Research, and their partner, University of Michigan-Kidney Epidemiology and Cost Center, released the preview PY 2013 performance score reports (PSR) for the Quality Incentive Program (QIP), 2012 dialysis facility reports (DFR), and dialysis facility compare reports (DFC) on July 15, 2012. The facility level reports include information about facility practice patterns and patient outcomes and are designed to enhance dialysis facility awareness of these practices and outcomes. Local and national averages of comparisons to facility-level patient characteristics, treatment patterns, and outcomes are described in the respective reports. The final DFC reports and DFRs are also provided to state survey agencies and CMS regional offices annually. During this preview period, dialysis facilities can download and view their respective reports and submit questions about their PSRs and DFC reports. Facilities submit questions via the end-stage renal disease help desk and website hosted by Arbor Research at www.dialysisreports.org/. Arbor Research is managing the preview period and reviewing questions received from facilities about their data and their QIP scores. The PY 2013 PSR includes data on two measures used to determine the QIP score. These measures were also included in the PY 2012 QIP (URR>=65% and hemoglobin>12 g/dL). QIP scores will affect payments to dialysis facilities in the 2013 calendar year.
